Sun Feb. 12, 2012

We're getting settled back in at our original destination. We saw good sign today, caught a few wahoo, a few 50-70lbers and we'll see what happens tomorrow.

AA Team

Sat Feb. 11, 2012

Todays highlight was Sailor Jack Esson's 202.5lber, Don Bilteau's 220lber and Matt Bruce's 179lber along with a few other tuna for a total of 24 and 19 wahoo. We are switching gears again.....

AA Team

Tomorrow, Sun 2/12's, Lets Talk Hook Up guests are Capt Brian Kiyohara and he is bringing along vital crewmember and tackle expert, Capt. Taro Takeuchi - check it out!

Fri Feb. 10, 2012

Today was our best day of fishing so we're heading in the right direction - we had 25 tuna, the big fish of the day were Kevin Varnell's 143lber and then Lovey's 140lber. There is good sign, it just requires patience right now and we are piecing this trip together.
Weather just a little rolly polly, but not bad and we're all doing fine. Thanks for checking in.

AA Team

For all of you on land, Capt. Brian Kiyohara is guest on Let's Talk Hook up on Sunday morning - tune in!

Thurs Feb. 9, 2012

Today we had pretty decent weather and great action on wahoo - with 8 tuna for the day, highliner being regular Zeke with a 143lber. We're looking forward to tomorrow..

AA Team

Wed Feb. 8, 2012

Fishing was slower again today with 17 tuna, most of them in the 50-85lb range - standout was 117lb tuna caught by Kevin Cooney..we're going to change our scenery and move on to different pastures. Weather is still beautiful.

We're on the move,

AA Team

Tues Feb. 7, 2012

Off To A Slow Start

Arrived at our destination and started our trip with a few handfuls of 50-85lb tuna + a few wahoo. Weather is beautiful and we are hopeful..

We've got some time,

JUST CHECKING IN

We are a couple days into heading down to the Winter promise grounds in search of the Big Tuna, and yesterday all the gang spent most of the day rigging topshots and such. Today we are starting to get a bit more serious about the fishing end of things and the Crew is down giving, as they do every trip, the AA seminar.
Not to be forgotten (in the photo of the Wheel house) is our Lucky Charm standing by all the fish finding equipment ready for our arrival on Tuesday morning.
Until then, wish us luck and we hope for a nice end to our season. The weather is beautiful and the gang is all fired up!

Thurs. Feb. 2, 2012

Avet group home

Capt. Brian Kiyohara tied up the boat at the respectable hour of 0600 with one for the record books. For our small fishing community at the docks - it was major fanfare and the excitement grew as the crew began the unloading process. Three giant tuna over 300lbs, 24 tuna over 200lbs and many over 100lbs. All this meat was quality fresh and even though the work was just beginning for the passengers, as they huffed heavy carts to the top of the dock ..... everyone was in high spirits. Also a big thanks to all for being so patient during the lengthy picture-taking. We know the urge to get on the road after a 15 day trip is strong!!
A huge thanks to Ben Frazier for all the Avet support and to Jerry Brown for the generous donations - it is much appreciated!

Check out jackpot winners below- with a little help from Capt. Jordan Souza and Ben Frazier(photo courtesy of Bill Roecker): Also pictured the 3 over 3 - from left to right, Dennis Saylors 320lbs, Ralph Mikkelsen 306lbs and Dan Martin 312lbs (thanks to Bob Hara for that shot) and the Group photos - the panoramic by Bob Hara and other group shot, courtesy of Bill Roecker).

Below, posted a few photos taken during the trip (thanks to Bobby Gene Gott for these shots) - it's hard to imagine being there even with the pictures as proof!!!

Jordan helping out Ben Frazier with his 225lb beauty & Galen showing us..well, it's either his 266lber or 205lber, you decide which it is- he caught both the same day.

Next two shots are Jan Howard with her pretty darn close to 3 - 286lber and great wahoo shot with one of her old besties, Shawn Steward.

Permanent fixture Bill Randall with his 240lber and big winner of the trip's famous cribbage tournament -

Pat Gallagher, John Metcalf with their over 200lbers..... and Bobby Gott's thumb.

First time on the American Angler, Dan Martin posing with his 312lber and Charlie Iwashita (a favorite with the passengers because of his award-winning personality) with a little encouragement from Capt Kiyohara.

Regular passenger Dennis Saylors who has taken many, many long range trips in his career - was all smiles with his whopping 320lber, the last fish of the trip!!

Long Ranger, Ralph Mikkelsen with a lifetime achievement award - 6 tuna over 300lbs over the years.

Thanks so much to everyone for being a part of this memorable trip....we had almost everyone sign back up and can't wait to see you all next year, if not before. Enjoy your fish - you earned it!!

American Angler

The last trip of the year is on it's way with Ken's Custom Reel Gang. You can only imagine their anticipation after the success of the voyage that just returned. Check back for reports and have a great superbowl Sunday!!!

Sun Jan 29, 2012

What a great way to finish our trip....four more fish over 200lbs (Robin LeMaster, Bill Randall, John Metcalf, Steve Leonhart) and then the last fish of the trip to hit the deck was a 320lb beast caught by regular veteran angler, Dennis "Red" Saylors. (He's fished a lot of long trips and earned that one).
We feel very fortunate to experience this level of big tuna fishing and can't wait to get home to begin eating fresh fish.

On our way home,

The Guys

Sat Jan 28, 2012

Good fishing again today - with a few big standouts. Dennis "Red" Saylors rolled out of bed and hooked back to back 200lbers.... a 226 first bait and a 207 on his second bait and then during a mid afternoon lull, Ralph "the Long Ranger" Mikkelsen caught a 306lber.. chalk that up as number 6 on his 300lb lifetime list.

Making Memories,

The Guys

Fri Jan 27, 2012

No Complaints

Today we experienced slower fishing due to lack of conditions which made it a touchy bite, it was the toughest fishing day of the trip, but still beautiful weather and plenty of fish on board.

Enjoying the Life,

The Guys

Thur Jan 26, 2012

Another good day of fishing on the American Angler. The guys had 5 from 200 - 234lbs;the recipients were John Metcalf, Ralph Mikkelsen, Pat Gallagher with 2!! and Charlie Iwashita. Everyone else enjoyed the benefits of catching very nice mid - 100s tuna.

The weather is beautiful and we're livin' the dream,

The Guys

Wed Jan 25, 2012

Finally

The wind backed off and left us with a peaceful, enjoyable day. Once again we had a steady pick on nice grade yellowfin with several in the 120 - 190lb class. Robin LeMaster led the 200lb parade with a 232lber and Glenn Bummer, Ben Frazier, John Metcalf and Sam Cornell also joined the club with their 200lbers from 208 - 215.
Things are coming together and guys are having a good time.

Nice Weather Sure Helps,

The Guys

Tues Jan 24, 2012

A Different Day

We woke up to find conditions were different from the day before and the off color, choppy water seemed to be the difference between biting fish and non-biting fish. We still saw them, but it was a much slower pick on 60 - 180lbers.
Veteran Angler, Bill Randall, showed that experience pays off with a whopping 255lber to go with yesterday's 240lber.
Check back tomorrow,

The Guys

Mon Jan 23, 2012

We had a great day today, with drifts that included a lot of personal bests such as..... Dynamo Dan Martin's 312lber, Lady Angler Extraordinare Jan Howard with a 286lber, Bill Leonard's 266lber, Galen Steward had a 266 and a 205lber, Bill Randall (100 days in 2011) with a 240lber and Robin Lemaster (famous for his blu cheese dressing....)with a 230lber. Everyone else enjoyed bountiful fishing with tuna from 100 - 190lbers.

The Lay of The Land

We arrived on the grounds this morning and found very good sign of tuna. In the upcoming days, the challenge is going to be to figure out how to weed out the smaller fish to get to the bigger ones.
We scoped out all available areas and hope to have it narrowed down for the morning.
Ben Frazier of Avet reels, using a hxw raptor and 1x3 seeker rod, landed a 225lb beauty, nicest fish today.

Looking Forward to Tomorrow,

The Guys

One Of The Best

Good tuna fishing, good wahoo fishing, good yellowtail fishing and good weather seems like an unbeatable combination. Believe it or not that wasn't the best thing that happened this trip, the best part of the trip was what happened to everyone on the boat. The outstanding fishing took a backseat to the chemistry of everyone bonding together and having a great vacation and of all the trips that we as a crew have been a part of, very few rival how fun this one was.
Our annual Accurate trip hosted by Gary Teraoka was once again a huge success. We would like to thank Jack from Accurate Fishing Products, Calstar Rods, Izorline, Baja Fish Gear, Smitty Belts, Salas Lures, Oceanic Productions, Mustad Hooks, Maui Gems and Sportsman Seafood for all of the gracious donations that they provided.

What a day

We had a phenomenal day on the ocean...it started about 3am and from there it was beautiful, steady fishing throughout the day, with some 40-80lbers and the rest of the tuna being 100 - 180lbers.
The weather is nice, but forecasted to change here pretty soon, so we're going to start traveling before the wind comes up and we'll check back in while we're on the road.

Life Is Good,

The Guys

Wed Jan 11, 2012

Great day of fishing - everyone had a few wahoo and at least one nice tuna. Ed Morrison and David Claverie were today's golden boys, catching fish over 200lbs and we are hoping for more of the same tomorrow!

Capt. Ray called to let us know they are on their way home. They finished up the trip with 10 more beautiful tuna - mostly 150 - 190lbers, with one cow, a 217lb caught by Les Stark. Everyone on the boat has at least two nice ones, the weather is predicted to be nice all the way home - they're stoked!
Check back for Friday's eta.

Report from the bridge tonight was 20 fish and 9 of those cows - from John Haskin's 273lber...Chris S., Bob H., David P., Chris R., John W., Wes C., Zeke to Bill Randall's 202lber. The guys decided to hang out until the morning because they may have the opportunity of a lifetime right where they sit, not to mention the beautiful flat, calm weather.
Morale is high, everyone on the boat has a big fish and they are looking forward to tomorrow morning. Sweet Dreams.

American Angler

Sat. Dec 31, 2011

The boat left a message last night reporting a much nicer day of fishing - 16 tuna from 140-217lbs and 5 of those were cows...to sweeten the deal were a couple of wahoo, one of them a whopping 91lber caught by Zeke. Capt. Ray says all is well on board and everyone wishes their loved ones a happy new year.

American Angler

Fri. Dec 30, 2011

The boat checked in last night with their first report....they had beautiful weather, a handful of tuna (including one 200lber caught by Bill Graham), but overall a slow start. They rolled in after the grey and had good sign, caught a few fish, had a few heartbreaks and then the light switch went off and never came back on. The rest of the day's efforts produced a handful of wahoo and a few smaller tuna.
There's more time and sounds like everyone is doing well.

The Tour

We started out on the beach looking for yellows at their last known location. Unfortunately fish have tails and they swim around and they were nowhere to be seen so we had to go into search mode. Finally at hot spot number four, we found a decent ball of fish and had steady yo yo action. When it slowed down, we started up the line thinking that finding another productive area would not be a problem. We ended touring the coast as most of the usual haunts were dry. Just about the time when it looked like the day was over we ran over a good sized sonar school and we were busy as the sun was going down.
Even our experienced big fish anglers were all smiles as many said that they had forgotten how fun yellowtail fishing can be.

Heading North By Northwest,

The Guys

Sat. Dec 3, 2011

Enjoyable

After spending several days in search of cows, we moved up the line to just fish. Alot of the lower banks involves looking for mammals, so we spent three days constantly on the move. Our last day which was definitely the best we sat on the anchor all day but half the group never got a bite. Today we put the anchor down and started scratching small tuna and the longer we sat the better it got. It was never wide open - but it was plenty good enough for everybody to cast a bait out and get bites and land a few fish. For those of you at home watching the reports and wondering about fresh fish, there is going to be plenty of premium grade sashimi available.

Laughing And Having A Good Time,

The Guys

Scott Taves would like to wish his wife Pam a happy birthday and Kevin Nonoguchi also wishes his daughter Janine a very special 16th sweet sixteen.

Fri. Dec. 2, 2011

Opportunity

We started off on the anchor with no sign and we all had the feeling of "not this again" but that changed when we picked up the anchor and started moving around. We saw a few jumpers and when we would get close, we saw scattered sonar marks and fathometer marks. Unlike what's been going on, the fish reacted and we actually hooked a few. For about two hours it was legitimate big fish fishing where we had several fish hooked and they were showing around us good.
Our first couple of fish were 50lbers but they got big in a hurry. We hooked all our fish on 60-100lb gear and we payed the price. We unfortunately lost way more good fish than we landed, but we definitely got a sample.
Big fish honors went to John Wataguchi with his 156lber and Jay Maeda with a 125lb.

Thur. Dec 1, 2011

Humble

Quite often we take the fruits of the ocean for granted until she becomes stingy and doesn't want to give anything up. We woke up with sign of good tuna around the boat but after an hour of sitting there for no bites or boils it's hard to convince anybody including myself that there are any fish for the taking. Once again we had beautiful weather for scouring the horizon for birds and fish due to unlimited visability. We saw a little bit of sign of better ones for no reaction and ended up the day with only school sized fish to show for our efforts. We plan to try a different area down here on the banks hopefully for some good action and at least a few jackpots.

Thank God For Good People,

The Guys

Wed. Nov. 30, 2011

Swing And A Miss

After striking out on hooking a few cows, we thought that we would try to go out and find the mother load wahoo kelp. It sounded like the logical move as we had a few other code boats keeping things honest as we went went out to search for action. We found the temp break that we were looking for and saw signs of life in the right area and had a couple of blind strikes but we experienced some letdown when the kelps we found had no fish.
We are bandaging our sores as we go back into the grounds to try for some tuna. Both of our code boats saw signs of school fish and a few cows that didn't bite but we hope to change that tomorrow. We have great working weather, we have crossed out where not to go, morale is high as we hope to break out of our minor slump.
B.J. Beck and Keegan Guillory were stoked to be some of the chosen few to catch a fish today as we aim to change that tomorrow.

Can't Get A Hit Without Swinging The Bat,

The Guys

Tues. Nov 29, 2011

Try Try Try

We arrived at the Lower Banks before daylight hoping that today was going to be the day. We saw sign of mid grade fish right away but it was real apparent that they were going to be hard to catch. The fish we did see were wild and as fast as they would come together they would blow apart. We then went into search mode and looked the better part of the day for zero sign. We finally saw the right batch of mammals that had a good dab of cows on it and things were almost textbook. We rolled up on them, saw the fish on machines and when we stopped we had three enormous blowouts behind the boat but unfortunately did not hook a fish. We stayed in that general vicinity the rest of the evening but could never find anything to work with. Only one small tuna joined us aboard today but we still have plenty of time.

We Will Try Our Best,

The Guys

Mon. Nov. 28, 2011

Starting Off

We are enjoying beautiful weather on our ride down to the grounds as morale and expectations are high. We stopped midmorning to break it up and work out the kinks and found some yellowtail and smaller grade tuna that fit the bill. After a few hours of over and unders, we are moving down to the lower banks with high hopes. Jun Akiike shows one of the rewards of the Salas 6x jr.

FINISH WITH A BANG!

If you come on enough of these trips you'll see it all - good fishing, slow fishing and many times what happened yesterday really doesn't dictate what might happen tomorrow. Today things were Right..... we started our drift in the gray light and by 10:00 am we had caught all we needed.
The photo of the day is Mr. Matt with just one of the many we tagged this morning.
The weather is beautiful and the forecast for now looks nice.
What a great trip, what a great group of anglers. We will be traveling for the next few days and will post an ETA on Monday for Tuesday's arrivial.

GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD TIMES,

Thurs. Nov. 17, 2011

NICE FISH!!

Today things were a little different, a bit slower on the bites but by the late afternoon things came together for us and when it was all said and done we had another 19 beautiful Tuna in the hatch with some random Wahoo and we are liking that.
The photo of the day is the "before" shot on the jackpot fish of the day because the rail shot (well just say My Bad!) didn't come out too sweet. Bill H. landed a 212 lb tuna after an epic fight which we call a trip-maker, congrats. We have one more day and then it's time to make the long run home and anything we catch tomorrow is just a bonus.

GOOD NIGHT AND THE GANG IS HAVING FUN,

Wed. Nov. 16, 2011

KEEP THE BALL ROLLING

Well another day of great fishing - we picked throughout the day with 1 to 5 fish going while we where drifting. You still have to work at it, but by the end of the day we put down 55 beautiful Yft with most of the grade being 90 to 140 lb fish. Our photo of the day is passenger regular, Miss Marianne, with her 146lb Tuna - all she's ever wanted is a tuna over 100lbs and so she's one happy angler today.
We have more time down here before we have to head home, so whatever we catch will be icing on the cake.

GOOD NIGHT AND THE WEATHER IS GREAT,

The AA Gang

Next 3 trips have room - Nov 26 (ten day), Dec. 7 (eleven day), Dec 26 (ten day)...

TUNA FISHING!!!

There has never been a better time to go Tuna fishing then right now... we made the long run down to Lower - Lower zone and it was well worth it.
The photo of the day is the Late bite and we ended our day with around 50 Tuna all mixed from 50 to 200 lb with the two biggest models landed by Mike with a 202 yft and Eric with a 206.5.
We have a few more days down here at a place we like to call Paradise and we'll just see what happens next.

FLAT CALM

We did take the opportunity to go offshore at least one more time this season to try to catch a Tuna and we ended by picking up 16 of nice 25 to 30 Yellowfin to finish off the trip and now it's time to roll on home.
The photo of the day is Dennis and K.C. with their Tuna.
We would like to thank all of the Angler Choice regulars and some new guys for making this trip and Thank You to Luc Ofeild for being the sponsor as always with lots of great raffle prizes and giveaways.

GOT WHAT WE NEEDED!!!

Let's just say it wasn't easy, but with a lot of hard work cranking the handles on their Yoyo rods, the gang finished up with Yellowtail for all.
The photo of the day is Lou with the average size fish caught today - some were tipping the scale at 30 + lbs, good grade. We are running up the line again and are going to swing wide to see if there are any Tuna left for us.

GOOD NIGHT,

RATHER BE LUCKY THAN GOOD ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!

We are on a Yellowtail mission and tried some of our usual spots which didn't kick out the results we were hoping for, but when it seemed we were in the worst of the water temp and color, we found Yellows biting full speed on the Yoyo Jigs. It really made the day.... don't know what else to say about that.
We are anchored up for the night in the Lee of an Island and will finish up our trip in the morning before heading up the line.

GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

WORKING UP THE ROAD

Yesterday we ended up finding all the Dorado we needed and worked up the Ridge for today's fishing. We did have a little surprise on a short stop for a few Wahoo which jumpstarted the day and then picked & scratched at yellows. We also had an incidental capture by R.C. - 1 lone Bluefin Tuna, as shown in the picture of the day with assist from Capt. Cam.

GOOD NIGHT,

WE STUCK IT OUT FOR AS LONG AS WE COULD

Today I would like to say things got better, however that was not the case; we did manage to land half a dozen nice tuna like the one shown here in the photo of the day with Uncle Bill, but for the most part, today was All Show and No Go!
We are moving on to a new destination for tomorrow's fishing and hope to find a little something-something to work on in the near future.

GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK,

The AA Gang

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

Fishing trips don't always start off with a bang, but usually, it comes together at some point, and today we felt like maybe we were at that point to get things going. We made the run down here to the lower banks and had scratch fishing on good grade Tuna - 99 to 260lbs, photo op is Dennis with the biggest of the day and also Mr. Art had a 201 lb Tuna for his Birthday present (hello to the family...) We are going give it a go again tomorrow and hope for some fun.

GOOD WEATHER AND GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

Wed. Nov. 2, 2011

THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER

There are times in this Ocean that wherever you go the fish are biting and then there are times when they aren't and today was one of those times when they weren't.... I don't like it, but this is Fishing. And so we are still on a Southerly course in search of biting fish, hopefully in our near future.
Today all we have to report are a couple of Wahoo and today's picture features one of those catches made by Dennis Lady, assist from Capt. Cam.
The weather is still beautiful and we have lots of time - with some luck this will all work out in the end, but we'd much rather catch a bunch fish sooner than later any day of the week!

GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

Tues. Nov 1, 2011

GOT A LATE START

We haven't made good speed heading down the last couple of days and once we arrived on the upper end of the Ridge late, conditions were poor: lack of flow and not a lot of life, but the weather is Flat and we are heading south and we're going to take it as it comes.

GOOD NIGHT,

Sport Chalet is Back

Capt. Ray brought the AA home after a 10 day trip with a group of guys that enjoy fishing together as much as they enjoy fishing.
Their fresh fish load consisted of mostly yellowtail and dorado - many beautiful grade - and a few Wahoo and tuna to round it out. Thanks as always to Brad Lemoine, for putting this trip together and keeping it on the map - much appreciation and everyone loves their coleman and igloo coolers and appreciate all the Berkeley line throughout the trip.
But best news of all is that Bobby Cass is doing just fine.... see you all next October!

Almost

Not knowing what the day was going to bring with reports being hit or miss the last couple days, we woke up with our game faces on. Still having good weather in our favor we rolled into the zone around 9:00am ready to rock. It wasn't long after when we had our first jig strike thinking here we go. As a few hours went by and no more strikes, the writing was beginning to show on the wall. Even though the day ended with only a couple yellowfin tuna, everyone kept a positive mindset and morale stayed high.
We called it a trip, the guys bundled up their gear and we're enjoying a beautiful ride in.

Breaking the ride up

We're enjoying our new well deserved beautiful weather and arrived this afternoon to new scenery with only a few hours to spare and had some surface action fun. Right out of the gate the yellows were putting on a show chasing the surface iron and it was as good as it gets, with long rods flying and every cast a possibility to have a visual you would never forget. After the smoke cleared everyone could agree it was the perfect "break-the-ride-up-pit-stop". In today's photo we would like to give a special thanks to these fine gentlemen, our fire fighting team; Rocky, Monteil and Tony and what a great job they do.
Tomorrow is our last fishing day of the trip and so we are rolling up in hopes of some local tuna action.

Enjoying the weather,

Going through the motions

Falling into the back side of our trip, today we spent most of our last morning down here trying to take care of our wahoo virgins. Not having the best of weather working conditions and no great success, we opted to wind in the jigs and do some anchor fishin. Coming to terms that the wahoo mission just wasn't going to happen, the boys enjoyed the rest of the morning playing around catching & releasing yellowtail, and then after picking up the ground tackle around lunch, it was time to start heading up the line.
With the forecast looking good, we are hoping to enjoy a beautiful ride up.

Up and Up,

AA Team

The Royal Star caught big tuna on their current ten day trip - !! We have a few spots on our upcoming trips (especially our after Thanksgiving 10 day which is light but definitely going)...call Lori in the office. Now it's go time.

Wed. Oct.26, 2011

Better Luck

After coming up short in yesterday's trophy hunt today instead of going long and coming up short, we went short and came up big.
Putting yesterday's tough luck behind us we woke up this morning with our heads held high and welcomed a new day.
Downsizing our gear and shifting into Dorado mood - all it took was a couple of exciting stops to get the job done. Almost every bait turned into an acrobatic Dorado jumping, flipping, and putting on a show....it was organized pandemonium with some spectacular results as shown by today's picture featuring Bob Snyder and Rick Okuni with their big bull flatheads.
With the weather coming up a little, we're going to take our time and start heading up the line.

Good effort

Waking up after relocating south last night, everyone had wahoo on the brain. Putting the jigs in the water just after sunrise we managed to scrape up four wahoo, but as mid-morning rolled around...we all realized that the big hit on wahoo wasn't going to happen and feel fortunate for the catch that we have.
By the afternoon we took a timeout on trolling and had some more fun yanking and cranking on yellowtail and so using up a few more rounds of tags at the end of the day, one can say it was another fun day in the sun.
We're warmed up now and are going to keep moving south to hunt trophy tuna tomorrow.
Today's photos are Best friends Richard Tanaka and Bill Randall showing off wahoo love as Hector Jaramillo Jr. and Freddy Hatashita say hi to Hector Sr.

Sun. Oct. 23, 2011

Waking up to a piercing red sunrise and beautiful weather, one could only think that things were feeling right this morning. Just after breakfast we got the conditions we needed and it was go time. Once we got rolling it wasn't long before the sweat was dripping and the high fives were smacking. Staying steady all morning and afternoon on plump 18-22lb yellowtail biting the fly line and the yo-yo jig -with some getting lucky hooking an occasional Bluefin tuna or yellowfin (as shown off by capt. Cam and Ron Anderson). And just when we thought it couldn't get any better, eleven anglers were rewarded with premium sized wahoo and Mr. Dale Monday's smile couldn't tell the story any better.
We are going to continue our journey south in search of more playful fish.

Warm Up

After motoring down the last couple days and fighting a very strong uphill current, we arrived at our first destination around mid -afternoon. Taking our time and getting a feel for the lay of the land, we got the anchor down shortly after. It didn't take long before we had fished nice grade yellows, one token wahoo, a couple yellowfin tuna thrown in the mix and with the sunset working against us, at the end of the day everyone was able to stretch their wings and shake the dust off. We are going to spend the night and try our luck tomorrow in hopes of good conditions and good results.
Today's photo includes capt Bobby kiso and Bobby Cass displaying one of the nice grade yellows down here.

Enjoying the weather,

BLUEFIN IN THE FALL?

This hasn't been what you would call a "Normal Year" anyway you slice and dice it, so why would our Fall fishing go into any other catagory than that. Last year we had Epic Tuna fishing at the Rocks and wide open Wahoo fishing on the inside, and yes this year is Different. Today we had a good day of Bluefin fishing on the Ridge? I've been fishing down here since 1981 on Long Range Boats and never seen BFT in the Fall - Who knew.

The photo of the day is Pat with one of the 64 BFT that we caught today with Yes on the Yellows in the mix which most of them were released. We are running up tonight to gain some latitude planning on a stop late tomorrow for maybe a Bass or two for Lunch.
We had nice weather today but I think that will change in our near future.

THE THIRST FOR MORE!

Yesterday when we landed that 45lb Tuna I told myself, it would be nice to catch a couple hundred of these beautiful Tuna and then stopped that thinking process and told myself there is never Enough.
Today we landed a couple more of these nicer Tuna down on the Ridge and Yes the Yellows and Mahi were biting again today for us as well.
The photo of the day is Craig with so far what is 1st place, a 50lb Tuna.
We are moving up a bit for tomorrow's fishing and all is well - the weather has been very Sunny with just enough breeze to keep you cool.

GOOD TIMES!

We had one of those kinda days where the morning never seemed to get with it, and then when things started to happen - the afternoon felt too short! The Yellowtail and dorado really wanted to bite and we did manage to scrape up a couple of Wahoo, but the few Tuna we caught, like the one pictured and caught by Mr. Steve Carson, were the stand outs.
We have a couple of days left and hope for good luck.

START UP KIT!

Well after a 48 hour run, we arrived at our destination to begin our trip. I would have to say the conditions weren't looking all that Hot around lunchtime, but by mid afternoon the tide was flowing. We had steady action on just about everything: Yellowtail, Yellowfin, Dorado and Bluefin Tuna?
The photo of the day is Tom and Capt. Kiso with one of the BFT we landed this afternoon. Like I said we're just getting the ball rolling and hoping for lots of good luck.

CHECKING IN

We spent the last couple of days out at the Rocks and for us, the Tuna got the better part of the deal because we just couldn't get any onboard. We saw fish throughout the day, and even hooked one... but when the timer went off, the score was Zero Tuna 4 us.
We didn't walk away empty handed though - the photo of the day, Yes that's Tom S. in the picture showing off the grade of Yellows that we were rewarded for our efforts. We are planning on stopping the boat at San Benitos Island for dinner tonight, it has been a lttle bumpy the last week out here. Things are changing out here on the grounds every day so if I were going on an upcoming trip, I would make sure my Wahoo tackle was The Best of the Best. If you don't have any Wahoo gear and need to purchuse such type tackle, you might find what you need at M&M Custom Rods tackle shop located right across the street from the Landing. I just thought I'd throw that out there, this being his trip and all.

GOOD NIGHT,

TARGETED SPECIES?

Well I'd have to say it hasn't been a bed of Roses out here the last couple of days - the wind has been up and the Tuna fishing for us has been poor. We made it out to the Stones this morning after a bumpy ride and didn't have much luck with the Tuna, however there was fair sign of premium Yellows and some Mahi for action. We have one more day here and we hope our luck is better in the morning for Tuna.

GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

We checked out the scenery down below with only a handful of Dorado to show for our efforts. We are putting plan B into place and will report after a day at the Rocks. Wish us luck

ROCKEM - SOCKEM TYPE FISHING!!!

Well the title pretty much sums up the morning... very nice quality Yellows mixed in with very good grade Dorado. We are at the point where it is time to target Tuna, which has been a tall order around these waters. We are enjoying a nice dinner in the Lee of Mag Bay and plan on taking a look outside here tomorrow in hopes of, may I say, Turning over the right rock.
There is a little sign of fish at the Rocks so that will be plan B if needed - and the weather has been a lttle bumpy so we hope that changes in our near future. Wish us Luck.
GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

NOW WE'VE GOT THIS TRIP STARTED

Today was our second day of fishing: the first day we looked at some area above where we have been fishing, for not the best results. Today, again, we didn't start in the right place but with determination, we found what we neeeded. The day ended with a catch of very nice grade Yellows, a few handfuls of Dorado and the one lone Wahoo caught by Tom, shown in today's picture.
We are going to stick with what's working and hope for more good luck here and see what our weather is going to do, it has been a little breezy the last couple of days.

TIME TO ROLL UP THE LINE

After a few days of very good fishing down below, it is time to beat feet and get some altitude. All of the gang have plenty of fish, however, we do need to target Tuna - so that is what's on the menu for the day after tomorrow.
We are going to break the ride up somewhere and play around for a couple hours in the morning and then get back on the road. The weather was wonderful today and the ride so far tonight is great. Check in later.

GOOD BYE HILARY!

Well in this morning's weather forecast, Lil Miss Hilary made a hard left turn to the West and is no longer any threat to us at all. As for the fishing - what can we say, the Yellowtail started biting throughout most of the night and into the morning hours and yes of course there were more dorado to go with it... so this afternoon we went into search mode offshore and about the only fish we found off the shallows was one lone Wahoo caught by Dick on the troll.
We are going to relocate our position away from the Mahi's and try for something different. Oh and yes the weather is gorgeous.

GOOD NIGHT,

WE MADE IT TO THE GROUNDS

After a couple of days of traveling, we made it to our destination. The first spot didn't work out so well, but you know how we roll.... Never give up! It was late in the afternoon and we were running out of daylight when we got on a spot of Dorado that really wanted to bite and so the day was saved. We are going to give it a try down here again tomorrow and work on getting some Yellows and then we'll just take it from there.
I know you all at home are worried about the weather, so please know that it is beautiful right now and Ms. Hilary is forecasted to go way outside from our position - so Don't worry your Guys are in good hands!
GOOD NIGHT,

The week ended on a perfect note
Capt. Brian Kiyohara brought back the third short trip of the week with limits of yellowfin tuna once again. He and the crew enjoyed mixing it up with the local fleet and for him, getting back to his Pacific Queen roots and we all enjoyed getting to meet a whole bunch of new passengers. What a fun week it was!
Thanks so much to everyone that came out on this day and a half trip and gave the American Angler a try.

Congrats to jackpot winner, Miles Kan, (thank you for photo) for his 24.5lb tuna!

Whatever It Takes

With the day and a half fish located at a distance further than usual, we had to adapt and try to leave earlier in order to reach the fish and take advantage of the morning bite. With luck on our side, all of our 28 passengers were able to duck prior arrangements and get to the dock early which enabled us to go the distance. We started off the morning by getting on the same kelp that was so productive for us last trip and caught 84 yellowfin tuna and 22 dorado. With the "sweat off" we fished our way back up the line and enjoyed a few more good stops on the tuna and picked several more kelp fish along the way.
We ended up the day with high morale, limits of tuna and plenty of dorado and small yellows to go around. Our 10 year old, David Babros, with the assistance of Andrew Viola, is a prime example of the good times enjoyed by all.

One more short trip - on it's way early...

Thurs. Sept.22, 2011

Good Weather

We spent the night on the sea anchor and rolled around a little due to uphill current and 17kts of nw wind. At daylight, the sea condition started backing off and we had high hopes for a good day. We moved up to the kelp that we were on the previous evening and the fish were there waiting and willing to bite. After a two hour drift we were limited out on yellowfin tuna and heading up the line in search of bluefin tuna. The search was not as productive as we wanted as we managed only two fish, but we can't always have it all.
Today's picture features 11 year old Anthony Hernandez living the life with a little assist from Capt. Taro.

Unanswered Questions

We started out the morning in the same zone where we had good fishing just a couple of days ago. It took a few hours before it became very apparent that the sign of tuna was not around. Once again we had to rely on the talents of the crew and we went hunting for kelps. We spotted plenty of good kelps, for not very much when we happened on one that had a little sign. We captured 30 tuna and 30 flats and we used this as a point of reference the rest of the afternoon. Around four in the afternoon we started to get a few strikes and then went back to the main kelp and the tuna were there willing and waiting. We had steady fishing until dark and ended up with a nice catch of fish.
Why Did They Wait Til The Afternoon? We Will Never Know,

The Guys

One Stop Shop

We were very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. These yellowfin tuna have really been on a time of day type biting schedule. What that means in simple terms is that they are not up and in the biting mode throughout the whole day but instead only during the "bite time window". We were lucky that we had the opportunity to be be in the right zone and we took full advantage as we took part in wide open fishing. We filled out our daily limit of tuna in one stop and used the rest of the day catching a decent grade of Dorado.
Pictured is Rex Kirkpatrick who was dressed for the occasion in his Sunday best, as he shows off a couple of his very first yellowfin tuna.

GOT WHAT WE NEEDED

We needed 3 bigger fish to sew up the jackpots, and that's just what we got. The photo of the day is Steve and Bobby with the first of our 3 fish for the day, being these Fatso Albacore. The day worked out well, the weather was nice and now we are on our way home. This Albacore area - all I've got to say is God only knows what to think about it - there have been a few fish seen in a 15 to 18 mile line on a temp break, but just a few per boat that got a taste of these beauties.

YOU CAN SCRATCH TUNA OFF THE LIST!!!

We chose to fish at a higher altitude to the... let's just call it the day and a half zone, to finish our trip fishing for Tuna. Well I gotta say, it worked out just fine. Let's start with the photo of the day - Aaron caught his first Tuna ever... which weighed in at 129.5lbs which is not uncommon on a 7 day this time of the year, but not offshore fishing 150 miles from home. The fish bit his trolling lure, (what we call a Blind Strike) and that seemed to steer our day in the right direction. We then found a Kelp with good fish on it and later in the day we got on a school of YFT all schooled up and biting.
This group has always been lucky so we'll see how they do tomorrow. What a great day!

CHECKING IN AND ROLLING UP THE LINE

We are into smooth seas again - late yesterday the wind picked up for a while, but by daylight it was all better. Yesterday's fishing was typical early fall type fishing with a little bit of everything biting: Yellows, dorado and big Pargo. I haven't seen pargo this big since 1984? Wow I'm getting old.
The photo of the day is Uncle Larry with one of his Pargo snappers. We are just trying to get some altitude for tomorrow's fishing.

GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK,

TODAY WE ARE BACK ON TRACK!

We officially started fishing yesterday however with only one Tuna for the day not a whole lot to report.
Today on the other hand the gang has forgotten all about the day before and all I can say is that it worked out perfectly. We started our day with full rack type Yellowtail fishing - most of the fish 16 to 20 lbs, with a few stand outs. We proceeded to look offshore with good fishing on Dorados and on the last kelp of the afternoon, we picked up a handful of the the 25 to 30lb YFT as shown in the photo of the day (caught by Mr. Skip Sato with The Big Kid holding up the fish).
We are running down the line tonight and we'll start fishing again in the morning.

GOOD NIGHT,

We took a swing at the ball, hoping that something changed out at the Stones - there is a sign of nicer Tuna and also some wahoo to go with it, but what hasn't changed is lots of Sharks. We did get in a spot where things started to look good for hooking these Jackpot Tuna, but landing them was impossible. On the upside though, we did catch 14 Wahoo for our efforts.
We're moving on to the next spot, because that's how we do things on the AA. Check in tomorrow.

Just wanted to post a couple of pics from the last 2.5 day that came back a couple of days ago - Phil Leitner/Tim Harding - both caught this jackpot Dorado and they worked it out like gentlemen. Also a nice 3 generation shot of the Leitner family.

KEEPING IN STEP

We arrived down on the ridge this morning to finish up on our Yellowtail fishing - the conditions were perfect and the good grade fish wanted to bite, in fact they were biting anything and everything you had in your tackle box.
So now it's time to go fishing... we are going to take a stab outside and hope something has changed in a good way, and so that's what's on tomorrow's menu.
GOOD NIGHT,

WE GOT AN EARLY START TODAY

Sometimes you can be in the right place, with the right bait, in the dark and if you are very lucky - you could catch a personal best, which was the case this morning in today's photo of regular passenger John with Capt. Taro holding up the Big Boy. After the sun made it over the horizon, it took just a little adjusting to get located, and then we had pretty good Yoyo fishing for Yellows from before lunch until we took off. We are heading down below for tomorrow's fishing to see what we can come up with.

GOOD NIGHT,

Mon. Sept. 5, 2011

LITTLE ACTION TO GET THINGS STARTED

We opted to give it a go the first day of our 7 day and try for some YFT to warm up the troops. I'd have to say it took us most of the morning to get located, but with the We Never Give Up attitude, we found what we were looking for! We ended up with a daily limit of Yellowfin plus a few Dorado and a bonus Bluefin for the morning. We are heading down to do some Yelllowtail fishing in the morning and will just take it from there.
The weather is getting nicer all the time and we hope to keep picking away at the fish.
GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Boyz

James Hardware Gang Is Home

The boat came in this morning heavy with fish and gear. The wives have been washing jars and are ready to rock when the guys get home...bluefin, yellowfin and yellowtail were on the menu this trip and these gracious guests all came home with plenty.
Thanks to David J. Samarin for completely putting this trip together as always and to Dan Shubin, who was in charge once again of the food. (Sounds like the bbque was a big hit). And thank you to everyone in the group - we enjoy the company of everyone in this group and always look forward to seeing you!

You Win Some And You Lose Some

We moved up the line looking for kelps or some more of that better grade bluefin and things just didn't work as planned. Our course line was devoid of paddies and the area of tuna that was our bread and butter the last couple of weeks went down. Also, I need to make a correction from yesterday's report. Kevin Uraine is Alex Mendrin's son in law and not Morris Beliakoff's (his son in law Greg is also on the rig}.

The Payoff

With all the scratch fishing and tough weather that we've been having, we knew sooner or later that there would be payback. We had steady fishing all morning with 1-6 fish hooked at all times - never enduring a moment with no hook ups. After the life went away around lunchtime, we went on a 3 hour hunt around the yellowtail zone and it paid off with some good biting fish in the afternoon. There is no need to say more about the flat weather and good fishing as those of you at home are probably already green with envy.
Yesterday's hot dog was veteran angler Big Daddy Bill Shubin with his four big bluefin out of the last stop and today's hot stick was first timer Morris Beliakoff's son-in-law, Kevin Uraine, as he quickly mastered the art of yo-yoing a jig.

Float Day

As fishermen we spend many days on the ocean through all moon phases, tide changes, weather conditions, and see good fishing as well as tough fishing. The reason why we do this and keep going out is for the opportunity to be there when the ocean floats. Today we had flat calm weather and it was one of those days where the ocean opened up its doors and there was sign of fish everywhere. We went stop to stop all morning on mixed school-sized bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna and today everything reacted and bit full speed.
The only thing that could have made the day any better was if there were a few big fish in the mix. What do you think happened next? Of course we found a bunch of 25-45lb bluefin and as you might have guessed....we connected. Everyone on the boat landed one of these trophies and we were on our way towards a beautiful stop when a school of ravenous yellowfin arrived on the scene and shut us down.
Luckily there was a local boat within striking range as they gladly took over the school - and by then everyone was done for the day.
We hope that all Family and Friends of those aboard are sterilizing jars for canning, buying white rice to go with the sashimi, and are bringing plenty of coolers to meet our arrival at the dock. All aboard are looking forward to sharing the bounty from this float day and many know they will have plenty of "best Friends" when they arrive home.

Fri. Aug 26, 2011

We had tuna around us today as we fished stop and go style, and although we never had a stop that was "the one", we were busy all morning.
We'd like to thank Mike Goldsmith for putting the trip together and the Chasin Tuna gang along with the regulars who joined the trip. Thanks everyone!

Thurs. Aug 25, 2011

We traveled from the Island and about an hour after daylight, ran across a 2 fish meter mark and had a jig strike - when going back up to the bridge, a school of bluefin appeared from nowhere. By the time we had shut down the engines, there was a frenzy in the corner and they were biting fast....we got the first 50 fish fast and then it slowed down to a plunker.
While we were plunking, Lloyd Cotton set the hook and could immediately tell he he was tied into something different. The battle ensued and all the while we were plunking away..... an hour and a half later, we saw what was approx. a 100lb bluefin, but due to the rough weather...the flourocarbon exploded right at color. Lloyd being the gentleman that he is, was just appreciative for the fight of a lifetime.
After that, we drove around and scratched a few more fish for the rest of the day.

Wed. Aug 24, 2011

We arrived at Guadalupe Island and it was a wonderful reprieve from the choppy weather. After daylight we saw sign of jumping tuna, which got on us right away and stuck around for most of the day. In the morning they put on a good show and were tough to hook, but the ones that were hooked, were landed. In the afternoon, the bite was steady, however, the sharks were as bad as I have ever seen them and it was impossible to land even a single fish.
We landed 11 beautiful fish and all of us enjoyed fishing in the flat calm, and now we're moving up the line in hopes of catching some offshore fish..
The Guys

Tues. Aug 23, 2011

We headed out in choppy weather and made the best with the conditions available offshore producing a handful of 35lb bluefin to go along with a decent catch of yellowfin tuna and the added bonus of good-sized dorado. Everyone has 2-5 fish per person as we are now ready to go angling for trophies tomorrow.

FUN DAY OFFSHORE FISHING

We made it up here in the local day and half zone by daylight and by snack time we were well on our way to having a good day of fishing on Yellowfin Tuna. The afternoon on the other hand was slim pickins at best, however we did manage to catch 2 Fatso Albacore to just make a guy wonder what is in store for us in the near future with all of this good fishing around?? We are going to finish our trip here in the morning and then it's time to head it for the barn. Wish us luck.

GOOD NIGHT,

UPDATE FROM THE AA

We have been traveling up the line all day in very nice weather - yesterday we fished the beach for Yellows which was Off the Hook. Today we finally found a kelp at the end of the day which had a few Dorado like the one Uncle George caught to break up the ride.
We will be targeting Tuna the next couple to days to finish the trip and from the reports, it sounds like it should be a good time.

GOOD NIGHT,

Ps Jenn, this for you!

THINGS CHANGE!

When we were traveling down to the Rocks, it sounded like we had a chance to pick at the nicer size tuna for sure but I've seen that place look like it did today and honestly, I wasn't feeling the Love. We are headed into the east to another fish zone and we hope our luck changes along with the new zip code.
The photo of the day is Walter winning the first fish of the trip award. Hope we don't see this gear making an appearance in the long range fleet as your go to outfit.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY ON THE WATER

We spent the morning finishing up on Yellows, which were ready to go at the crack of dawn, and by 10:00 am it was time to hit the road. We spent the day looking a various kelps with sign of life on some and others not so much.
The photo of the day is our angler, Dexter, with a Yellowtail he caught on one of the kelps, which you can see are a nice grade. We will be moving up the line tonight, fishing in the morning and then bundling up the rods to head for the barn..... hoping for more BFT action to top things off.

THIS SEEMS TO BE WORKING OUT!

We ended up down here on the coast to target Yellows and arrived just after daylight which happened to be the right time to be here. By lunchtime most of the gang had sore arms from having excellent success on the Yoyo Iron type fishing. The weather is still nice and we're enjoying a delicious dinner on the anchor.
The photos of the day are Allison & her father, Lynn, and Garrett with one of 3 seabass we got late in the day to top off another amazing day of fishing.

BACK ONLINE AND GETTIN EM!

Today was one of those days an angler dreams about - you can call it timing, good luck or whatever else you like, but all I know is that it was awesome to see this Bluefin bite like it did for us and for a lot of the other boats as well. After looking at so much fish earlier in the summer that didn't bite... now it's ON!
Most of the fish were 12 to 20lbs with a few of those Yellowfin mixed in the spots. We settled up jackpot, a 40lb bft caught by Rick with assist by Capt. Taro up on the bow.
We had flat weather today to go with the great fishing and it all happened in 1.5 day range, and we just happen to have a couple of those trips available early next month. I haven't seen Bluefin bite like they did today in many years!!!

GOOD NIGHT AND WHAT A DAY,

The boat called a bit ago with off-the-chart Bluefin fishing today. There will be report from the boat tonight, but wanted to put it out there that we have 2 spots on this upcoming Monday's 7 day trip and 2 spots on our 5 day trip departing Mon. Aug 22. Now is the time to go fishing and we'll be able to accomodate a few anglers and would like to do that!
We also just added a few short trips coing up in Sept. (a 1.5 day trip on 9/18, a 2.5 day trip on 9/20 and a 1.5 day trip on 9/23) If you've been waiting for things to start happening - that time is upon us.

What It Is All About

We all had a great time this trip - we caught a few fish, enjoyed the scenery, and had a great time hanging out. We were all assembled on the American Angler to celebrate the life of Charlie Constable. Charlie has been part of the sport fishing fleet since fishing with Bill Poole on the Malida after the war. Since he started fishing, he has never stopped and he became a familiar face to all of us in the business. We all were lucky to have the opportunity to become "educated" just from listening to his stories, being around his opinionated personality (we have all been called dumb shits many times), as all that knew him became better people for knowing him. This trip was comprised of close family and Friends as we spread Charlie's ashes in a beautiful cove below Penthouse Point on Isla Guadalupe now called "Charlie's Cove" 28 53.35 N latitude by 118 15.09 W longitude.
Charlie's sons Kent and Mark would like to thank the fleet for being so supportive but it is those of us that got to spend countless days on the water with Charlie that are the most thankful.

He Will Always Be Missed And Never Forgotten,

The Guys

On a side note: while traveling up kelping, we had a surprise jig and three bait fish stop on beautiful 22-25lb albacore caught by Charlie's grandson Sean Barnett, Red Saylors, birthday boy Steve Mellentin, and longtime friend of Charlie's, Robin LeMaster.

Wed. Aug 3, 2011

A Different Mode

Today when we found the tuna, they were a little more eager to bite then they were yesterday. We probably hooked over 50 tuna to get twenty as we got "Guadalupe'd". This 60-90lb grade on 40 and 50lb gear has to be one of the toughest matches that we encounter and with the normal hook pulls, chew offs and upwards of three sharks on us at a time, we did extremely well.
Everyone that fished got a nice tuna to take home, as everyone aboard enjoyed themselves.

Talk To You Tomorrow,
The Guys

Tues. Aug 2, 2011

No Explanation Except That They Are Not Biting

We had great current conditions at the island today and the fish showed because of it. We put the anchor down at around 6:30 in the morning and it only took about 5 minutes to see our first boil. We hooked a handful of fish but only landed one fish for several hours work at our first anchor spot. After 3 or 4 more spots, we watched fish boil at all of them for 13 hours and we ended up with only a couple handfuls of fish as it was about as tough to get a bite as I have ever seen.
Fishing for reaction bites while changing your bait often or the long soak were techniques tried as fish boiled all around and wouldn't bite. At home you are probably trying to overthink this but trust me, for some inexplicable reason today.... they just didn't bite.

We Will Never Know Why,
The Guys

Mon Aug 1, 2011

Searching

With slower reports from the tuna grounds at the island, we opted to start looking at spots that we haven't yet tried. The captain's no fish excuse list came out early with too windy, no current and too much current.
We made 6 anchor jobs for a handful of yellows with the only bonus being that they were nice grade like the one pictured with Kent Constable.
We moved to where we had good tuna fishing last trip - hooked 5 fish and landed 2 which were both in the 70lb class and then ran out of daylight.

Hope To Find Them Tomorrow,

The Guys

After fishing baits for fourteen hours, the rewards were definitely worth it. Constantly changing your bait 'til you find one the swims and then invest some time with it....that seems to be the ticket.
It's fun fishing, they stay around us and it's tough to get a bite, but when you do, it's a 50-80lb fish. Everybody aboard has had the opportunity to catch at least one beautiful tuna. For those of you at home with a family member or friend on the trip, you should plan on preparing the wasabi, white rice and look forward to some fresh sashimi.
Dust off that trick new two speed 40-50lb reel that you haven't had the chance to use yet and call the office for Sunday's 5 day back to the Island - now is the opportune time.

Loving every minute of it,

Wed. July 27, 2011

Left yesterday for our first run at the new Guadalupe process and all went well thanks to Mexican official's efficiency. We then headed to our destination and arrived to start fishing late afternoon. We were treated to an excellent show of fish splashing all around and ended up with 20 quality tuna from 60 - 80lbs - spectra with shorter top shots on 40 - 50# class being the go-to gear.
We see sign of this beautiful fish as it seems to be settling in to the classic touch style fishing with a beautiful reward in the end.
We are going to do this again on next trip departing Sunday morning - picture yourself there Monday afternoon - call Lori in the office, there are a couple of spots left on Sunday's 5 day and know that right now this is a special adventure to be shared by only a few.

We're happy to be here,

We enjoyed a great group of guys and look forward to having them back next summer. Fishing was slow but we did finish the trip with 17 mixed tuan and a few yellowtail. The company was the highlight of this trip. Big thanks to Nate Shill & Bob Hoose......

THANK YOU AND WE'RE HEADED TO THAT GLORIOUS ISLAND,

Mon. July 25, 2011

We saw plenty of fish from 7am to 5pm and it didn't take long to find jumpers of mixed bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna and something nice to stop on. The catch was that all the fish we were seeing did not bite.
Couldn't find anything on the captain's excuse list...... cannot blame commercial traffic (there was none), or moon phase or bad bait (it was excellent by the way), water turning over (it was beautiful). Not those or any other excuse that we have been able to use so many times from the bridge - all we can say is that they weren't biting for us today.
We managed 17 mixed grade tuna fish to go along with a few quality yellowtail produced from kelps. For future trips...seeing more sign of good sized yellowtail and dorado on kelps.
We would like to thank the guys from Volcom and Electric sunglasses for assembling a genuine and fun-loving group that know how to have a good time together.

NOT LIKE LAST TRIP?

Needless to say, each trip is different or as the case was during this trip.. day to day. Just because you may be on fish doesn't mean they're going to be the ones to bite - which was the case for us this last couple of days. We did manage to scrape up a few handfuls of fish - a mix of Bluefin, Yellowtail and Dorado. The weather on the other hand has been some of the nicest we've had all summer down here at this distance.
We would like to say thanks to Ken and Wes of Ken's Custom Reels for being the sponsors as always! Thanks to all of the gang for coming out and enjoying this beautiful Ocean that we've had.
Things seem to be perking up out here with some of the exotics showing up like the Dorado and some Yellowfin making an appearence.

MAKING IT HAPPEN!

We are on our way home with every angler on the boat taking home some gorgeous RSW Bluefin tuna. The photo of the trip is Jonna, who happens to be a very Fishey angler with one of bigger models she caught in the last couple of days. This is old news by now and we feel very fortunate we had the trip that we did catching 82 Bluefin Tuna with what has been going on the fishing scene but I have to say a few things about why we had the luck we did. First of all we are not the Biggest boat in the long range fleet and not the fastest and we don't hold quite as many fish as some of the bigger boats, however we do have the best crew that know how to use the finest binos money can buy. This is a team effort and of course the Capt has to get the boat in the right Zone...... but It's Ray, Taro, Bobby, Cameron, Jordan and Andrew that put fish on this boat.

We are leaving on another 2.5 day trip again tomorrow and we are pumped!

GOOD NIGHT,

This 2.5 day trip returned with a beautiful catch of yellowtail and nice collection of rock fish - all excellent eating. Thanks again to Matt Salas and Al Tokunaga for sponsoring this trip - The top producers on this trip were fishing with the traditional colors - scrambled eggs and blue&whites, 6x Jrs.

Jackpot winner, Bob Murakami, is pictured below with his 28.8lb Yellowtail and Dan Arden with his big 22lb sheephead.

YELLOWS,LINGS AND THINGS!

We are just wrapping up our 2.5 day running up in the not-so-nice weather that we have been experiencing the last couple of days. But we lacked in nice weather, was compensated by very good fishing. We had typical flurry-type fishing and somewhere in between we picked at Calicos and a nice assortment of good eating Rock fish.
The hot jigs of the trip were Salas scrambled eggs & blue/white 6x Jrs.
The Sponsors of our trip Matt Salas and Al Tokunaga had great giveaways: shirts, Lures and of course lots of charm.
We would also thank all of the gang - we really had a good time fishing with you all.
The photo of the day is Ms. Gale with one of her many Yellows she picked up the past days.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

Today the weather is finally warm and wind is light and variable, and the fish wanted to bite. We had a great day of Yellowtail fishing that started just after breakfast and lunch was served late.
We found a little honey hole that produced a few of the bigger models and that was a nice way to end our day before our ride back up the line.
The photos of the day are Mark and Cam with the jackpot Yellow of the day, and once again (WHAT DO FISH LOOK LIKE?)
We are going to take a stab offshore in the morning and then it's Homeward Bound.

GOOD NIGHT AND HAPPY 4TH OF JULY,

CAN'T BLAME IT ON THE WEATHER

We went the distance and took the outside route in hopes of finding something good and I would love to say there is a new area - however the fish need to be up in order to find them.
Today Fred Miyazaki caught the only fish for us and talking to our other code boats, sounds like things are down today in this neck of the woods.
We are going to fish shallow waters tomorrow and hope for better luck.

GOOD NIGHT,

1.5 day trip home with a nice catch of white bottom meat for 4th of July gatherings, a dozen yellows and one lucky guy (Bryan) gets to share his bluefin for the holiday. Either way, they'll all be popular at their prospective block parties...thanks everyone!

Plain Old Fishin

We began our trip on the coast so there would be an opportunity for all to wet a line and catch a few fish. That ended up working well and everyone will be coming home with some fish to share with family and Friends for the holiday weekend.
We then began our offshore hunt hitting numerous dry kelps, but lucky for us, around lunchtime we found a kelp that was holding a few yellows.
There was fast action for a few minutes and we finished with a dozen mixed sized yellows.
The father and son team of John and Steve Samarin were both lucky enough to be part of the action and they both have the smiles for proof.
Later we arrived in a zone where we saw Plenty of bluefin, but they were in the non-biting mode. Bryan Sherman was the lone ranger lucky enough to come away with a thirty something pound bluefin.
Also in today's photo gallery is Lloyd Cotton with a sample of today's stringer.

Bob Hara and his gang came home from his day and a half charter with 19 Bluefin. There was incredible sign of fish, and the ones they caught are primo quality -these fish are beautiful and things could get interesting here in the near future.
A huge thanks to Bob for all the time he puts into putting his charter together for Curtis Rosenthal. It is much appreciated and we get to meet a lot of nice new people on his trip every year.
Check out the pic with a peek at a few of the guys with their catch of the day....including Matt Salas - who always generously donates iron.

WE USED A BUNCH OF STAPLES TODAY

We took a break from the all day driving around grind and had a wonderful day of yellowtail fishing. The weather was flat and the fish were hitting. Most commonly asked question is "what do fish look like on the meter?" The photo of the day takes care of that. We are heading back up the line and going into Christopher Columbus Mode, hope we find Em.....

So if you like fishng with a light load and just a few of your friends-to-be.....give Lori a call in the office - there are multiple opportunities in five day range.

DIFFERENT DAY!!!

Well Mama told me I'd have days like this
Yesterday this fish wanted to bite a little bit, but today they wanted no part of it. There is still a good sign of these Bluefin - all sizes - but the Fleet had a hard time catching any. We had a couple handfuls of the 12 to 14lb Bluefin for the day (just to say we didn't get skunked) but let's just say we had our sites set much higher. The weather is still gorgeous and we are going to fish the shallows tomorrow to give the offshore scene a break.

GOOD NIGHT,

The AA Gang

Wed. June 22, 2011

IT'S GOOD TO BE LUCKY

Today we owe all the credit to our crew, and I mean 100%, for putting us on fish - today without a doubt was straight Eye Ball fishing. I am so proud of this crew's passion, we are so fortunate to have them working on the American Angler. These guys are Fisherman.
We ended the day with 61 30-50lb bft with a few stand outs like Rob pictured here and the assist goes to Jack for passing the Shaker around.
We are going to take a stab at the offshore gig in the morning and just go from there, hoping our luck sticks for the next few days.

GOOD NIGHT AND THE GANG IS HAVING FUN,

REPORT FROM THE AFT STEERING CONTROL CENTER, (THE SHAKERZONE)

Today's photo is every anglers dream.... being able to have their own command center on deck, I don't think we are going to let Barry drive the boat tomorrow - sorrry.
The weather is very nice and the forecast is looking good for the near future, so with a little luck we can get things started in the morning.
The Shaker Gang are in good spirits and tomorrow it's time to go to work. Over and Out.

Nice Weather

Today we traveled up the line in beautiful weather feeling blessed for the good fortunes that we experienced this trip.
One of the most important factors to a successful trip is the camaraderie and friendships that are developed during the voyage and on this one there were plenty.
Dan Kadota was a great liason for a good time and we all would like to thank Blackrock Tackle"Old School Fishin Stiks", Zuker Trolling Lures, Tady Lures, and Gamakatsu Hooks for their generous donations on this trip.

GOOD Times.

Sun. June 19, 2011

Enjoy

Because of our lucky timing during this trip, we stayed on the beach and topped off our yellowtail catch. With no apparent sign of premiums we leisurely caught yellows throughout the morning.
The leaders on the homefront for fun has to be the guys that earned the title "Bow Movement". Roy, Larry, Tony, Dave and Scott were having the time of their lives fishing in the bow of the vessel with a loud whoop whoop every time a fish was hooked.

A Good Time Was Had By All,

The Guys

Sat. June 18, 2011

Relax

We entertained ourselves this morning with some decent yellowtail fishing and then dedicated the afternoon to finding the "premium" grade fish. We made the full tour for no sign as we are sure that they are around just not where we looked.
Due to choppy weather and very little offshore sign, we are going to enjoy the beach for one more day.

Having Fun,

The Guys

Fri. June 17, 2011

Sentimental

The guys downstairs really got to talking today about the handful of regulars (Jimal,S.K.,Chappy and others) that could not make the trip this year. Everybody's having a great time but still wishing that you guys were here.
We were lucky enough to stumble on the yellows that seemed to be M.I.A. for a few days and had some really fun fishing today. The bow crew was busy winding their yo yo jigs, the stern guys were doing their thing flylining and the down wind plugging crew were busy giggling to themselves watching yellows eating their surface lure.

Feeling Fortunate,

The Guys

Bliss

Good weather, right place at the right time, lucky stops and daily limits of bluefin tuna pretty much sums up the perfect day of sportfishing.

Lined Up

Today was a day that all avid offshore anglers can only dream about.
Reasonably calm weather, full moon, a diligent crew with bino's plastered to their face all day and bluefin tuna willing to bite is a combination that cannot be beat. That is what we enjoyed today as we had great action to the tune of 119 fish that averaged 25-35lbs with a few standout 50lbers.
On deck it all seemed to come around easy but those in the know realize that it is not. Our dedicated crew conquered the morning's chill with gloves and they had the last laugh putting us on numerous batches of biting fish.
Joe Skinner is pictured with his new outfit from Kens Custom Reels as his face describes the fun had by all.

Living The Dream,

The Guys

Tues. June 14, 2011

Starting Off With A Bang

We didn't arrive to the bluefin zone until early afternoon, so as one could imagine anticipation was at an all time high. After a short stop for a handful of fish, we arrived in a nectar spot that just felt right. After a short time there was a call from the mast indicating the presence of a good school of fish. When we finally caught up to them they responded with a vengeance and by the time we got down on deck every rod was bit.
With 26 fish hooked at once, one can only imagine the three and four way tangles as the fish were almost biting too good. Everyone remained calm as we salvaged just about everything and ended up our first afternoon with 71 fish.

We All Became Accustomed With One Another In A Hurry,

The Guys
And on that final note - we just had 2 cancellations on next Tuesday, June 21, five day.

Mon. June 13, 2011

Catchy Tackle Is Home

REPORT FROM THE BRIDGE

We had classic bluefin tuna fishing today, with the initial quick go around with fish on the corner and up to a dozen fish going at once and then it backed down to the plunkin bite.
We ended the day with 103 bluefin tuna (25 - 35lbs with some bigger standouts) and everyone is excited to get home and enjoy bluefin tuna sashimi and seared tuna.

After a bouncy ride up the line, when we had the beach in sight, the weather laid down and we had a little action on decent grade yellowtail. As we move up the line, we're pacing ourselves for hopeful bluefin tuna fishing on our last full day of fishing tomorrow.
We had plenty of bites on the catchy tackle yo yo jigs as we all enjoyed a better day of weather.

Mon. June 6, 2011

REPORT FROM THE BRIDGE

We started fishing today and covered different areas - some devoid of life and some full of life, but finally found a nice ball of fish which responded to the bait. They showed and stayed with the bait better than they bit, but we were able to hook a few. We caught 25-35lb Bluefin Tuna with a % of bigger ones and boated one approx. 60lbs. We lost some due to albacore-type gear & weather, but when it was all said and done we had 12 bluefin tuna and one token albacore.
This gets us excited and encouraged for the upcoming season.

The AA Gang
We have a 6/30 day and a half trip and a 7/18 two and a half day trip for those of you who can't get away for a 5 day trip - it's a great way to experience long range fishing on board the American Angler for only a couple of days....

THINGS DON'T COME EASY SOMETIMES

Well after finally getting located yesterday, I thought today's pace would be upbeat, but still the group had to work for every fish, and if I may make a comment - the grade of this fish is awesome.
We had a couple of standouts and took some time to have ourselves a little Calico Catch & Release party today as well.
We are going to move up tonight and start the journey home and as of right now, this is the best weather of the trip, but I'm not counting my chickens yet.

GOOD NIGHT TO ALL,

GOT ON 'EM LATE

We had a very long day looking for some action today, checking out all of our Yellowtail spots with Gold Stars next to them, only finding cold water, cold, dirty water or cold, dirty, smuttsy water.
Sometime in the late afternoon we found the right conditions; warmer clean blue water and can you believe it... fish. We are going to go out on a limb and hope conditions stay the same here and go to work a little earlier in the day tomorrow.
The photo of the day is Ms. Tammie and her personal Capt. Taro with a sample of the grade fish we enjoyed today.
We have another day to fish the shallows before we make the run offshore (weather permitting).

GOOD NIGHT,

The latest news about Guadalupe is that we have access. This involves a few steps, including check in and check out at Ensenada and clearing of US Customs in San Diego. This means we need 100% compliance of US passports in order for this to be an option. For those of you that do not have a passport yet, we apologize for the inconvenience, but it seems in today's security sensitive environment, having a passport is becoming inevitable.
Having a passport, does not however mean that all trips will be going to Guadalupe, but that we have the opportunity to visit the island if everyone has a passport in their possession.
There are a lot of variables that we'll have to contend with, but no matter our destination, we should all feel priveleged to have the right to fish in Mexican waters.
As with all our trips in the past, the destination will be determined by the location of the best fishing conditions when your trip leaves, in hopes of providing a wonderful trip.
Please don't hesitate to call the office or email with any questions regarding the necessity of or obtaining your US passport.

Click on these official links and get started today if you don't already have your passport.... according to the passport site, the time frame for receiving your passport is 4 - 6wks.

TIME TO GO!

The handwriting was on the wall today: the conditons were poor (meaning current), no sign of Tuna and with the one anchor job we did manage to catch a handful of Yellows, but decided the place just wasn't Right.
We are heading into the beach and will have some time to do some looking and put the rest of this trip together. The weather seems to be subsiding today, which is making for a peaceful ride.

GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK,

HANGING TOUGH

The weather overall was a notch better, but still not good - even so,the gang has done a great job dealing with the elements the last couple of days to put some fish in the hatch.
The fishing was down from yesterday - 47 yellows and 5 Tuna. However, we did get a few bigger ones like Harold's on the kite today... so there is still sign of fish around, you just have to be here on the right day.

GOOD NIGHT,

IT'S GOOD TO BE FISHING

We arrived at our destination just before lunchtime today, after a nice ride down and I say "nice ride down" because if we had been traveling in the opposite direction, it wouldn't have been so nice. The weather is up for the first chapter of this trip, but looks like it will lay down for the ride home.
O.K. enough weather dope.
We had very good fishing today - mostly Yellowtail, but with just enough Tuna to keep the gang at the rail all afternoon.
We are still trying to get a feel for this place and are looking forward to being here at daylight, which can be important at times, and hope to scratch at the Tuna a little better tomorrow.
The photos of the day: Dennis and Mr. Planet.

Are We There Yet???

It has been apparent that all of you out there in the internet fishing world are having a tough time with no Hot Dope from any wheelhouse of our Long Range boats recently. Just keeping it real here... whatever happened last year, I can guarantee you this season will be different! All of us from the American Angler crew are spazzing out to go fishing on the first trip of the Spring season leaving on May 14th, so just hang on another week and the world wide web will be on Fire. To all the AA Gang coming fishing this year, expect to see the same faces on deck with our crew and in the Galley Greg will be assisted with our new permanent fixture, Whitney AKA Ginger - and new to our galley, Army Ranger-do-it-all, Paul Merrill. In a nut shell, the best crew in the Fleet.
This week we had our annual Coast Guard inspection to get signed off for the year and the inspection was flawless with not one (Zero) discrepancies!!! Yes, That Just Happened. I can't even put into words how Pumped the AA team is to get this Party Started and looking forward to seeing all of you.

Let's Do It,

We are wrapping up another Avet sponsered 14 day where the great fishing and weather was once again secondary. We had a majority of regulars (we missed some of our others and hope to see you guys next year) and our sponser Ben Frazier - which equivilates great continuity on deck. As always, Ben was very generous with many giveaways including 5 Avet reels, one of them won by pictured Bill Randall, for placing high in one of the trip's cribbage tournaments - cribbage champ, Ben Frazier, passed it on.
Other generous contributers were Jerry Brown Line One Spectra and Salas Lures (the flourescent orange crush salas 6x jr.was one of the Hot Wahoo Jigs of the trip) who always seem to have no problem going above and beyond.

Enjoyable

We woke up again to absolute beautiful conditions both weather and fishing wise. We took advantage and had an action filled morning on tuna which included an unbelievable third cow for John Metcalf and a second one for Bob Wheeler. We were totally blessed with these great conditions all trip and capitalized with a wonderful catch. We had both great wahoo and tuna fishing all trip and we are headed up the line a day early so for those of you that have friends or loved ones aboard expect us to be at the dock on Tuesday mid morning and for the exact eta call Lori on Monday. We are trying to figure out how to transfer some H Bank wahoo video to pictures but this is one example in today's shot.
There will be one more report in the next couple of days - -so we will see you then.

Spoiled

We have truly become spoiled this trip, but nothing is being taken for granted. We have been blessed with nice weather and overall good fishing conditions which add up to a great day. We started up just before daylight when we hooked our first fish and it lasted until after dark when we boated our last fish. There were slow times throughout the day but there were also some pretty good rallies to be had. Most of the fish brought aboard were 120-190lbs with Doc Metcalf doing his magic again with a 237lb fish.
The greatest victory of the day was Glenn Bummer with his all time best 287lber that he caught after an epic battle (Martha you are in all of our thoughts and you would have been proud).

Slow Start

We woke up to another incredible day on the water. A beautiful sunrise, clear skies, very little wind and a flat calm ocean. The only thing that could put a damper on a fishing day like this is not getting bites. We spent the better part of the morning seeing a few fish and only getting two bites.... Granted that one of the bites turned into a personal best for John Metcalf (he did a great job on a 269lb fish) and then we could only last so long trying to wait out this batch of fish .
We went looking for something fresh and as with most good things it wasn't easy but when we got located it was well worth it. We had great fishing in the afternoon where there were plenty of chances at getting a good one. Our smallest fish of the day was a 115lb fish with the majority of the tuna weighing at least a buck and a half.
Paul "Planet" Yarnold also was fortunate enough to land a 250lber which as it turns out is also his personal best. Not pictured is Charlie Iwashita and Bobby Gene Gott who also got into this trip's big fish club with each of them landing a low two.

One Good Deed Deserves Another

We started out the morning hooking one nice fish in the dark which gave us high hopes for the bewitching daylight hour. Right around breakfast time a few fish rolled by and we were able to hook a handful before they kept going. Bob Wheeler (retired NYFD) was one of the guys that got bit and thankfully he was ahead of the game by using a big hook and 130lb line because if he had been using lighter gear, we probably would have lost the fish for sure. He hooked the fish straight up and down and within what seemed like seconds, his spool was emptied and we had to throw his 50 sized reel in the water attached to a backup.
Luckily, two hours later after a grueling battle, Bob managed to bring up a beautiful 257lb yellowfin tuna.
We ended up the day scratching at 70-110lb fish as all but one of our guys landed a nice tuna today.

Tough Neighborhood

Today it took us awhile to get situated in the right zone as we all know that first priority is being where the fish are. We found good conditions and then shortly after that we started hooking fish. We began landing a few 50-70lb fish but also saw decent signs of better fish. It took some time but we finally started hooking those bigger fish and there were a few times when we had 3-4 hooked at once. Unfortunately the sharks found our zip code and made it impossible to land anythingh over 100lbs.
We scratched wahoo and a few mid grade tuna and tomorrow we're looking for a shot at those better fish.... with no sharks.

Hoping For A Chance,

The Guys

finally fishing!

As we arrived on the grounds early morning, we instantly saw good sign of fish in the dark and just when we thought we had the current all dialed in, as luck would have it - things changed. We finally got situated about a half hour before daylight and for the first five minutes it was game on, we thought we were on our way. We had several fish hooked including Steve Leonheart's 158 that Kamikazed under the lights - which took about four turns of the handle til it was landed. Unfortunately for us as fast as things got going, they came to an abrupt halt when the small tuna and miscellaneous junk got on us and made it un-fishable.

After daylight we got going and were all fortunate to experience the classic fast and furious wahoo fishing that involved lots of bite offs and Ariel stunts. For those of you at home watching and are planning on a wahoo dinner - now would be a good time to start researching a few quality recipe as you will not be disappointed!

Accurate Guys Back

The boat returned 7:30am with a gorgeous load of Yellowfin tuna; everyone on the boat was lucky enough to catch one over 100lbs and there were 4 over 200lbers to feed their own families and next of kin for a while... A big thanks to hardworking Gary Teraoka who made sure everyone got a chance to use the Accurate loaner gear and was happy to help anyone that wanted to try his Nub Connection.
Along with our regular passengers on this trip, we had a nice jag of new anglers on this trip, including a great new group of fishermen from Washington/Oregon who decided to give this style fishing a try and we're glad they did! To everyone on the trip, thank you so much and we look forward to next year!

Check out jackpot winners below (along with rep Gary) and Joe Machado's whole family was there to greet him - pictured are his lovely ladies, his mom and wife Kim and Jed.

Whatever It Takes

We are arriving to the dock tomorrow from another successful trip. What we mean by that is that yes we caught fish - but more importantly all the passengers got along extremely well. In addition to our group of every year regulars, we had a nice mix of guys from the Pacific Northwest (these guys are hardcore fishermen) and other various parts of California.
They took shape as one unit and because of the great communication on deck with one another, we were able to put a solid catch of beautiful grade yellowfin tuna aboard, highlighted by 4 fish over two hundred pounds.
Everybody aboard landed a fish in excess of 100 lbs which on a 10.5 day trip, the success speaks for itself.
This trip is sponsored every year by Accurate Reels and being the professional top notch business that they are, one can only imagine the great benefits that go along with the trip. There are 40 loaner accurate reels and top of the line rod combinations available for anyone's use that wishes to give them a test drive. Other important contributers are Calstar Rods who donate the use of many of the latest in tuna rod technology. Also, Izorline International donated spectra and flourocarbon and Baja Fish Gear was generous enough to supply gift cards for all of our anglers.
Bill Roecker of Oceanic Productions, Fishworks Proven Products, Salas Lures and all of our three fish processors - Mario, Five Star and Fisherman's Processing, were kind enough to sweeten the deal with various goodies.
Lastly, Accurate Reels was proudly represented by Gary Teraoka. Gary is the innovator of the Engineered Nub Connection that involves the use of nail knots and when properly done has proven itself to be one of the smoothest, cleanest, and strongest connections out there and he is always happy to share his knowledge.

Looking Forward To Seeing These Guys Next Year,

The Guys

Finishing Up

We spent our last available morning scratching away at 90-175lb fish. It was never wide open, but we were able to always keep at least one fish hooked. At all times there was a chance at hooking a fish of a lifetime because they were making their presence known by showing themselves and getting airborne on a regular basis.
Mark Johnson was our lucky angler to be in the right place at the right time and hooked a big fish.
As we all know it helps to be lucky, but it is also very important to be using the right gear. Being that it was blowing a steady 15kts and the boat was bouncing around, it was really nice that he hooked the big fish of the trip on a 50 sized reel and 130lb line.
Because of the beefier tackle, when Mark got the fish straight up and down (even though the boat was jerking around ),he was able to put the right amount of pressure on and landed our jackpot fish of the trip which weighed 287lbs.
We have one more web report on the way - as we are looking for a clear family portrait.

Rolling Up,

Wasn't Easy

Today we woke up with caddy wompas conditions as the current was going up into the wind which made for tough fishing conditions. We ended up in a zone where we enjoyed a pick on 90-160lb fish and it seemed that the guys that had yet to catch a hundred pound fish were lucky enough to do so today.. Joe Machado from our Everingham Bait Company {who are critical to the success of our San Diego Sportfishing fleet} was today's big fish man.
He had a big fish boil on his bait and was lucky to be equipped with the right gear. Hundred pound on an Accurate ATD 30 was his weapon of choice and that rig went swimming out on backup twice throughout the battle and still worked like a charm.
After the sun went down, the entire boat watched the show and an hour into dark Joe finally bested a whopping 247lb fish.

If It Was Easy Everyone Would Be Doing It,

The Guys

Perfect

After the first day of selective type big fish fishing we needed some chaos and pandemonium.
We were lucky enough to have crazy action where there was all kinds of things going on at once like multiple fish hooked at the same time, the cry of gaff in the bow, the ever present tangles and all the other factors that puts our excitement level into overdrive, as we managed to put a nice day together.
We had lots of fish in the 150-180lb class along with some respectable sized 60lb filler fish.
Top fish of the day was a 210lb fish landed by Jeff Norwood who is part of a group of fishing diehards from our Pacific Northwest.

Happy Because Everyone Has A Few Fish,

Working

We arrived at the tuna grounds this morning and found things a little different than they had been. There was less sign of fish and what was around the boat, was not quite as eager as they have been in the past. We went looking around and found an area of life that had a nicer grade of fish. In the afternoon we scratched at 130-180lb fish, topped off by John Yarbrough's 206lb trophy.
Despite pulling hooks, we ended up with a decent catch of nice fish and most of our guys had a shot at getting a good one.

Looking For A Good Hit,

The Guys

Calstar home

The boat returned 7:30am with nice grade tuna - mostly 75 - 150lbers with a couple larger models rounding out the catch. This was a nice crowd that had some time to get to know each other and who worked well together on deck.
They maximized their fishing time and then most had a chance to maybe read a novel or see that movie they hadn't had time to see at home,
A huge thanks to Glenn Kuromi and everyone who came fishing with us on this trip!

Jackpot winner:
First place : Joe Gigliotti 239 lbs YFT
Second place: Bill Hennigh 186 lbs YFT
Third place: Chris Cruger 161.0lbs YFT

Once again the Long run paid off for us and today we had very good action on 80 to 130lb fish, pretty much all throughout the day and in addition to the good fishing, the weather gods are definitely looking after us as well.
We have a couple more days to spend before we begin our journey home, so of course we hope to keep the ball rolling.
