Tasty

We had nice traveling weather so we made a short stop for the dinner table. Cindy Weaver displays a very nice example of tomorrow night's table fare.

8 rockcod fillets
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
flour
breadcrumbs
extra virgin olive oil
First flour rockcod fillets, then dip in egg batter/milk combination, and coat with breadcrumbs. Fry to a crisp golden brown.

1 whole scaled and cleaned 3 lb rockcod
3 tbsp chinese black bean
2 tbsp salted turnip
1 tbsp shredded ginger
5 stalks of green onion
3 tbsp peanut oil

Score fish, add salt and pepper to taste. Place fish in pan that will fit steamer. Soak black bean and turnips in water for fifteen minutes. Drain water and smash black beans to paste. Spread paste on outside and inside of fish. Shred turnip, ginger, and chopped green onions and then spread over fish. Cover fish with foil and steam until done - usually half an hour to forty minutes. Heat peanut oil and pour over cooked fish before serving. Serve over hot rice.

A PLEASANT SURPRISE

After a night of rain squalls packing 25 to 35 knots with no visibility, radar washout, and torrential downpours, we did not know what to expect at daylight. The wind switched from the south to the west and had us worried whether or not our chosen yellowtail area would be fishable. As it turned out, throughout the morning the wind diminished and we were able to pick at beautiful grade yellowtail. The yellowtail were biting the yoyo jig best and the hard work rewarded us with a nice catch for the day.

TRAVELING UP AND ENJOYING THE WEATHER,

Sun., Dec. 5, 04

Altitude

Rain, southeast wind, squalls, high sea conditions, and unstable weather was probably today's main topic amongst the fleet. Last night when we left the tuna zone, we found ourselves a long way from home and with uncertain weather conditions forecasted, one of our goals beside fishing was to cover some ground.
We were somehow blessed with unbelievable weather [look in the background of today's picture of Ed Royles and a wahoo] and even though fishing was on the slower side, our travels put us in prime position for tomorrow's fishing day.

Sat., Dec. 4, 04

WHY?

We started out on one of the lower shallows and didn't like the sign that we saw. We followed the birds and they led us to a very fishy looking area of twenty to forty pounders that for some reason wouldn't bite. We had fish laying under and downwind of the boat the whole time we were stopped and we would struggle to keep one going. Any other time, one would look at the machines and think that when he looked outside everybody would have one on, but that was not the case. We then left the area in search of biting fish and came upon a zone of terns and sheerwaters, whales, bait and scattered sign of big fish blowing out. We got on several nice bunches of big fish that for some reason unbeknownst to man, would not bite.
We did our best finding them, but cannot control all variables and wish we had more anglers with arms as tired as Billy Chow's.

Gettin Em

The arrival at our destination coincided with a beautiful sunrise as we were once again blessed with beautiful weather. When we made our first pass over where we thought the tuna may be, we were happy to see that they were there. Our first chumline resulted in boiling fish, as we immediately started hooking fish. From daylight to dark we enjoyed fast and furious action on nice school grade fish. Our english teachers would be disgraced with today's title, but that's the best description we can come up with.
Smiles were prevelent as shown by John Wong and Andy Pulido in one picture and Dave Boes in another.

Hoping

Everytime the boat stopped, when looking up the rail, one could see arms cocked, thumbs on spools, and the anticipation on each and every angler's face. As we continued on our search for wahoo kelps, we got several small tastes that led up to the one we were looking for. For a short while, our anglers had no problem getting bites. Weeding through the frisky dorado and keeping the wahoo hooked was not an easy chore, however when the smoke cleared, there were plenty of happy faces.
Tomorrow we are going to try our luck at tuna, in hopes that the recently stingy ocean will deal us a good hand.

Can't Have It All

We are on this ten day fishing adventure to enjoy ourselves by getting away from our cell phones ,work-related stress and other high demands that come from everyday life. A big part of these trips is relaxing and having the opportunity to catch a few fish. Although we struggled today in the fish department, we were finally blessed with a day of beautiful weather. We used this weather to our advantage and were able to capture a couple three handfuls of nice Wahoo and quality Dorado.
Our lucky angler of the day is Jim Bailey, who not only caught a nice Wahoo, but also got to enjoy his birthday by doing something he loves.
Hopefully tomorrow we will enjoy beautiful weather with the addition of a little more fishing action.

Lets Fish

After looking forward for a whole year to go fishing, the first couple of travel days can be very tough. All morning, we were very concerned about the rough weather but it seemed like every fisherman was just concerned about fishing.
Lucky for us, the weather started to come down just about the same time we started fishing. Although the fishing was not gangbusters, it was nice to get the lines wet and put a few fish aboard.
Sunset found us on the move again, poised to pounce on greener pastures come morning. Today's picture features a sample of one of todays yellowtail along with happy angler, Bruce Inniss, who would like to give his best to Torrey.

After spending most of the morning traveling up into the shallow water, we finally found what we had hoped to find. The first sonar school was as good as Yellowtail fishing gets. Then we managed to find a couple more schools that wanted to play as well. The photo of the day is the whole gang with big smiles on their faces.

FINALLY A LITTLE JUSTICE

We are very lucky once again this season to have an opportunity to catch such a nice grade of fish. The ingredients for fishing the last few days has been patience and luck and while most of the spots of fish we stopped on, didn't bite - a few did. We ended the day with 15 fish ranging from 120 to 180 lbs. On any long trip that would be considered a good day, because we all know it can get a lot slower than that, when fishing for big Tuna.
The photo of the day is Eugene Wong with his 180.5 lb Tuna; a well-deserved fish.
We have high hopes that the weather man doesn't rain on our parade for the journey homeward.

FRUSTRATION

In the last few days we have been saying..."well, maybe tomorrow". There is no doubt that good times are to be had by all here on any day. The opportunity for a big day is here, all we need is for the fish to get with it. Every day we had a few shots at these beautiful, Trophy-size fish and as we go to bed tonight, we'll be saying it again..."maybe tomorrow".
The photo of the day is Glenn Bummer standing with his fish of a lifetime that weighed in just at 200 lbs.

FISH TEASE!

After having a fair afternoon yesterday, we thought today would be our day. The first stop of the day it seemed like it was going to be that day - after numerous attempts at several spots, however, it turned into a very long day. The quality of fish is great; out of the 5 fish that we landed, 4 of them were over 100 lbs.
The photo of the day is John West with his 114 lb Tuna. The weather is just epic, so we got that going for us.

There were also 15 Yellowfin Tuna caught that were over 100lbs and a variety of fish to go along with those Tuna including Wahoo, Yellowtail, White Seabass and Dorado.

Irony

When we left the dock, we were looking forward to hopefully getting in on some wahoo action. The sign of tuna was very poor and the only fish seen either were not biting or on the smaller side. Here we are 10 days later, rolling up the line with a couple two hundred pounders, several one hundred pounders, and lots of other nice grade "filler" fish aboard.
It's amazing how fast this ocean changes. We are thankful for the good group of anglers put together by Luc Olfield of Anglers Choice - who made the task of looking for fish much easier due to their understanding of the ocean and fishing conditions.

Quality

After having that giant day on cows, what kind of fishing can compare? The answer is none - but we think we came pretty close. The weather has been kind of choppy, so we headed into the mexican coastline in search of some nice fish. Once again - like the whole trip - we had to search them out. When we found them, we enjoyed steady action on nice yellows and even a few bonus seabass. In order to grasp the quality of the fish, one has to closely examine today's photos. The two seabass were landed by Uncle Bill and Paul Medina and part of today's yellowtail catch is displayed by the AA crew.

The Day Of All Days

We spent several days of our trip driving around the ocean in search of good fish. It finally paid off in a giant [literally] way. We discovered an area of fish that was all birded up and when we threw bait, we quickly discovered that our search had ended. We let them have it with the bait and they reacted instantly as there were fish from 100-275lbs flying through the air for a show of a lifetime. Even though this was a mid-range trip, this rivals any show that we've ever seen on a long trip. We were fortunate enough to boat two fish well over two hundred and at least 15 over one hundred pounds. For those of you that have fished for these cows - you know that in order to acheive these numbers, fishing had to be incredible as we sure suffered our share of losses.
The chances of getting that fish of a lifetime is definitely a reality as this seems like it is only a peek into what's going to be available the next few months. This proves that sometimes when you go looking - it can pay off in a BIG WAY...

Justice

We have been getting a little taste of action every day, but that's been it .... just a little. Today was a little different as we went on a road trip looking for fish and ended up driving around all day. In the bottom of the ninth, we got on a dab of tuna that really wanted to go. We ended up with good action on a nice school grade of fish, but had little signal on the goods.
Rob Whitney hooked a big one, unfortunately the gear was a little light. Although the cards were stacked against him, he was still able to get it close enough for a visual identification before it got off. We will let Rob tell the story of how big it was, because fish stories are a good thing.
Our daily photo is Rob fighting his fish under the tutelage of Capt. Sam.

Again

We arrived at our destination right after daylight and we were rewarded with good bird sign and decent sign of tuna fish on the meter. After we looked around for awhile, we were lined up to drop the anchor when we saw a pretty good school of fish on the machines. To our delight they responded immediately, and it was fast and furious fishing on 18-40lb fish - they were biting right away. After the first go around we put the anchor down and picked steady for the next couple of hours. We had several nice fish boil around, as Steve Mellentin proved in today's picture; assisted by our Capt. Sam Patella, the fish was very close to acheiving the 100lb mark. Unfortunately as the day progressed, the fishing slowed way down as once again it is forcing us to look for greener pastures.

Fri., Nov. 5, 04

Tease

Yesterday, we thought we were off to a great start and that fizzled out when we never found another kelp. Today we got off to a slow start with the only action to be had on small tuna - most of which we released.
Due to our passengers being sportsmen, we went looking for bigger and better things. Luckily, due to our diligent crew, we were able to find a fairly large area of big tuna. The first spot we slid on, we had them boiling on the stern as we hooked about ten fish and they were very eager. We ended up landing 5 fish from 85-116lbs, the biggest of which was landed by Uncle Bill.
As we were fighting these fish, we could see several spots of big fish but unfortunately we spent the next four hours throwing a bunch of bait with limited results. On one stop, we had a few 175lb fish blow out on our chum and on another stop we finally hooked one - only to lose this precious fish at color.
We had to leave this area because the amount of bait-to-catch ratio, was not in our favor. Tommorow the search continues for a productive area to call home.

Sign

After daylight this morning we were still in travel mode when we happened on a nice kelp. Unable to resist temptation, we drove over and looked at it and were pleasantly surprised when the Wahoo we saw on the machines started to bite the lures. After our first go around, there were several fish laying on the deck waiting to be tagged as the first stop of the trip was a busy one. Once the initial wahoo hit ended, we were able to plunk at some nice grade tuna that averaged between 20-40 lbs.
After this great start, our fearless leader then proceeded to drive around a desert where there was absolutely no sign of bush and that directly correlated to no fish.
On the bright side, there was good sign of life as we saw lots of Marlin Tailors and jumping Dorado - which gives off the feeling of confidence for the next time we see something floating.

The End

When it comes to being away from your family, 10 days seems like a long time, but when it comes to fishing - time sure flies. We had excellent wahoo fishing during the first part of the trip and in order to remember it, we broke out a few of the lures for tonight's picture.
Today we finished the trip fishing Yellowtail and ended up getting into wide open action on 18-25lb fish biting so good that the corner was reminiscent of this year's albacore action.
A good time was had by all and tommorow is going to be spent relaxing the arms[sore from all that cranking] and catching up on rest so we will all be able to face reality.
Once again this year's group had its nucleus of regulars, but as always we had our new faces that were readily welcomed to the family.
Special thanks to Brad Lemoine for always putting on a great trip with Sport Chalet and look for the articles to be published by Steve Carson who also was very generous with goodies for all.

GOOD WEATHER CALLS FOR GOOD TIMES

Whether it's fishing or traveling when the ocean is flat and the wind is nil, it makes for a better time. We fished on the anchor today and had good action all morning before we pulled the anchor after lunch to head up the line. Bob Clark landed the biggest tuna of the trip and Bobby Cass (who wishes his father a happy birthday) caught the smallest Wahoo of the trip; as you can tell by the smiles, everybody had a good time no matter what they caught.

Fall Fishing

Today our search took us offshore in search of flotsam. While Mother Nature dealt us less than ideal conditions, the perseverance of the crew paid off with steady stops on various pieces of debris. True to their nature, the Dorado were voracious, and this coupled with their impressive size kept our anglers on their toes stop after stop. In addition, and again through perseverance, we hooked and landed several more Wahoo making this an action packed day of fall fishing.
Once again, joining the crew family is new owner of the sportfisher Islander and older brother of Chef Mitch, John Conniff. Also with us is close cousin of Sam, Captain Frank Patella, who is not only a seasoned veteran, but also a great admirer of Chef Mitch's culinary talents(see picture).

A WORLD APART

With reports of 25 knots of southeast wind and buckets of rain back home, it's hard to believe that 76 degree flat calm water, sunblock and farmer tans are what we have to contend with. Short bites, bite offs, hack jobs, and fleet-footed races across the deck defined today's classic stop and go wahoo fishing. A new grade of fish moved into the area as not only did we catch good numbers, but we also had quality fish up to 95 lbs. To add to the mix during one of our stops, we were graced by the golden gift of the sea: dorado. Within seconds our party quickly turned into a riot. During a break in the action, Art Yoshida and ace Keith Hilton hoisted this fine specimen of a grouper for our photo of the day.

The Package

When one books a long-range ten day trip, the various species available are definitely a major selling point. We had very choppy weather last night and when the sun came up it was no better. We were lucky enough to be in a spot where we hooked lots of big grouper with mixed results using skipjack and tuna for bait. As the day progressed, the weather got better and in our travels we were fortunate enough to collect lots of wahoo for the barbacue - when we all get home. Delusional?

Delusions of grandeur happen to all fishermen from one time to another. We felt that even though a lot of the spots would be covered, we could overcome that hurdle by looking for fish offshore. It was mid-morning when we arrived in warm water, and right away we started seeing signs of fish. One of the first stops, started out with smaller Dorado and Tuna, but since it was early in the game, we confidently let them all go.
We knew that if we found something good floating that it would be game on, but we only had one small problem. We drove around all day and found absolutely nothing.
We boated the first Wahoo of the trip in the afternoon and it was manhandled by John Hennessy who not only is very happy, but would like to wish his beautiful daughter Eileen a happy birthday.

THE LAST SUPPER

Today was the last day of traveling for the M&M Gang - there was movie watching, book reading and just about anything that related to relaxing. That was the theme today.
This was a really great trip, with all things considered - we saw good fishing and there were times when it was pretty darn slow, but all in all it worked out in the end.
The photo of the day is our sponsor Monte Parsons enjoying a little Prime Rib before he calls it a night, because tomorrow he has to go back to work and finish building all you guys out there in Internet land your Rods.

We would like to say Thank You to all of the M&M Gang for being a part of this 10 day adventure and a Special Thanks to Monte for putting this trip together in his busy schedule.

TIME TO HEAD NORTH

We are going to pull our anchor and run up the line - the last two days were just what we needed to complete this trip. We enjoyed very good fishing on this nice grade Tuna; fish ranging in size from 40 to 95 lbs rounded it out.
Today's photo is the whole M&M gang after a long day at the rail.

ANOTHER DAY OF FUN IN THE SUN

We had another great day of weather and the fishing was fun, as well. We managed to pick at some more of those Skinnys with steady action on quality Tuna. Today's photo is Mr. John Ortiz with a peek of the Tuna that we enjoyed today. We have one more day down here, then it's time to run to the Northwest.

THINGS WENT AS PLANNED

Today was the Offshore Mission and we ended up finding what we wanted. First of all, the weather was great which made our job a lot easier finding those sometimes hard-to-see Kelp Patties. This kept us busy most of the day going from one kelp to another. We had some very nice Dorado and a few Wahoo mixed in - just to keep us on the edge.
The photo of the day is Terry Curley with one of his Bulls he caught on the Rubber.

THINGS WILL GET BETTER

After fair pickins at the nice Tuna yesterday, it was a bonanza compared to today's experience, and by early afternoon we had had enough. We did manage to land a handful of Yelllowfin and a couple of Wahoo for our efforts, but with all due respects - it was very slow fishing.
The photo of the day is a shot of the beautiful weather we are enjoying, so spirits are high and we have a lot of time left to put it all together.

We arrived midmorning down here in the hot Tuna/Wahoo zone, and we did manage to pick a few Skinnys and some of the nicer Yellowfin Tuna. The photo of the day is Cody Sos holding up one of our Wahoo for the day. The weather is very nice and things are going just fine.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

After having a great evening bite on the Yellows, when daylight rolled around the fish were ready to play again. It was steady action for about three hours and these Yellows were biting just about any way you like to fish for them.
We are on our way, pointing to the South, to continue on with our trip in search of some Tuna fish and just maybe a few Wahoo. All of the M&M Gang had a nice lunch and are down for nap this afternoon while we travel on down the road.

Good Night,

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

We traveled most of the day, but did manage to spend some time at the rail. We were very pleased with our success this afternoon - we enjoyed good action on the Yoyo and a little bit on the surface plug, for Yellows.
The photo of the day is our Uncle Dee Leeman, with one of the fish he bagged today.
We are going to give it a go in the morning and take it from there.

The End

Like all stories, there is a time during the trip called "The End". Sometimes a last day Hail Mary, can turn around what has otherwise been a tough trip. Sometimes it is more like icing on the cake. After three full days of excellent Yellowfin Tuna fishing, we decided to spend the last morning looking for nicer grade Yellowtail. We can hardly think of a better way to end a trip than pulling on 25# to 45# Yellows in calm weather. Today's picture features all of our passengers showing off the morning catch.

All the trips thoughts and prayers going out to Ken Corwin and family, with special thanks and appreciation for putting together a good bunch of guys.

Same Same?

How spoiled are we when we can describe the day as same-same; boiling fish all around the boat throughout the day, as we touch-fished sardines, hoping to hook a 75lb tuna in flat calm weather. Can we ever get tired of this? Today's photo of Don Torres shows everyone the answer to that question.

Steady

We were once again lucky and fortunate to be in the right spot and enjoyed good fishing on 30-80lb yellowfin tuna. If you can picture flat, calm, sunny, fish boiling, bent rods, happy faces and handsome Ray on the bait tank - you would have a good idea of how the day went.

Big

We enjoyed classic island style fishing - it was good fishing, just a little tough to get a bite. Even though we ended up with a big day, they weren't just handing out the bites - everyone had to work extremely hard for them. And like all those who work hard, it was rewarded with the possibility of a big yellow or a 75lb tuna.

Today's photo is Larry Whatley and Mike Bailey showing off the average grade of fish.

A Special Treat

Our limited load group from Kens Custom Reels is pretty much interested in fishing Guadalupe Island.
Most people that have been here think that the only place we fish is the front side for tuna ... but every now and then we poke around and explore the other side. Today it paid off with some yellowtail action, a great break from the travel down and it also produced a handful of trophyies like the one caught by our trusty Ken's employee - Wes Cogan.
Tomorrow the work begins as we are now concentrating on capturing large tuna fish.

ONE OF THOSE DAYS

Well, with the little bit of fish we caught late yesterday and with what has been going on, it was the right move to give it a shot today. It just didn't work out - we saw fair sign of fish into the midmorning, but by lunchtime we saw pretty much nothing. We did manage to catch one Albacore, but that was quite a disappointment, to say the least. We are going to head down and fish the Island tomorrow and enjoy the day.

GOOD NIGHT,

The A.A. Gang

Thurs., Sept 23, 04

MAYBE TOMORROW

We did a little research today, covered some different water that needed to get looked at - just to keep it honest. We did come across some new areas that had a good sign of that smaller Yellowfin Tuna, but that really isn't what we are looking for. After a lot of miles traveled, we stumbled upon what we wanted to find, it was late in the day, but we are banking on it for tomorrow's activities.
The photo of the day is Keith Schlerf with one of his Jumbos. I still can't get over the size of these fish, we had one fish that weighed 48 lbs. (wow)

WHERE DID THEY GO?

Well, we always like to end a trip on a good note, but today it just wasn't our turn. The guys that were on the Albacore grounds before dawn saw a good sign of fish, but it was just one of those days when the fish spend the daylight hours down.
We did manage to catch one lonely Dorado off one of the many kelps we saw today - but on a positive note, the weather was right and the ocean is nice again.
We would like to say a special Thank You to Dick Stokes for putting the Idaho Boys charter together and to all the Idaho Gang for coming out and being a part of this trip.

ANOTHER DAY

Things weren't much different here today, every fish we caught the guys earned. It seems like in the next couple of days, these fish might start acting right again for all of us - they are still around, just not that eager. We ended the day with 24 nice quality Yellowfin - the biggest tipping the scale at 85 lbs, so it was a notch up from yesterdays count.
The photo of the day is Bill Stokes with the 65 lb Tuna he landed with the help of a Tiburon Smart Shift reel - a lot of the fish caught on this trip were on Tiburon gear.
The weather man said it should be backing off tomorrow so we hope he's right, because we have a little offshore duty planned to finish this trip off.

Gratification

When plans and the last piece of the puzzle fall together, not only is it a releif but it is also very self gratifying. We finished up on the albacore grounds and were lucky enough to have flat calm weather and great fishing. Describing the fishing this way is an understatement, considering that the average size of these brutes was 40lbs.
Louis Papai and Bad Fish.com put together a great trip and thanks to plan B, a great time was had by all. Today's picture is Chappie and a bigeye tuna which brings into play the old saying, "the grass is greener on the other side".

Falling Into Place

When one makes plans and they fall into place, it's a pretty good feeling. Plan B consisted of the good yellowtail fishing (that we already experienced) and today's part was to catch a few nice fish and settle up jackpot.
As the day came to a close, we ended up not only matching our expectations, but exceeding them like no one would have imagined. We enjoyed excellent angling on quality fish from the time we got there, until dark.
Our newest member to surpass the hundred pound mark was Paul Zacks and also pictured is "Team Georgia", Scott Mercer and Rick Salasin with another jackpot contender.
The final piece of the puzzle consists of 40lb albacore and tommorow.

Going As Planned

We planned on having a good time today and as the sun went down, it was mission accomplished. We enjoyed steady action on yellowtail with a couple of fish hooked at all times with enough flurries of multiple hookups to keep everyone on their toes. Today's picture is our favorite Alaskan couple, Adam and Michelle Zenger. The unfortunate thing about today was the dismal reports from our next destination, but we are going with the attitude that it can only improve.

Decisions

Every day and minute of one of these long range trips different options and game plans - as far as where to fish - is on the minds of the crew. Our first piece of the puzzle was the big albacore, but by early afternoon it was apparent that plan B would have to come into play. The schools of albacore were definitely around, but getting on a cooperative bunch took lots of good fortune. Some guys had decent days while as many or more had very tough ones. We opted to bail out of the grounds in the afternoon to fish destinations South. We had a sample of these beautiful fish and we definitely have a date planned with them in the near future.

LONG ROD LOVING

Today we fished one of our Yellowtail hotspots on the coast and the gang had just a wonderful time fishing with their Long Rods. There were times today when we would throw a chum line and the Yellows would boil up and 8 to 10 guys would have one on their jig rods. SPONSORS

When one looks at the American Angler schedule and sees various sponsored charters, who are they and what do they mean? Lots of places sell tackle, but few places offer custom rod building and professional advice specified to the saltwater scene.
Bob's Sporting Goods, owned by our good friend Mike Naoe, is one such place. Bob's serves the West Los Angeles area with qualified employees to serve the most avid saltwater angler's needs.
Today's picture is an example of Mike's new fade wrap design on our deckhand's favorite jig rod, the SD Special. A couple of Mike's mentors developed this jig rod with 40 lb test and a 25 lb yellowtail with just the ring of a surface plug showing from his mouth.

The Bottom Of The Ninth

We finished up the trip fishing albacore and ended up getting up to the zone in the late morning. There were reports of good fishing by some boats in the morning, but when we got there the fish decided to go down. It was very similar to the fishing that we experienced the other day - where there were a few good schools, but you had to be very lucky to get on one and it was extremely easy to drive around the fish and see nothing. The other day we were on a lucky streak, but today we had the shoe on the other foot. Then when we came up to bat just before dark, we were lucky enough to get a hanging curve ball that we immediately put over the fence.
It was a perfect way to end the trip, as we were all able to let out our emotions and have fun as the albacore action was full speed.
We would like to thank Brett Edmondson for putting together a great group of people in honor of his good friend Kirk Snyder - who succumed to luekemia several years ago. He was a lover of the ocean and when he hooked a fish, he would let out the triumphant yell of SAKAMOTO.

We experienced a great day of fishing for quality yellowfin tuna and yellowtail. It was tough fishing conditions, but like our special customers that are retired now for the evening, the hard work at the rail was rewarded with trophy fish.
Some examples are George Beesley with Greg and Kevin and Bobby Haas with Nick and Ray posing with a 128lber and 118lber respectively. We also hooked a few more big ones and had lots of 50-70lb fish.
For the people going fishing in the near future, making sure your equipment is in top notch condition and practicing casting are probably the best things that can be done for preparation.

The Needle

We started out the trip anxious to sample the great fishing available on the albacore grounds. We realized that with the full moon scenario, there could be a few roadblocks in the middle of the highway. As the day progressed, it became very apparent that there were no scattered fish - only tight schools of these big albacore and finding one was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to be the chosen one and we strung together several stops and ended up having a great day.
By the end of the day, there were lots of people showered up and and enjoying the show of the mad albacore scramble from up top.

After paying our dues yesterday, patience paid off. The fish have been off the bite for last couple of days, but with the signal we saw last night our feelings were to hang tough. We had steady fishing on these Jumbo-size Albacore just about all day long.
The photo of the day is our fearless leader, David Samarin, holding up one of his Jumbos that he will be canning when he gets home.

We had a cancellation on our 5 day trip departing next Thursday, Sept. 2, Stan Chins Trip - call Lori at the office at 619 223 5414 for the details if you'd like the spot.
GOOD NIGHT,

Appreciation

We are fortunate to have the guys from James Hardware Gang this trip, who for the last several years have come out here and kicked the poop out of the fish. Being that they are of the spiritual kind, days like today to most of us spoiled people can be considered kind of tough, but to this group - they just realize how fortunate they are on the days where fish are in abundance.
We ended up picking at the "congo" sized albacore and finished our day getting railed by the "fantasy Fish". Right before dark we had a shot at the giant bluefin tuna, when a small dab that was mixed with the albacore, got on us. We were not ready as we hooked probably a dozen of these fish on 40-60lb gear and were severely outgunned.
Bill Shubin was fortunate to enough to get one of these monsters up to gaff before it chewed through the leader and one hundred and fifty pounds was a conservative guess on the size of this fish, which only leaves us to wonder how big the other unstoppable ones were??
We probably got this once-in-a-lifetime shot because of everyones unselfish and great attitude.

ALL DONE!

After a couple of just wonderful days of fishing, this morning was a little on the slow side. We had decided to finish the trip at our Paradise Island so that's what we did. And you know the old saying "You should have been here yesterday" - well we were. We enjoyed a nice ride up the line today and all of the gang had a nice afternoon of movies, books or even a nap.
We would like to say thanks Mike Goldsmith for putting together this wonderful group of guys - it's always a lot of fun every year with this bunch.

THINGS ARE STILL GOING OUR WAY

We came down to our Paradise Island in hopes of having a little action on some quality tuna and that is just what we found. The early morning was a little on the slow side but when those tuna decide to wake up, it was a lot of fun. We had 3 fish that tipped the scale all over 70 lbs and many fish in the 60 lb range; it was a nice surprise, to say the least. We have another day to fish before it's time to go home and the reports from above are still nice weather.

GOOD NIGHT,

The A.A. Gang

PICTURES CAN'T DESCRIBE THE GREAT FISHING WE HAD!

Today was one of the best days of fishing one could have; the Albacore fishing was as good as it gets. And then talk about finding a needle in a hay stack - we stumbled across a school of the smaller BFT's, that really wanted to get with it.
Well just when we thought we could not top this, we picked up one Big Eye Tuna to round out the day.
The weather is epic still and we know the wind will blow again some day, but this has been just a wonderful stretch of weather.

GOOD NIGHT AND BREAK OUT THE SUNSCREEN,

The A.A. Gang

FOUND WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR

After a wonderful ride up the line last night, we needed just a few more Albacore and whatever else might be available for us to finish up the trip. Well, what do you know, we stumbled across some of those hard-to-catch Bluefin Tuna. The Albacore fishing was also there for the taking, if you were in the market for them.
The photo of the day is Kevin with Father George holding up Dad's 48.0 lb BFT. We ended up having a great trip, with a great group of guys and just beautiful weather the whole time.
We would like to say Thank You to George Uesugi and Russ Kimura for putting together this trip, and also to all the gang that was a part of this adventure.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY

After a very good day of fishing yesterday, we experienced what slow fishing is! It wasn't like we didn't see any fish - getting them to bite was the challenge. The weather here in paradise is beautiful, so we are going to hope things are different tomorrow and give it another day. The photo of the day is George Uesugi with the 45lb Yellowtail he picked up today.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

The Albacore Gods were looking down upon us today - the ocean was alive with action for all. It started just after the sun came over the horizon; we spotted our first school of fish, then it was game on. Today was one of those days when you really got a good idea of the amount of fish that is around.
The photo of the day is what we had the chance to see all day and eyeball fishing is one of the most enjoyable fishing styles, because he who has the keen eye, wins.
The gang had a lot of fun catching these nice big Albacore, so we are going to enjoy a little Paradise tomorrow.

We Hope It Never Ends

We ended the trip up on the albacore grounds with pretty nice weather. We all agreed that any fish caught today would be icing on the cake and we were treated to not only a slice of cake, but a tall glass of milk as well. We enjoyed steady albacore action and we all marveled at the size of every one landed.

Girls

Why does it seem like women get all the help? The answer is very plain and simple, they catch a lot of fish. Claudia is posing with Nick and her jackpot winning 70lb yellowfin tuna. Claudia is the perfect example of why women and girls catch a lot of fish. First, without any egos to deal with, any suggestions made by the crew are immediately followed and an open mind is always available. Although it seems like every day is the Claudia show, our other passengers have also been able to get their licks in on these nice-sized tuna. It seems like maybe we all have a little bit to learn from our precious lady anglers.

Fun

Today's picture of Claudia and star crewmember Kevin, says it all. When both the albacore and the weather cooperate, it is very difficult not to have a good time. The day started out right with a very good night bite, but then the fishing really took a powder as the albacore did their own time-of-day bite thing that we have all unfortunately become accustomed to. Lucky for us, we were able to keep anxiety down to a minimum and we were in the right place at the right time when they decided to bite.

Looking for more fun,

HOMEWARD BOUND

We ended our trip with a nice steady bite on 25 to 35 lb Yellowtail this morning. Also picked up one nice Yellowfin before it was time to pull the anchor and head up the line. The weatherman was right; the ocean has laid down a lot in the last couple of days, so we are enjoying the ride up.
This trip was sponsored by Luc of Anglerls Choice Tackle. Unfortunately Luc couldn't make the trip, but sent out one of his right-hand-men, J.R. Meade, in his place. There was a bunch of nice raffle prizes (as always), which make these trips all the more fun. Thanks Luc.

We would like to say a Thank You to all the anglers that made this trip - we sure had some good times in the last few day with everybody, and looking forward to fishing again with all of you soon.

SOMETIMES THINGS GO AS PLANNED

We felt that we have been very lucky this trip because of the fishing we enjoyed the last couple of days; who could have known it would end like this.
We decided to fish for Albacore the last day of the trip instead of trying for them on the first day and we hit on the best day the fleet has seen for most of the season. It was very encouraging to finally see this fish that we have been looking at the last couple of weeks take off and bite.

We really had a lot of fun the last few days with Ty Breitman and his gang - this special group of people really had some good timing.

We would like to say a Big Thank You to all of you that were a part of this trip and we are looking forward to fishing with all of you next year.

WE ARE STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT THIS TIME

We decided to pass on the Albacore fishing in the beginning part of the trip and keep her rolling on down the line. We had a very enjoyable day of fishing for Yellowtail and a few nice Yellowfin tuna mixed into the count. The weatherman forecasted 10 to 20 knots of wind for this week. Well, the weather man isn't always right - the ocean is calm, and we really like it.
We have a couple more days of fishing with Ty's Guys, let's hope the fun continues.

101 WAYS TO PUT SMILES ON EVERYBODY'S FACE

After a couple of days on the offshore scene, finding fish that had a bad case of lockjaw most of the time, it was quite nice to find some fish that wanted to bite. It was primarily in the morning, but now a days if you find any fish that wants to bite - consider yourself lucky.
There is no lack of Albacore of all various sizes from 10 to 45 lbs and depending on what moon phase we are in or if you went to church on Sunday, there is a chance of having a fun day of Albacore fishing. For whatever reason we just happened to get some luck going our way and ended up catching 101 Albacore for the day, which finished up our trip on a good note.

We would like to thank Harry Yamada and Roger Kuramoto for putting this trip together. Also we would like to say Thank you to all the anglers for being a part of this trip.

ANOTHER DAY OF FRUSTRATION

We have seen more fish then we would know what to do with if they would only bite for us. After picking some fish late yesterday and getting back on them, we thought that today was going to be our day. We started the day with fish under the boat at the crack of dawn and as the sun came up they swam away. It did not take us long to start finding other schools that did not want to eat either. The photo of the day is of just one of the many spots we stopped on which only let us catch very few each time - if this fish wanted to bite it would be One Stop Shop. We are not giving up yet, maybe tomorrow these creatures will give us a break.

When we left the dock yesterday the Albacore reports were very promising, when we arrived on the grounds things weren't quite the same. We did manage to get on some fish late in the afternoon and have a little action for all our efforts. A Good Time

We went looking for fish and ended up only catching a few but everyone aboard caught at least one or let several go. The past several years have been fantastic catching years which made all of us, myself included, very spoiled. Quite often the fishing was so good we all took it for granted and lost track that one of the real reasons we come out to do this, is to escape the every day hustle and bustle of our busy schedules.

We Hope Everyone Appreciates Every Fish,

GOT FISH?

After yesterday's tease in the albacore grounds, we opted to spend the day fishing yellows so we could all wet our lines and catch a few fish. It worked out as planned as everybody had plenty of fun and action while catching yellows on both the flylined sardines and jigs. The good weather, crashing fish and bent rods were the perfect combination for a good time by all.

Carrot

We know how the horse feels that chased the carrot. When we left the point yesterday, there were reports that the albacore were finally making a little bit of a showing. The weather was absolutely flat calm and anticipation was high as the first sonar mark we stopped on the fish reacted to the chum and we instantly hooked several fish. After our first go around, we moved the boat in search of more biting fish. In recent weeks, the problem was getting the fish located but today the fleet had no problems finding them, the problem was finding fish that wanted to bite. We saw multiple deals of 25-40lb albacore on the fish finding machines that had us scrambling in search of our pliers, only to find out that they wanted nothing to do with us. One of our fellow comrades went as far as saying that the sign of fish that he saw was as good as he had seen all year, which is really saying something because we've all experienced some pretty darn good fishing.

THE RED ZONE

After our trek down at the beginning of the trip and being in search mode all day again, we came up with the The Red Zone. There is an area of very nice water that extends down a couple hundred miles down the coast that is ready for the next wave of fish to move in. In the mean time all of the Albacore are being caught up a little closer home, and so when in Rome, do as the Romans. We have a full day to mix it up with all our old buddies tomorrow to catch some Albies and then it's time to call it a trip.

PUT THE ANCHOR DOWN AND LET'S GET IT ON!

Wow, now that was some fun we had today! It was just after daylight when we arrived on scene, and we did see a couple of fair spots on the sonar early which made us believe this was going to get good. The caption pretty much sums up the day; it was just what we needed after a very long day of exploring yesterday. We are back in search mode again tomorrow, so we are all putting on our lucky hats, shirts and even breaking out our lucky rabbit feet - whatever it takes.
So the troops are all down having dinner and getting ready for bed and in high hopes of landing on the right spot tomorrow.

WHERE DID THEY GO?

Today the Long Range Fleet took off in all directions in hopes of finding some new areas of Albacore or Bluefin, but after covering several hundred miles, the results were very disappointing. The way the fishing has been the last month it would be very easy to miss by 5 or 10 miles. There is a good chance that these fish will pop their noses up again somewhere. We are going to go fish for some Yellows for now and in a couple of days try to attack them on the way home. The photo of the day is K.C. Brotherton pulling on a 120 lb crewmember (Ray) and that was the only thing we caught today. The spirits are high with all the troops and we have a lot of time left to get the job done.

THINGS ARE STARTING TO GO OUR WAY!

We planned on catching some Yellowtail today, and that's exactly what we did. At daylight when we rolled into the area, we saw just what we wanted to see - birds, fish on the meter and then things started to happen. After circumnavigating the Ocean for the last couple of days, we were all ready for some action. We enjoyed good Yellowtail fishing on just about any way you liked to fish for them. In the early afternoon it was time to take off and run up the line in hopes of finishing off with some Albacore to wrap this trip up on a good note. Even in the best of years we can go back in the Log books and remind ourselves that fish do go down and we lose them at times, but they always seem to pop their heads up and it will be our turn again.

MAMA TOLD ME THERE'D BE DAYS LIKE THIS

Well, we had high hopes for today because just two days ago we had thought we got back on the right bunch of fish - even the boats in the area had good fishing yesterday. As we were rolling down into the area, things were not the same today. We did see just a little bit fish that did not bite at all. You know the old saying when the going gets tuff, the tuff go fishing.
We are not giving up yet, we have lots of time, plenty of bait and the last time I checked, Barry's got the Beer cold. So we are going to keep looking for those Fatsos and BFTs for tomorrow's game plan.

We fished an area that we hoped would be very productive for albacore but instead we were surprised by cooperating batches of bluefin tuna that we were able to make the day on. After a few days of scratch fishing, one can only imagine the excitement of our anglers when the bluefin were boiling right on the corner. We were lucky to end the trip with the best day of bluefin fishing for us this year.
Al Tokunaga and Eddie Wong along with the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Fishing Club [round eyes more than welcome], put together a wonderful group of guys that know how to have fun.
Special thanks goes out to Teru for her delicious rice balls and to Don Newman from P-Line for donating a bunch of line.

Good Sport

Growing up the youngest of three boys, the competetive spirit was a way of life. My parents tried to instill the importance of being a good sport and I have no problem with that, as long as I win and things go my way. Enough of my first person literary ramblings, we planned on scratching away on big albacore on the offshore grounds but things didn't go our way. We had absolute beautiful weather as fishing conditions were at a premium, but we couldn't get them located. We managed to scratch some nice albacore and played catch and release with some small yellows and dorados, so things weren't a total loss.
Kenji Watanabe and our very own Gregory Tanji display a fine specimen of an albacore and big smiles.

Mission Belle

Our very good friend, Ryan Bostian, who owns the local all day island boat, would dream about the fishing we had today. We fished "dirt" for yellows and along with the steady action we had on those fish, we also had wide open action on log barracuda and big bonito. At times, they were a pain in the rear, but in perspective it was just nice to have something tugging on the end of the line.
We enjoyed a great day of fishing topped off by a beautiful sunset with Keith getting assistance from Al Tokunaga on the tank.

Frustrating, But Fortunate

Day 1 of fishing on this 5 day charter - the San Fernando Valley Japanese Americans:
We made it down to the area where we have been catching the Big Albacore and with the help of many other boats in the fleet, we were lucky enough to get them located. After we found them, that's when we all figured out that they were not in the biting mode. We would stop on meter marks and they would lay under the boat, refusing to bite the bait. When we were lucky enough to hook a few, it was just that - a few. Throughout the day, everyone could only hope that during the late afternoon they would start acting differently. It was weird because for those that were lucky enough to scratch, there were other guys that still didn't find any biting fish at all. When our last bite ended, we had put together a decent day and they were all big, beautiful, good-grade albacore.

Nail Biter

Today we were chartered by the Imperial Palace Casino for a day and a half trip and we kind of looked forward to it. We knew at least half of the folks were going to be rent rods, which was going to be a pleasant change and that it would also be fun to mix it up with the local guys - just like the Pacific Queen days.
We started out with a little grey bite in the morning, and then the day got really slow. The one day fleet had a horrible day as the fish, even though metered, would not bite. We could vouch for that as at 5 o'clock we had 20 Albacore, and then we finally got on some biting fish.
For the next three hours it was fun and games and there was great action to be had all the way into the dark. One of the last fish landed was by the Assistant Imperial Palace Casino manager, Richard Cannon. If their operation is anything like their personalities, it's first class.

SPORT CHALET 4 DAY HOME

The trip returned this morning at an early 5:45am ETA with plenty of Albacore and Yellowtail. And once again, these Albacore averaged 30 lbs with many over 40lbs. They are beautiful. The entire American Angler crew wants to thank Brad Lemoine, Andrew and Sport Chalet for sponsoring this trip. It was a pleasure to have so many newcomers on this trip and we hope to see you again soon!
Check out jackpot picture below and congratulations guys!

Good Times

We traveled back up to the albacore grounds and enjoyed steady action before we called it a trip. All morning there was a great atmosphere on deck as all the pressure of catching fish was already off, which left nothing but fun times.
We would like to thank Brad Lemoine with Sport Chalet for once again spearheading a successful trip.

Who's Responsible?

If fishing related to the old saying of "do good things and good things will happen", somebody in today's group picture really must be a good samaritan. We started out this morning in hopes of catching a few yellows, and it took a little bit of R and D in order to locate them, but eventually we discovered where they were hiding and they came out and played.
Throughout the morning we enjoyed wave after wave of nice grade yellows as our folks really came into their own, as the worked themselves out of many tangles and followed their fish like seasoned veterans. If all plans were to work out this well, we all should plan on the lottery.

Getting The Sweat Off

Fishing these big albacore so far this season has been no lead pipe cinch because they spend a lot of time "down" when they either aren't showing or just not biting. Our group of "black diamond" to "bunny slope" fishermen, took full advantage of one of the days that they were "up". The day started out pretty slow, with just a few short stops, but there was lotsa indicators leading us to believe that later in the day, it just might happen. Around lunch is when it happened, as we started going into stops where everybody at the rail would have one on and it stayed that way all afternoon.
We are on our way in pursuit of some yellowtail action, to add to the mix of the long-range experience.

FISH LUBE HOME

The gang returned this morning at 7am. They had phenomenal Albacore fishing and brought home 57 Bluefin, up to 114lbs - which were in beautiful shape after coming out of the RSW, what a treat for everyone at their 4th of July bbques tonight.
The entire American Angler crew would like to thank our friend, Barry Gambarana and all his fish lubers, for a great trip....something was mentioned about a Pig and a Barbie, but we won't talk about that.
Check out the jackpot winners below. We want to acknowledge Joey Jacoby for his temporary place as jp winner, with his 58.8 BFT, until late-comer fish caught by Mike Waina, weighed in at 60.4. Congratulations guys!

Note from the Charter master

I would like to thank Sam, Brian and the entire American Angler staff for their tireless effort to make this trip so fun and enjoyable. This is quite a group of characters with some good natured ribbing going on at all times, even the crew gets involved in the fun.

Our entire catch was kept in RSW in the holds. The fish were in pristine condition when the crew pulled them out of the fish holds at the dock.

Mitch & Steve the food was as good as it gets. The passengers were truly amazed at the meals you prepared.

Thank You

THE FAT LADY IS SINGING

We finished our day by driving away from spots of Albacore; we did stumble across a couple of spots of Bluefin tuna that did not want anything to do with us. For a parting gift, the weather is still very nice, which will make for a wonderful ride home.
The photo of the day is Mike Casey who thought it would be a good idea to break out his Fly Rod.
We have had a great trip with a most enjoyable bunch of guys and would like to say a special Thanks to Barry Gambarana, President of the Fish Lube Charter, and all of the other anglers that were a part of this trip.

WE'RE NOT GIVING UP YET

After a long run up the line last night, we did arrive in the BFT zone, right at daylight. Everything looked right - water temp, bait sign, bird life ... it just looked fishy. Even so, we got a taste of the old saying, "they've got their noses in the mud", but it was still good Albacore fishing, so we took advantage of that.
This is some of the nicest-size Albacore you will ever have the opportunity to catch in these waters, but not uncommon if you were fishing out of Morro Bay in the fall. These are a solid 30lb average; just a gorgeous grade of fish.
We have one more shot at the Bluefin tomorrow, so we will roll the dice and hope for a grand finale to finish this one off.

GOOD NIGHT,

The A.A. Gang

WE ARE ALL RESTED UP NOW

Today was not a banner day of Yellowtail fishing, but we did manage to catch a few fish - it was not what we had expected. The bonus though, is that we were able to catch some big baits in case we have another opportunity at those big Bluefin again. So, we are running back up the line and will be in the Promised Land in the morning.
All the gang are having a great time and are ready and willing to work at getting some Trophies to finish off their trip.

TODAY WAS QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY.

First of all, did we mention how nice the weather has been? It's just beautiful out here on the ocean. We were in a different mode today, mainly looking for some more Bluefin tuna to add to our catch. We did find a few spots of fish that weren't all that eager to bite our bait, but we did manage to land a couple of these nice quality fish.

The photo of the day is John Heil with the Trophy that he landed today, (boy is he lucky). John is on vaction from his day job, he is a U.S. Navy seal, and has been on two tours over in Iraq, so this has been a nice break for him.
Tomorrow we are going to try for some shallow water fish for a change of pace and then come back offshore for the rest of the trip.

THE BOYS DID GOOD TODAY.

With some luck and teamwork from all the long range boats today, the Albacore fishing was fantastic for everybody. The best fishing was in the afternoon - when these fish decided to bite, it was game on! We are going to spend tomorrow looking for BFTs and just take it from there.
The Boys are all tired now and enjoying a nice dinner, so needless to say, they are off to a nice start on this trip.

ALL DAY PLUNKER!!

Today was a little different day of fishing - we crossed over the break expecting to get on those big Albacore to start our trip off and things went as planned. We punched into the warm water and saw our first spot of fish, who weren't ready for us just yet. However, it didn't take very long to find another spot of fish to lock it up on and this time we were going to be more patient. Well, what do you know, we started picking at 45 to 55 lb Bluefin Tuna.

We drifted for 6 hours, just keeping anywhere from 1 to 5 fish going. We did manage to catch just a few of those Big Albacore mixed in with the BFT. We ended up with 53 Bluefin for the day, with the biggest one tipping the scale at 95 lbs. We are very happy with our day, and to top it off, we had nice weather to accompany our fishing.

The Photo of the day is John Heil pulling on one of the Bluefin he picked up today.

Mellow

We enjoyed a beautiful night of traveling up the line and followed it up with flat calm weather when we reached our destination. We were a half mile from our first fishing location when we noticed pretty good bird life. When we got there, the meter showed good indication of yellowtail life and when we made a chum circle, they boiled up immediately. When we put the anchor down, the fish started biting right away as these 18-25lb fish acted very eager. When we got down on deck there was something missing and that was full participation. Many people opted to watch, eat breakfast and basically just relax as everyone was content with the success of the trip.
We would like to thank Louis Papai of BAD-FISH.COM for sponsering a great trip.

Heaven

If a person who likes albacore fishing "San Diego style"were to think of the perfect day, we could probably just talk about today. Last night's 14kt breeze was exchanged for flat calm conditions in the morning. There was no night bites to be had, so we drove for about 30 minutes before we had a decent meter mark, and then the fish came under us instantly. We ended up plunking with 2-24 going for the better part of the morning. The bonus was the grade of fish that I find myself talking alot about - probably because it was so beautiful. Being conservation-minded, we left them biting and shared our wealth with another boat. Afterwards, we spent the rest of the day fishing bft and that worked out as the fish up to 50lbs would boil up and bend rods the few times we slid on them.

Morro Bay

This afternoon when the breeze started blowing, while we were stopped, we flashed on the Pacific Queen days in Morro Bay. In the morning we caught straight big fatsos, but in the afternoon the area we got into contained the biggest average grade of albacore we have ever seen in San Diego. We saw a couple of deals of bft that boiled up and bit a little, and that was a first for this year which makes this place very interesting (only the small ones in the bunch bit). Today's picture is Drew Hanson proudly displaying one of the giants.

The Amazing Race

Today we fished albacore, but more than that we were in pursuit of a highly migratory pelagic species. When the long range fleet got on this batch of fish three days ago, it was roughly 140 miles from our beloved Pt. Loma and every day afterwards it seemed to be moving at least 10 to 15 miles a day NNW. As we left the point yesterday, we thought that we would set ourselves up to be in front of the bunch. We drifted in the morning and caught no fish and after an hour it was very apparent that we over ran the fish, as the guys up the line were getting good signal. We finally caught up with the main body of fish and when we did, we enjoyed great fishing on 25-28lb class albacore. When it was all said and done, we looked at our GPS to find out that we were 60 miles from home which meant that this particular batch of fish moved 80 miles up the line in three days. Having seen this scenario in years past, we predict this batch to be 40 miles tomorrow and disappear by the following day. Tonight we are traveling south to hopefully intercept the next batch of fish as the door is open and the dinner table is set for more runs of this beautiful fish.
Pictured is Judy Barnett assisted by our own Capt. Sam with one less fish in the migration.

A Perfect Ending

We don't want to make this sound like a fairy tale-fantasy-storybook ending, but in all honesty, it was. I like to believe that if you do good things, good things will happen and even if there isn't a force that controls this stuff, it's just a good way to live.
This trip we endured plenty of slow fishing; for example, we trolled for 52 hours of daylight for two jig stikes and nobody on the boat complained about the fishing. Because of this, when we ended up on the albacore grounds this morning, the wind died and the fish started biting before the sun came up. After our morning grey bite we enjoyed classic stop and go albacore fishing and strung together several stops to get the ball rolling. About lunch time the entire fleet could not buy a bite as the albacore went down. Around 2 o'clock we happened upon a sonar mark that had the makings for an epic bite. Instantly, the fish were right on the corner and willing to bite even the heaviest lines. Everybody on the boat had a fish on and in the midst of the pandemonium, just about everybody needed a gaff (as depicted in our daily picture) as we were on our way to the perfect ending to the trip.

Striving for Sucess

Driving up from the lower bluefin area, we broke up the ride with a check on one our more exotic destinations. There was sign of fish scattered up and down the island, but we got the feel that we are a few weeks early. By gaining altitude throughout the day, we put ourselves in position to end the trip with a bang.
Spirits are high as 100% of our fingers are crossed in hopes of the sucess that we deserve.

No Hits If You Don't Go To Bat

After a great day of fishing, it seemed like a good idea to go looking for some trophies. When we woke up in the morning, we found ourselves rolling around and our flat calm picnic was now getting rained on. We planned on hitting spot after spot of finning and breezing 100 to 200 # bluefin tuna, but the whitecaps and wind put a damper on our parade. We managed to see a couple of deals of fish and even though we poured the bait on them, they refused to boil or bite. Accepting the consequences, we're on our way to see some dirt as we have covered our share of miles offshore.

The Three P's: Patience, Perserverence, and Persistence.

After spending a couple days offshore trying to milk six nickels out of a quarter, it was time to try our hand at something different. It's funny how good things happen to good people because there was not one moan or groan during the first couple days of slow fishing we got to experience yellowtail fishing at its finest. The visual show of aggression and the quality of the fish, combined for one of the best yellowtail bites most have ever seen. By lunch, tired arms and sore backs made for permanent smiles as everyone cheered one another along.

Its All About Timing

Taking a tour around the ocean when the fish aren't biting, gives one lots of time to think. The last couple of days we have been fortunate enough to see plenty of fish, but unfortunate enough to find out just how stingy the ocean can be. We caught a few yellows during our travels, but it is very apparent that all the tuna species are off the bite. Tomorrow we are going to concentrate on catching yellows to get the sweat off. Sorry no pictures the last couple of days, but the camera is on standby for when things bust loose. Our passengers are the best as everyone's head is held high.

Who Would've Thought?

Daylight brought us beautiful flat calm weather and reports of lots of fish on the machines from a couple of guys that were on the grounds off our bow. With all of the choppy weather we've been dealing with the past weeks, a feel of confidence in a great day of fishing and in good weather was felt by all. By mid-morning we were still feeling good about things even though no one had caught fish - thinking that the fish were down and it wasn't quite yet bite time. After lunch we saw several foamers that really got our hearts pumping. We were able to get the boat close enough to see the whites of their eyes and figured out that they wanted absolutely nothing to do with us. We spent the rest of the afternoon spinning on meter marks and sliding on foamers for nothing but practice. Very few fish hit the deck today, but we hope to change things tomorrow.

Humbly Yours,
The Guys

Traveling

Anxiety and excitement is usually high on the first day of traveling. Pent up excitement is hard to contain, as many times the sight of a jumping porpoise is followed by the cry of "look at those tuna!"
As we got into our first area of "jumping tuna", we noticed some extra large blow-outs and we started to pay closer attention. In the midst of the ruckus was a pod of about a dozen orcas actively feeding on sea lions.
Our professional photographer (on loan from Lena) was lucky enough to capture a glimpse into mother nature's food chain.

And on a personal note from G. Loomis/Zuker:
Well folks, Christmas is coming early this year for those on board the American Angler G.Loomis/Zuker trip. As always, John Lloyd (Zuke) will be handing out generous variety packs of Zuker's Lures to each and every passenger on board. These feathers have set standards for trolling over the years locally, nationally and internationally.
Dan Kadota and Phil Oliva of G. Loomis will be raffling off (5), Special Edition American Angler 40lb. Pelagic Rods, Shirts, Vests, hats, Red, White and Blue skeleton fish tatoos, and a Fear No Fish "crying" towel. Sufix, USA will be supplying free topshots in 40#, 50#, 60# Blue Superior mono, along with free flourocarbon leaders during the trip. Boatline leaders, kite leaders of 150-400lb Superior leader line, and Invisiline fluorocarbon heavy leaders wil also be provided for the boat. The Superior line (40 - 60lb) casts beautiful, has awesome tensile strength, knot strength, and "gets bit" in touchy bites better than any others.
Dermatone Laboratories will be supplying the best sunscreen in the industry for all the fishermen, keeping us from frying and preventing skin cancer. One application in the morning is good for the whole day, regardless of how wet or bloody you get. The tried and true SPF 33 unscented, and the new SPF 45 Endurance sunscreens will be on board for all to utilize.
Tady Lures also donated jigs for the trip, including some new secret weapons. When it comes to iron, Tady has set the standards through the years with hottest styles and colors in the Southern California fishing market.
I would like to thank all of the supporting cast, making this trip a success before even leaving the dock.

Sun., June 13, 2004

IT'S NOT A MATTER OF TIME, JUST A MATTER OF WHEN!

With the little signal we had a few days ago going through this area, we knew it had to be looked at again. Things looked pretty slim most of the day but there was just enough to keep us interested. The photo of the day shows the first big school we saw - from which we only caught two Albacore for our efforts, but it wasn't long after that when those fish decided to turn on. These fish range in size from 20 to 35 lbs., or Fatsos. This sure looks like we are going to having some good times in the near future. The rest is history!

GOOD YELLOW FISHING

We moved down the road a little bit last night and were pleasantly surprised by today's sucess. I tip my hat to the troops for all their hard work catching fish because most of them were taken today on the Yoyo jigs.
In the morning we were just getting a few fish here and there, but around lunch time the chow bell went off and when the fish finally decided to bite, it was a lot of fun.
These are a very nice grade of Yellowtail that we have been able to put on board - some of which are up into the 30 lbs class, for sure.
We are going to run back up the line to take a look at the area where we picked up a few of those Fatso Albacore on the way down - but we have some miles to burn up first. We should arrive in that area on Sunday and tomorrow will be a travel day, but you never know what a guy might find this time of the season?.

A LITTLE ACTION ON THE PLUGS

We arrived at our destination around 11:00 this morning, and after a couple of anchor jobs, we found what we had hoped to find. It seemed that we missed the morning bite because it was very good fishing for just a short time. The size of our Yellowtail ranged from 18 to 30 lbs.
Just about all of our fish were caught on the lures - either Yoyo or surface plugs.
In today's photo, Mike's fish was landed on the Catchy Tackle lure. The weather is a little breezy so we are hoping this will back off for us soon.
We are going to fish for Yellows again tomorrow and just take it from there.

THE WIND IS UP AND WE'RE GOING DOWN

Today was a travel day for the most part, but we did manage to stumble onto some of the Bigger grade Albacore in our path. We only caught six of these Jumbos and felt that what we caught did not justify what we saw. These fish weighed from 30 to 37 lbs, which is very encouraging for our future trips.
We will be traveling all night before we reach our next destination in the morning. The troops are doing fine and everybody seemed to get caught up on their rest to be ready to go at it again tomorrow.

STARTING OUT WITH SOME ACTION

We chose to spend the first day of our trip up in the Hot Albacore area. We arrived in the early a.m., before the sun was even up yet and there was very good sign of fish while we were looking around in the dark. It was not an early bite today, but by mid morning things started to get going. It is what I would call good scratch fishing most of the day.
We are moving on down the coast now and continuing on with our trip. We will be looking at some different water tomorrow in hopes of something that might have some Shortfins attached!

Good night and sleep tight,

The Perfect Ending

Some of the best fishing trips I've ever been on have been when catching was slow. Some of the worst trips I've ever been on have been when catching was good. We had good fishing this trip, ended up with plenty of fish, but because of a few tough days the group grew together and every fish that was brought over the rail was appreciated and not taken for granted. During the trip we had periods of fast action, but at times the only game in town was a book or a good cribbage match. Yesterday we left the yellowtail grounds early to put ourselves in position for some albacore fishing. We were lucky to be pointed in the right direction by a watchful eye and ended up having a great day. The forecasted fifteen knots turned into glassy seas and the uncertain prospects turned into great fishing. To see the albacore on the corner and hear hooting and hollering was a good way to end a great trip.
Pictured here is our happy group led by our fearless leader from Sport Chalet, Brad Lemoine.

Wer'e Gettin There

Today we went to one of our favorite yellowtail haunts and while driving around in the morning, the stress level was high due to the lack of sign. After a few anchor jobs, it was very hard to keep my cool because even though the current was going the right direction, there was a precarious absence of fish. Going on the hunch of my fishy partner we went looking away from the structure and found an area of birds that had spots of puddling yellows. We ended up picking a few off every spot and at times had several fish hooked up as we enjoyed the visual fishing. We left the area after lunch to hopefully put ourselves in a position to end the trip with a bang and get in on the albacore action. Today was the day where the ocean changed for the better, as the albacore floated in the local one-day area.

Whats Going On?

An inexplicable fishing phenomenon is occurring right now in the eastern tropical pacific, where it seems like no matter where you are or what you're fishing for it's not biting. We tried fishing along the beach and it seemed like even when we saw yellows puddling on top, they wouldn't respond to the chum or any jigs that were wound right through the middle of them. We were lucky to end up with several handfuls of yellows and many of them were very nice-sized, such as this speciman displayed by Ralph Perez. The overall feeling is a very humbling one while we are going through this tougher period of fishing and it really puts things in perspective as far as appreciating every fish that we catch. We hope tommorow is going to be the day that things turn around, because when it does there is plenty of fish around so its going to be lots of fun.

How many we get?

With the weather forecasted at an amiable ten knots, we left the tough conditions of Alijos Rocks behind us with high hopes for today. We headed inside to a temperature break where we saw signs of bluefin tuna a week and a half ago. At daylight, we were about ten miles away from the change, which alotted plenty of time for tea and crumpets.
When we reached the change, we instantly saw out first spot of breaking fish. Even though we threw bait and just got a few boils, hopes were high as it wasn't long before we saw another pack of breaking fish. By about the fourth spot we tried for no bites, we decided to head for greener pastures. On our way to the other side of the fence, the forecasted ten knots turned into a formidable fifteen to eighteen accompanied by whitecaps which made spotting the breaking fish near impossible. Throughout the day we saw and tried ten spots of these breaking fish for the same result.
The funny thing is that from hurricane bank all the way to the local albacore zone, there was plenty of fish seen with no bites (it's a powerful moon.)
Our picture of the day sums up our day's catch.

We Earned Them

With the good sign of fish around yesterday we looked forward to a fun day of fishing. When daylight arrived we found that conditions deteriated and what little current existed was going the wrong direction. After several anchor jobs we had the tuna settle in on us as they boiled on our chum all around the boat however getting them to bite was near impossible. There was no trick to getting a bite but instead it was shear determination and hard work that prevailed for the lucky anglers that happened to tie into either a nice yellow or one of the tunas.

We ended up the day with a decent catch aboard highlighted by some nice tuna such as the one held up by Sam and big Jim.Tomorrow we are after a different quarry so wish us luck.

Conditions

We've been traveling for two days in beautiful flat calm seas and the big question in everybody's mind is, how good are the conditions going to be? The first anchor job answered that question in a hurry as we enjoyed fast and furious action right off the bat. Quality Yellows were biting, as good as it gets, and at times we had up to 12 hooked at once with just enough tuna around to keep things interesting.
Conditions stayed at a premium for just a few hours and as they diminished so did the action, but not before everyone enjoyed a great time. The yellows were as big as 36lbs as seen in our daily picture caught by Dan on the surface plug [which he dedicated to Ken] and the dozen YFT put aboard were as large as 90lbs.
The stretch goal for tomorrow is to once again enjoy a great long range experience and to catch a few fish.

THINGS STILL LOOK GOOD

Well, the day started out just like we left it a couple of days ago, but the fish didn't stay up very long today. Right at daylight the handful of boats that were down here in the area all had a signal of fish right away, but after a couple of hours it was near impossible to get close to an Albacore, much less hook one. We had caught 10 Albacore after 9:00 a.m. this morning; they just had their noses in the Mud today. The area still looks the same - temp edge and Kelps with Yellowtail on them to keep you busy while on the Longfin hunt. We did manage to catch a total of 30 Albacore and 105 Yellowtail for the day complimented by some beautiful weather.
The photo of the day is the gang waiting to enjoy a wonderful dinner before they all put their Bunny Slippers and go to bed.
We would like to Thank all of the Anglers that were on board with us today and we are looking forward to fishing with you again soon.

SO MUCH FOR HOPE OF NICE WEATHER

After another bumpy ride up the line, about 100 miles - we did manage to catch a few Albacore before it was time call it a trip -7 to be exact - and the fish weighed 15 to 25 lbs (most of which were caught on bait and we did get on those fish on the troll).
We are going to arrive at the dock around 8:00 in the morning. A quick recap on the trip includes excellent Yellowtail fishing from 12 to 37 lbs and a little shot at those elusive Bluefin Tuna and also a sample of Albacore to go with it.
The troops handled our choppy weather like champions, 15 to 20 knots of wind, which also doesn't make things any easier to locate fish, but there is still good sign of Bluefin and Albacore and plenty of beautiful water around to make for another banner year of fishing.
We would like to say Thank You to Bobs Sporting Goods for sponsoring our trip, and especially everbody that was a part of this trip with us.

Thank You,

Your Crew - Sam, Brian, Keith, Nick, Gregg, Steve and Mitch.

THEY WERE HITTING THE PLUGS

After a not-so-nice day yesterday, it was very enjoyable to actually stop the boat and fish today. The weather did back off this morning and let us spend all day at the rail either soaking a live bait, dropping down a yoyo jig or casting a Long Rod with your favorite surface plug tied on the end of your line. The Troops are having a nice dinner on the anchor now, then it's time to start heading up the line. We are going to give one more try for some early season Albacore before we kick it for the barn, so keep your fingers crossed.
The photo of the day is Gary Hashimura and Paul Medina with a couple fish on their favorite plugs!

MR. WEATHERMAN WASN'T LISTENING

We made an attempt to fish Bluefin, but the weather came up and it turned into a day of struggling and relying on our electronics to look for fish. We did end the day on an encouraging note and found a small school of Bluefin - but they weren't in a cooperating mood - so everyone ended up hunkered down and reading their book today. Tomorrow is a new day and we plan to spend it at an island somewhere catching Yellowtail in calm seas.
Check back tomorrow...

GOOD NIGHT,

The A.A. Gang

TIME TO SHIFT GEARS

We had another good day of Yellowtail fishing and some nice weather to go with it. It's time to spend the next couple of days on the Tuna grounds for Part II of our trip and for that we hope the weather people are going to continue being nice to us.
We're not sure who was in charge of taking pictures today, but we will try to make up for it tomorrow.

GOOD NIGHT,

The A.A. Gang

P.S. Hi Doreen, I miss you. Love, Kelly

Mon., May 17, 2004

YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!

First of all, the weather just does not get any better than what we enjoyed today. The plan was to fish for Yellows today, and we did get in on some of that, but early this morning we saw some breaking Bluefin and so took advantage of picking up a few. We ended up landing 11 nice Bluefin for our efforts.
After lunch the Tuna fishing was over so we thought we'd go check out a Hot spot for Yellows and those Forks were waiting for us. We had a lot fun catching Yellows on the surface plugs and also on the Yoyo.
We are going to start the morning fishing for Yellows again before we take a look out in deeper water in hopes of getting another shot at those BFT's.
The Photo of the day is our Star crew member Gregg Tanji with his father Bob Tanji, ( I wonder what he is going to do with that fish when gets home ?)

SMOOTH SAILING DOWN THE LINE

We took the outside route on the way down today and unfortunately did not exactly find what we had hoped for. Although conditions were plenty good, there was a lack of anything to catch.
But,it's just a matter of time before it all comes together and we are having wonderful weather, so we've got that going for us.
Tomorrow we are going to fish down the beach for Yellows and then we'll just take it from there.

GOOD NIGHT, WE ARE DREAMING OF THINGS WITH FORKED TAILS!

SUNTAN AND LIMITS OF FUN.

Well today's weather would be described as, "as good as it gets" and the fishing was a lot of fun too. After running into a few Yellowtail yesterday on the way out, today we had a good time catching a share of bottom grabbers.
The photo of the day is Dave Mcphail with his Lingcod, jackpot of the day. Dave wanted to make sure to say hi to his family - Maryann, Leslie and Spencer. He said he missed you guys.
Tomorrow we are going to go offshore and try our luck .

Today was a different day: the boat had poor traveling conditions and bad weather - it finally backed off to decent waters in the early evening. However, this was a hearty group of folks who perservered and fished every stop, which paid off with 4 Albacore and 18 Yellowtail.

Tomorrow morning's ETA is 7:15am - we'll see you then.

The entire American Angler crew wants to thank everyone on the trip - this was a great bunch of guys!

It's still April

With all the excitement of the early season Albacore arrival, we left the dock Friday wanting to be a part of that hype. We had fair success just a few days before this trip down around 130 miles and wanted to repeat that today. When we got down in the area, we found that in just a few days the ocean had changed - as it does - with an endless amount of kelps to look at throughout the day. We did end up catching 6 Yellowtail and a couple of those Albacore to throw in the mix.
Today's catch was not a banner one, but with the early sign of fish around and spread out from 300 miles to 75 miles already, I think that we all are looking at fun times fishing offshore in the near future.
Albert Flores was the big winner of Jackpot today with a 12 lb Yellowtail.

We would like to Thank everybody that was a part this trip very much and are looking forward to fishing with all of you in the future.

Thank you,

Your crew - Sam, Gregg, Keith, Ray, Kevin, Steve and Eddie

2nd place: Gary Briggs with a 14lb Albacore
3rd place: John Lopez with a 12lb Albacore

There are still 5 spots available on the 3 day trip coming up - Trip #4 departing Thurs. April 29 and returning Sun. May 2. Join us for fun, shallow rock codding and a chance for some early Albacore and Yellowtail action with the boys on the American Angler!

GOOD WEATHER AND FUN COD FISHING

Terry Hoiland led the band wagon today, our first day of fishing on this 3 day expedition, with this nice Cowcod, the photo of the day. We are very blessed once again with nice weather and good fishing. Tomorrow we are going to shift gears and try to locate some exotics for our happy anglers. We'll start looking around somewhere on the coast and just take it from there.

AT THE DOCK

The boat returned this sunny Easter morning at 6:30am with a beautiful load of Yellowfin and Yellowtail. After the weigh in, there were 9 Yellowfin over 100lbs and there were a few nice Yellowtail caught; 41.8lbs caught by Doug Woodard and a 39.5lb Tail caught by his fishing buddy, Greg Izay. The tuna were bait fish and those spring Tails were caught on the flyline, dropper loop and some were even yo-yo fish.

This first trip of the American Angler's season was a great way to kick off the year and a positive indication of what's to come. We still have a few spots on a couple of upcoming 7 and 8 day trips - give the office a call @ 619 223 5414.

THE FINAL TROLL REPORT

After having a wonderful trip, the thought of even trolling for Albacore in the month of April might seem a little bit nuts. But with the fish that have been caught here in the last couple of weeks, it sounded like it was worth a try. I wish we had a good fish report for today but even though we don't - things look very good for an early season to say the least.
We would like to say Thank You to all of the Anglers who joined us on this first Spring trip and are looking forward to fishing with all of you again in the future.

ETA 0630

Thank You very much,

Talked to the guys a little while ago and tomorrow morning's ETA will be 6:30a.m. - so check back later for today's fish report (they were trolling offshore for Albacore) and we'll see you in the morning!

A LITTLE BREAK IN THE RIDE UP

When we arrived at the Island, we basically made the full tour before we found what we were looking for. The water temp is warm for this time of the year - 62.5 degrees, which is a good thing. We only spent a couple of hours fishing today but it was a great way to break up the ride up with just a little bit of action.
The photo of the day is our Veteran angler, H.P. Yamashiro, with star crew member Keith ( The Beef) Hilton. We are going to try our luck at some offshore fishing tomorrow before we throw in the towel and call it a trip. We have had just beautiful weather every day and today is no different.

GOOD NIGHT AND THINK LONGFIN!

TIME TO ROLL ON UP

We finished our last day at the Rocks with just an outstanding bite on some Alijos Fat Boy Yellows in the morning and then mid morning we got set up for a shot at the Tuna. It has been later and later everyday when conditions have been best for us, but today it just never happened. We did manage to get a handful of that nice grade Tuna before it was time to go and we still saw fish around us, but like I said, today the conditions just weren't the same as they've been the last few days. (That's fishing)

We've just had a wonderful trip down here and things look very promising for our upcoming Spring Trips. We're going to run up to San Benitos Island and do a little research there tomorrow.

GOOD NIGHT AND STANDBY FOR SOME YOYO FISHING,

Brian & Sam

Wed., April 7, 04

JUST ANOTHER DAY ON THE BANKS

Well, we started off at a pretty slow pace, but as the day progressed so did the Tuna. We began to see fish boil around and then we started hooking some, with the best action after lunch. There is a good chance that some of these fish we have been getting are very close to weighing in at the 100lb mark.
The photos of the day are Dave and Bruce with a couple of the fish that they landed today.
Tomorrow is going to be our last day here, so we'll see if we can keep picking away at these Nice, Quality, Springtime Fish.

IT'S OFFICIAL!

The ROCKS are ON!! I don't know what the boats at Santa Cruz Island are doing or Raymond on the Toronado at Catalina Island, or Steve on the Tracer fishing San Clemente Island - one thing is for sure, it's darn good fishing down here. We have been here for two days now and having a wonderful time. Once again we had a little better shot at the Bigger grade Tuna with steady Yellowtail fishing mixed in - and we are going to hang out here at least a couple more days before we have to start running up the line.
The photos of the day are Greg and Kuni with a sample of the fish they landed today.
So if anybody out there in internet land is wondering if they should come fishing in the near future on a 7 or 8 day trip...no need to wait any longer. We still have a few openings on our May 7&8 day trips.

STEADY ACTION

That title pretty much sums up today's fish report.
We arrived here at the Rocks around 10:00 in the A.M. and it was very good fishing. There was a nice of mix of fish that were caught today: Yellowfin Tuna from 20 lbs to 40 lbs with few 50 to 80 lbs. Also good Yellowtail fishing - 18 to 25 lbs with a few fish up to 40 lbs.

It was awesome April fishing.
The photos of the day are Skip Stendro with his Big Tuna, and Doug Woodard with one of the nice Yellows that he picked up on day one.
We have a lot of time left in our trip so we'll see what tomorrow brings us.

Well, we are back in action and ready to have some fun this season. Today is our first full day of traveling down on our first Spring trip of the year. We are going to be at the Rocks tomorrow sometime before lunch, and we are hoping for some fun in the sun.
As shown here, we're takin' it easy in our redecorated galley - just one of the many upgrades completed this maintenance season.

We're on our way

The guys got away from the dock this morning a little before 8am (thanks to all the passengers making the effort to be here for an extra early sign in - thank you!) which will give them more fishing time on this 8 day trip.
We anxiously await the first fish report which should arrive sometime Monday night. Check back then for status on this first trip of the season!

WEIGH DAY

After a 3 day boat ride up the coast, we were anxious to actually weigh all these Cows onboard. Prior to our arrival, we heard that some of the fish on a couple of the other boats were weighing heavier than they had taped out. We knew that we had 13 Tuna over 200 lbs and 1 Tuna over 300 for sure. Well, when those Monsters hit the scales, we were shocked about the true weights on these fish. When it was all said and done, we had 20 fish over 200 lbs and Jack's fish that had taped out at 303 lbs, ended up weighing 315 pounds. Brad LeMoine was robbed of a 300 pounder by less than a half a pound - his fish weighed 299.6 lbs.
Well, now that all the smoke has settled, the fish have been weighed and sent off to the processers and everyone's on their way home - it's time to think about next year.
We will be running two of these 14 day fly back trips scheduled in January of 2005. The first trip will be sponsored by Bob's sporting goods leaving on Jan. 5 of 05 and the second leaving on Jan. 20 of 05, will be sponsored again by Sport Chalet.

I have been Long Range fishing since 1981 and have been on numerous long trips of great success and this trip we just returned on, is on the Top 10 list, without a doubt. I know that this season so far has proven to be one of the best seasons for Big Fish and that we as a fleet, never even got anywhere near the Islands. There are still areas that we would like to fish even further down the coast that can produce these fish of a lifetime.

For all the guys that were a part of our last trip of the season - I thank each and eveyone of you for being a part of this trip of a lifetime for me.

Thank you,

Sam Patella

MOTORING UP

Just touching base - we are having a relaxing trip up the line with beautiful weather. Check back tomorrow for an exact ETA on Sat. morning. It will most likely be sometime between 9 and 10am.

Come on down and see our catch of Jumbo YFTs - including 13 over 200lbs and one of those that taped out at 303lbs, (caught by regular passenger, Jack O'Donnell). We are anxious to see it hit the 3 mark at the dock.

PICTURE PERFECT

We have been experiencing slow fishing the last couple of days, but for the guys that have been putting in the time, it has paid off with fish of a lifetime. Today was going to be our last day of fishing and we hoped to finish it off with a bang. The large Bang started at 0230 in the morning when a school of Cows found all the giant squid that had been attracted to the boat throughout the night. They started blowing out and you could see the blue backs of these big Tuna as they were swimming through the water. We woke everybody up immediately and when the squid with hooks hit the water, it was game on!
In all our experience, this ranks with one of the best night bites we have ever seen. We ended up with 24 fish which included 6 fish over 200 lbs and hopefully 1 over 300 lbs.
All that were involved will never forget this epic night bite and perfect ending.

Thanks to Brad and the Sport Chalet Gang - everybody had fun.

ANOTHER DAY IN THE SUN

These fish we have been catching here in the last 24 hours are showing a little different feeding pattern than last week when this trip started. It has been very slow fishing during the daylight hours and today we only caught 3 of the 11 fish when the sun was up. We started hanging fish at 0430 hours and by sunrise it was basically over.
We have one more day at trying for these Trophies so we are all going to bed early tonight and plan to go at it in the early a.m. hours.
The photos of the day are a good idea of the quality that has been coming over the rail this trip, there haven't been a lot of bites, but when you get a nibble - it's a good one.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE QUALITY

This is not what anybody would call steady fishing, but in the last few days - the next bait you threw out just might be your fish of a lifetime. We ended the day with only 6 fish, however they range in size from 150 lbs to 248 lbs.
We have a couple more days to fish, so there are still opportunities to be had for all - to catch that one fish.
The weather right now is as nice as it gets - hope we don't run out of sunscreen. The photo of the day is Robert Crawford with his fish that he bagged right before dinner.

JACKS DAY

Well today was one of those days mama told me I would have, that is unless your name was Jack. We ended the day with only 4 fish, but Jack O'Donnell had two of those fish - the biggest taping out at 186 lbs and the other around 160 lbs. Jack Sowell's fish taped out at 222 lbs, so the Jacks had a great day.
We are hoping that tomorrow is everybodys day.
The weather today was windy in the morning, but by the afternoon it straightened out to be another beautiful sunny day.

WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF SUNSCREEN!

Still nice weather here today, but just a little slower fishing than we have had here in the past few days. A couple of the guys that had not landed a fish over 100 lbs yet, did so today. We finished the day with 6 fish - and most of those came early in the day.
We are going to run into Capt. Brian's hot bait spot and try to top off the tanks and see what happens tomorrow.

ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

Well the morning started out a little slow, but by midmorning things were happening. We stopped on our first sonar mark and landed 5 fish - we saw a couple of other marks that did not produce anything for our efforts, but with a little patience and persistence, we finished today with 15 fish total, two of which were over the 200 pound mark.
The photo of the day is some of the gang with some of these beauties that we are catching down here in sunny Baja. We still have a lot of time before this trip is all said and done, and we are off to a good start.

THANKS FOR TURNING OFF THE WIND MACHINE

Well, it was sometime around midnight when the weather started getting better, and by daylight it was down right nice out here again. We ended the day with 13 Jumbos and are running in to try and get some bait and see what we can pick up tomorrow.
The photo of the day is Gerald Scholl and Capt. Brian - this Tuna is an average of the size fish we are catching.
Bill Randall caught one that taped out at 210 lbs, but we were having a bad camera moment.

FROM FLAT CALM TO THE FLEMISH CAP

What happen to our nice weather? The wind started blowing just before daylight and just kept blowing harder and harder all day..... oh did we mention the Rain. It rained harder then I've seen all season. It didn't look good. But, you know that didn't stop us from producing some Trophy fish today. We did manage to land 10 fish over 100 pounds, which is just what this trip is all about. The wind took its toll on some other fish that we had hooked but one thing about it, the wind never blows forever.
The photo of the day is our sponsor Brad Lemoine of Sports Chalet, with his personal best fish.
We would sure like someone to turn the wind machine off sometime soon, Thank You.

A LITTLE BREAK IN THE TRAVELING

We have been running for two days now but the guys were getting hungry for some Sushi, (we aim to please!) so that's just what we did this morning. We made a stop, got a few smaller tuna and on our way again. We are going to make a short stop for some mackerel tonight after dinner and then we will be on the Hunt for some Jumbos.
We have had flat calm weather for the whole ride down and hope it stays this way for a while. Well, all the guys are rigged up and ready to go so today is the last day of napping and tomorrow it's time to go into FISH MODE... keep your fingers crossed for us.

They're Off

The boat left yesterday morning @ 8am for a Sport Chalet-sponsored 11/14 day trip, (11 days if you fly home from Cabo and 14 if you ride the boat home). They are having excellent traveling weather and everyone is settled into a good book, movie or just resting the day away.

Check back tomorrow for more exciting details

NEW YEARS TRIP BACK

The boat returned this morning at 0630 with a nice catch of Yellowfin Tuna (mostly in the 30 - 40lb range, but a few weighed in at ninety something and one, caught by one of our friend and regular passenger, Stan Chin, tipped the scale at over the hump. There were also nice Yellowtail and some delicious bottom dwellers, including a whoppin' 18lb Sheephead caught by Alex Moser - nice teeth on that one.
These anglers enjoyed each others company for a special trip where they brought in the new year together. You can bet some new friendships were forged in these 8 days - just one of the many joys of long range fishing.

Check out the jackpot photo below - congratulations!

1st place: Stan Chin 103.3lb YFT
2nd place: Matt Miller 96.8lb YFT
3rd place: Brian Firlit 95.7 YFT

Thanks to everyone and hope to fish with you all again soon!!

SAN MARTIN JUNK FEST

After a fair ride up the line last night, we arrived at San Martin at the crack of dawn, with all intentions of targeting some Yellowtail and anything else we might snag. The first couple of anchor jobs proved the current conditions were just not right for any surface action, but that didn't seem to bother these guys at all. Bombs away! It was pretty steady action on the Lings and Things most of the morning. We are on our way home now and it's a bumpy ride, I might add.
All in all we had a very successful fishing trip, so we're not going to let a little wind spoil it. We had Yellowfin Tuna action up to 100 lb class, don't forget about the Cedro's Homeboys-(36 lb) and not to be left out, the Lings and Things wrapped up this New Year's Trip.

We are looking at a 0630 eta at the dock and we would like to say Thank You to all Anglers on this trip that helped us bring in the New Year.

A LITTLE FUN AT THE ISLAND

Well we had a most enjoyable day of flat weather fishing in the lee of an Island. We ended up catching a total of 43 Yellowtail for the day.
The photo of the day is Tom and Stan with a couple of trophy-size Yellows that they caught in the a.m. area. We took off for the other end of the Island where we had good action with the Yoyo jigs for just a short time before they basically quit biting. So needless to say, the afternoon didn't produce a whole lot of fish.
We are running up the coast to finish up the trip around San Martin Island.

WELL..... THE WEATHER IS GREAT

Today was basically a travel day, even though we were ready to start the year out with a big hit. We had a couple of straggler Yellowfin on the trolling lures, and that was all we have to report for the days efforts. We are going to shift gears and put on our Yellowtail hats for tomorrows activity.
The photo of the day is how we wish it was out here everyday, so we are enjoying this beautiful ocean right now.

NEVER SAY DIE!

Well, this is how the last day of the year passed - we saw a good bunch of fish this morning that gave us a little taste and then it turned into the all day boat ride. But without ever giving up, we finally had a couple of good stops to end the year on wonderful note.
The photo of the day is the gang with their catch, to wrap up the year. We are going to fish for a little bait tonight before we make our next move and then we will just see what the New Year brings us tomorrow.

FROM ALL OF US ONBOARD THE AMERICAN ANGLER, WE WISH YOU GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN THE NEW YEAR.

THE TUNA GODS WERE GOOD TO US TODAY

Well the weather is still nice, which for this style of fishing is a Big Plus and it helped make today another successful day of Tuna fishing. These fish are mostly 30 to 45 lbs, but we had a few more of the 60 to 80 lb variety and a couple that are right around 100 pounds.
We are going to fish for Tuna again tomorrow before we start heading back up the line and try for some Yellowtail somewhere up the coast. Today's photos are some of the happy faces you would have seen on the American Angler deck today.

WE'RE BACK IN ACTION!

After a little Holiday break we are back in Fish mode and although we had to endure a not-so-nice ride down the coast for about 300 miles of traveling, today the Weather Gods smiled down upon us with calm seas.
We were lucky enough to find some 30 to 45lb Yellowfin Tuna and in a few of the stops, those Tuna got a little frisky! Needless to say we ended up the first day of fishing with a lot of Happy Anglers.
We are going to keep traveling down the coast tonight in hopes of finding some of those 100 lb class fish and that is the plan for the next couple of days and then we'll just take it from there.
The photo of the day is Virgil Arends and Linda Feldman with two of their fish caught today in the hot and heavy action. (Hope Virgil's family and friends are following this report, because it's an exciting first for our new Iowa friend). Virgil's fish is around 75 lbs and Linda's fish is 50 lbs plus.

HEADING BACK DOWN

The American Angler departed Saturday before noon on their first annual New Years Trip. Everyone was excited to get going and happy to be departing in sunshine and not rain and wind, as they did the day before.
So far the journey has been uneventful - the weather is a little choppy, but since they are riding downhill, it hasn't been too bad. The passengers are mostly resting and eating and preparing themselves for Day 1 of fishing. Check back tonight for an update - this report was a check-in for loved ones watching the site for details on their anglers!

Traveling Down and Down,

The Guys
