Lots Of Big Tuna We would like to thank all the passengers and Big Game International for the wonderful job they did on these big fish (they are just plain mean out in that open water). We enjoyed this group who worked together so well - like a family - and hope to see you next year! Brian, Sam and the rest of the American Angler crew would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and let you know that the next fish report will be posted after the 8 day departs on Dec. 27th. And although that trip is full, we do have 2 spots available on our 11/14 day trip which departs on Jan. 10th - this will be one last chance to fish (and Big Fishin' at that), with the guys before their 2 month haitus. Here is the Jackpot photo, and a picture of Capt. Brian and Beth Smith with just one of her nice over 100lb Tuna.
Happy Holidays |

COME ON DOWN The American Angler's ETA tomorrow is 6:00am. The boat had a fairly uneventful day from a fishing standpoint, but it was an enjoyable ride. So, if you have family/friends on board or if you just want to see a lot of Jumbo Tuna over 100 pounds, then we'll see you B & E (that's bright and early). Traveling Up And Up, The Guys |

VACATION Nobody's been to San Benitos Island for a while, so we thought we'd stop there and give it a try. We were excited to see pretty good sign of Yellowtail on the meter, but were disappointed to find that there was no current once we had the anchor down. We tried various anchor jobs around the island in search of good conditions to fish, but only suceeded with a few here and there. We then tried drifts and yo-yoing jigs on a slow but steady basis and we ended up with a nice catch of decent size Yellowtail. Enough about fishing. After wrestling big tuna and yesterday's northward travel up the line, it was nice to fish at a leisurely pace in flat calm weather and enjoy the day. For you local fisherman - the enclosed photo is not a mistake. Booger is not shown at the Coronado Islands, but rather he's with us for his annual guest appearance with passenger, Paul Dawson, down here on the American Angler. ![]() Traveling Up And Up, The Guys |

Nothing Colder Then Yesterdays Hot Dog We traveled up the coast to gain some altitude and hopefully enjoy some light line action and have some fun. The whole trip we have used 80 and 100lb test, so the idea of using our lighter gear and pulling on some yellowtail seemed like the perfect way to break up the ride North. We started on the beach at a historical"big fish" spot, and we were disappointed to find nothing but smaller ones. We spent the rest of the day hopscotching from one spot to another while working up the beach - for pretty much either no current or smaller tossback yellowtail. Tomorrow we're going to stop at one of the islands, in hopes of catching a few bonus fish before calling it a trip. Even though we had slower fishing, everybody enjoyed the tranquil pace of the day and instead of worrying about what we're going to catch, we appreciated what we already have aboard. ![]() Have A Good Night, The Guys |

LUCKY I had the good fortune of working for one of the best fisherman ever to run a sportfishing boat and he goes by the code name of Westy. His definition of luck is: when planning and opportunity come together. Just when we thought yesterday was cow fishing at its finest, today proved that even the best can be improved upon. The weather came down even more than yesterday, and when we slid on a bird school of foaming cows, we took full advantage of our "luck." Not only did we hook plenty of fish, we took full advantage by landing a good percentage of what we battled. Due to the lack of wind and with good luck on our side, the fish stayed around the boat and the opportunity to hook and land a big tuna was there until we had our fill. We ended up landing one fish over 200# and a multitude of 150 to 190s. People asked us if we've ever seen it like this before, and personally I would have to say it would have been back during the heyday of the islands. Shown are a few anglers with as many fish as we could fit in the picture, as we still had a few fish hooked up. ![]() Would Rather Be Lucky Than Good, The Guys |

Don't Worry If You're The Weather Guy We woke up this morning and the wind had backed off to nothing; absolutely no wind and a little residual swell. As hoped for, these ideal conditions enabled our guys to find all the fish sign necessary to put us in the right area. Instead of taking it out on the weatherman, we took it to the big tuna and hurt them in a big way. Three of our stops were marineland on the stern, as big cows were rolling through like volkswagons. Two speeds and hundred pound were the weapon of choice, as we put the wood to 100-200lb fish: almost everyone on the boat landed a personal best. The Wong brothers were a few of the many that did extremely well and being that this is a family operation, we felt that this picture would be appropriate. November and even December sure look like a perfect time to come down and fish in the pasture. ![]() Thankful For Every One We Got, The Guys |

WE WOULD LIKE TO GET A HOLD OF THE WEATHER GUY After taking a beating on the way to the bait grounds last night, we enjoyed the calm sanctuary of bait-making on a stable platform. After tanking up on perfect size greenies we had high expectations for getting a bunch of cows. When we got up this morning, it was raunchy weather, which made it next to impossible to look for any sign of fish. For about an hour and a half in the morning, we had a slight reprieve from the wind and it paid off in a couple of stops, where the fish boiled up and bit the mackeral on heavy line. We managed to bring in a handful of fish out of each stop. Right about the time we thought we were onto something, the wind came up and kicked our ass. It was very choppy which made it hard to work, but we're hoping the weather comes down tomorrow. Pictured below is Lieutenant Mike Goldsmith, who endured two broken reels and a sore back, but persevered to land his biggest fish ever. ![]() Does Anyone Know The Weather Guy's Number? The Guys |

Spoiled Today when we woke up for watch, right away something was different -instead of the flat calm lake that we have been fishing on, the breeze had come up and so had the sea conditions. We knew that we would have a tough go at it because the type of fishing that we are doing requires looking through binoculars for any kind of success. We started out the day with a few short stops on some really nice 75lb fish and then proceeded to have a prety good midday lull. Anxiety in the wheelhouse was running very high at this point, thank god the guys spotted a pretty nice area of breaking fish which payed off in a big way. The call went over the p.a. to let them have it and the stern erupted in 100-130lb fish and by the time we shut the engines down we had at least 12-15 fish hooked all at once. The choppy weather really took its toll, and we lost a lot of fish, but did manage to salvage a few as depicted by our happy anglers. ![]() Looking Forward To Calm, The Guys |

Biting Nails We started our day in beautiful, flat calm weather in a zone with no fish and no sign of life. Just about the time the tenth person stuck his head in the wheelhouse and asked, "are we there yet?", we happened on an area with scattered birds and started picking away at 30-70lb Yellowfin Tuna. We were getting a few here and a few there thinking this is a perfect warmup for the action to come, when we got on a dab of fish that really wanted it in the face. This particular batch of fish was probably the best biting fish we've seen in a while - they were biting heavy line in a hurry. Everybody on board did a great job working together and following their fish and the teamwork payed off with a great stop. Pictured here is the mixed grade of fish we brought on board out of one of our short stops. With a few fish on the rig, we are now enroute to see if we can't get a few trophy fish to cooperate tommorrow. ![]() The Boys |

would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!!! ![]() Bringing the cows home What a beautiful morning - the sun was rising and gigantic tails appeared on the horizon. The American Angler arrived at 6:15am with the hopeful 300+ fish, which dwarfed the other magnificent over-100lb Tuna, and Wahoo, Dorado and Yellowtail that were caught on this 10 day trip, sponsored by Monte of M & M Custom Rods. Finally after what seemed like forever unloading, Capt. Sam put the huge fish on the scale, calling out an official weight of 302.1lbs. And after that excitement was over, he weighed the other jackpot fish which were spectacular in their own rights, weighing in at 210 and 180lbs - WOW. This gang was really a pleasure on the boat and the entire American Angler crew would like to extend a special thanks to Monte for sponsoring this trip and all the passengers on board - THANKS! THE LAST DAY OF TRAVELING IS BEAUTIFUL We stopped this morning and did a little bottom grabber fishing before breaking down all the rods for the ride home. The weather is just wonderful now and the boys are scrubbing down the rig. We had a nice trip with a variety of fish - Yellowtail, Wahoo, Dorado, Reds and Yellowfin Tuna. Giant Yellowfin Tuna bookmarked this trip as unforgettable; having a chance at those Cows on a 10 day trip is not common, to say the least. We are all very curious to hit the scales tomorrow and get the weights on some of the Big fish we have in the hole. We want to say a special thanks to Monte Parsons of M&M Custom Rods, we sure had a lot of fun with this gang. We are looking forward to fishing with all the guys soon again. THE WIND SEEMS TO BE GIVING US A BREAK After a bumpy ride up the coast last night, we spent the day at the south end of Cedros Island looking for some Yellows. We were fortunate and did catch a few nicer grade Yellowtail, so we are on our last leg of traveling up the line and the weather has backed off to a very nice ocean. The photo of the day is Charlie and John with two nice ones they caught today. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SMOOTH SAILING, The Gang |

WIND IS UP AND THE FISH ARE DOWN We worked up the line today in hopes of finding some kelps with maybe a few Wahoo or Dorado on them, but we were only able to find a couple of these paddies and there weren't many fish on any of them. We did manage to catch a handful of Dorado for the day. The weather is up right now so we are hoping that the wind will back off soon. We are going to fish for some Yellows tomorrow before we have to call it a trip. GOOD NIGHT AND NO MORE WIND, The Guys |

THE DAY OF THE BIG BOYS We have 15 Extremely Large, Beautiful fish on board tonight and are still pulling on one as I am writing this report. Today was one of those emotional days of fishing where there was a chance to hook a fish of a lifetime or be left on the side lines to watch; but from either aspect, it was inspiring. Look at this morning's preview shot of Dave Fusco with his 300lb + beast and you know that was a fish of a lifetime for him! Pictured here, Al Selover, with his YFT (that taped out at 169 lbs), is definitely show off material. And, not pictured, we added to this splendid tunnies collection, a jumbo that taped out at 200 lbs. Today was an event. But we need to close that gap to home, and are going to start running up the line tonight - the weather man is calling for a little wind, so off we go. A note to anybody coming on our upcoming trip: I highly recommend you bring an 80 lb rig in your bundle of rods, because if you get a chance at these Bad Boys you are going to need it. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND WE HOPE CHARLIE LANDS THE FISH HE'S PULLING ON. Our Lucky Day!!! We had the fortune today to have one of our anglers Dave Fusco land a cow Yellowfin that taped out at 303 lbs. GUESS WHO'S BACK IN TOWN Well it's funny how this whole fishing thing works sometimes; the area we fished yesterday just didn't produce any fish today. So in search mode we went, and what you know, the Big Boys are back. We got down in the area late in the day, but took full advantage of the time we had. Even though we know every day can be a different day, we are going to try for these Big Ones again tomorrow. GOOD STOP AND GO FISHING We had a very good day of fishing for Tuna; we got on them in the morning and stayed busy right up 'til dark. Most of the YFTs that we landed today were 20 to 50lbs, but we did lose a couple that were pushing the 100lb grade. Hopefully tomorrow we will have more opportunities for the big boys. PUT TOGETHER A FAIR DAY We started looking offshore as soon as the sun came up this morning. YANKING AND A CRANKING Today was a nice change of pace from the all-day-on-the-move type fishing we have done most of this trip. We had very successful Yellowtail fishing for the majority of the day. Photo below just having some 'tail fun are Chris Baca, Bill Kuehl and Rusty Sims with crewmember Nick. We started our first fishing day of the Annual Angler's Choice 11 day with less than ideal conditions. The morning greeted us with strong winds that were relentless throughout the day. The kelps that have held willing Wahoo, as of late, were fewer and less productive today. We DID manage to catch a handful of Wahoo as well as a number of nicer model Dorado. Tonight we are heading towards the Ridge, hoping for a change of pace. IS IT LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME? Not a cloud in the sky, not a breath of wind and not a ripple on the ocean gave us the ability to spot kelps, even small ones, from miles away, with each kelp holding its own little pack of eager-to-bite Wahoo. A scoop of sardines hitting the water creates an instant aquarium on the stern, full of free-swimming Dorado and Wahoo with only one thing on their mind--bite. Whats The Best Time Of Year To Catch Wahoo? That is one of the most common questions that we hear at the Fred Hall show every year when talking about eight to eleven day trips. When we thought about the gentleman with his arm resting on our booth table asking this very question, it made it very apparent what we ought to do our next day out here. Tomorrow we are going to enjoy the same world class Wahoo action that we have been enjoying for the previous two days. Because nothing gets the blood pumping through our brains more than the face of a 50 pound wahoo stopping a jig wound at full speed. So what is the best time of the year to catch Wahoo? That would be the 26th, 27th, and hopefully the 28th of October 2003. Our picture for the day shows a few of the victims and twenty-two sore right arms enjoying the flat calm weather. ![]() The Guys Oh and by the way - we could sure use a few more guys to join us on our 14 day expedition departing Jan. 10th - come on guys, we only need a few more to make it go and it's going to be a good one. Wahoo We traveled all night, began our day on a nice temp break, and started looking for kelps. We were blessed with beautiful-looking conditions and the guys really took advantage of it. Keith, Gregg, Gordan and Jimmy burned their eyeballs out and it payed off big with numerous kelps and steady Wahoo action. Through all the hooting and hollering, cut-offs and the other chaos associated with wahoo fishing, we ended up with 67 Wahoo and lots of Dorado of various sizes. The Thrill Of Victory And The Agony Of Defeat Once again we spent the day at the Rocks. It started out a little different than our typical day; as we started fishing for Wahoo, we had pretty good action. The feeling on deck was more of a fun carnival-type atmosphere, as there were many fish zipping all around, short bites and overall controlled pandemonium. It ended up with regular Jack O'Donnell as the Monster Wahoo King, as pictured. After all the fun and games, we put the anchor down and it was time to go to work. The tuna fish were boiling up on the chum before the anchor touched bottom. We had a steady one to four hooked up all the time, and for the people that got bites and successfully landed these trophies, it was a great accomplishment, but for those unfortunate few that couldn't get bit or suffered painful losses close to the boat, it was a true test of emotions. We had a great day and we are looking forward to another action-packed day tomorrow. ![]() Until Tomorrow, The Guys |

Earn It We spent the day at the stones sitting on the anchor fishing for trophys. We are very thankful for the opportunity to land some of these 100lb plus Yellowfin Tuna - some stories ended in success and some in defeat. There is decent sign of fish around the boat for most of the day, but it requires a lot of patience and perseverance to get a bite. It's easy to get discouraged, as it is tough to get a bite, and these fish are very tough to land - even on sixty pound gear. But when it all comes together, it is the reason we plan and prepare all that time to come out on a longer trip. Yesterday one of our younger regulars from the Pacific Queen, who now fishes with us here, had an extremely tough day with no fish - but stuck with it, with a good attitude - and it payed off in a giant way. Rob Perry hooked 7 and landed 6 of these big fish, ending up with one his best fishing days ever. ![]() Work Hard, The Guys |

The Start We started out the morning looking for kelps and it was almost too good to be true - we found one right away. The only catch was that there was nothing on it, and with the exception of a catch and release 350lb Blue Marlin... that was our morning. We got to the stones after lunch and saw pretty good sign of jumping fish and shortly afterwards got the anchor down. It was a perfect break-in bite, where we learned that heavy tackle was key. We had several heartbreaks, but after all was said and done, we ended up with several handfuls of big tuna and a couple of handfuls of Wahoo. Pictured are some of the guys enjoying a little bait-making, as we are all looking forward to tomorrow. ![]() Hoping For A Big Day, The Guys |

FLAT CALM, FUN AND YELLOWS Today was a nice change from the touch fishing we experienced at the Rocks - the Yellowtail fishing was phenomenal. We spent just a few hours at it and that was all we needed. We are going up the coast to finish the trip and will fish a few hours in the morning and then head it for home. The photo of the day is K.C. Brotherton with one of the nice ones he got today. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND EARLY DINNER TONIGHT! The Guys |

MOVING ON UP This morning was our last day on the Outside and its time to start our trek up the line. Once again we managed to get a few fish in the dark and after daylight we picked up the ground tackle and made a couple of sweeps with the Lures for some action on those Skinnys, who cooperated, and then we were off. We're going to spend tomorrow fishing for Yellows around Cedros Island. We have been able to put together a nice catch of quality fish in the last few days, so again we are thankful to have this grade of Yellowfin to make it all possible. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND THINK FORK TAIL! WE ARE STILL HANGING IN THERE We had a nice little bite first thing in the morning again, but after daylight these fish just had something else on their mind besides wanting to get caught. It was a long afternoon of waiting (with the exception of the Wahoo we picked on the anchor), before we finally got a shot right at dark for a few more of these Beautiful grade Tuna. We are going to fish the morning here and then take off for Cedros to break up the ride home. The photo of the day is some of the Boys with their morning catch. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND ITS TIME TO MAKE MORE SQUID. The Guys |

TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY The day started out with a bang! We were catching fish in darkness before the sun was over the horizon, then continued picking Tuna into the early morning, and today we had the best Wahoo fishing yet, which was a nice surprise. As far as the afternoon's activities ...things just did not go our way. There is still good sign of fish, we just had our share of bum luck. Anyway, we're going to give it another day and hope tomorrow is better for the Team. The photo of the day is Charter Master, Mike Farnsworth, with one of his nice Tuna. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND STILL NICE WEATHER! The Guys |

WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF SUNSCREEN! Just another beautiful day on the ocean, and the fishing is improving a little, as well. We had a notch better action today than yesterday - so between the weather and the fishing, we are going to give it at least one more day here. The photo of the day is Charlie Reynolds with one of the few that he caught today. Just look at the ocean in the picture, WOW it's nice out here. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SWEET DREAMS, The Guys |

WE LIKE FLAT CALM! Well we arrived at the crack of dawn, and made our first anchor drop. We picked up one nice Yellowfin for our morning bite, then it got slow. The current conditions were very slack here all day and the current or what we would call GOOD conditions did not happen 'til about five o'clock in the afternoon. Needless to say from then until dark, it was good fishing. So we are just beginning our stay here at the Rocks and are hoping for a longer window of GOOD conditions while we are here. The photo of the day shows some of the late afternoon action we had and as you see from the picture, we are enjoying a beautiful ocean. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND THE TROOPS ARE HAVING DINNER NOW. The Guys P.S. Jackie: message received, Happy Anniversary. Thought of you all day except while catching fish. Love you, John. |

JUST GETTING STARTED We decided to stop short, break up the ride down and try our luck at some Yellows. We spent the morning doing some yanking and cranking, then around 11:30, it was time to move on. We are traveling to the outside this afternoon to try our luck at those Trophys. We are going to stop at dark for squid - maybe we can put it to good us tomorrow. GOOD NIGHT AND WE ARE ENJOYING SOME FLAT CALM. The Guys |

BADFISH IS HOME! The boat returned this morning at 6:15am with a load of gorgeous grade Yellowfin Tuna, lots of fresh Yellowtail and a couple of Wahoo and Dorado to complete the mix. These Yellowfin averaged in the high 80-90lb's and during the jackpot ceremonies, 20 YFT's weighed in over 100lbs. See the jackpot pictures below - congratulations, guys! The entire crew again would like to thank Louis Papai of Badfish for sponsoring this great trip - we look forward to both of your trips next season. And thanks to all the anglers - you guys made it fun, you were a terrific group and we hope to see you all back again soon. ![]() 2nd: Bruce Inniss 114.8lb Yellowfin Tuna 3rd: Bob Chapman 113.9lb Yellowfin Tuna The boat departed again @ noon with the Mike Farnsworth charter. BOUND FOR HOME We tried to find that needle in a haystack taking the offshore route up the line ... it doesn't look like we will be trying for Albacore on the way down the line on our upcoming trip, (I DON'T THINK SO!). The Troops have all their rods broken down now and are in full relax mode before we arrive in the morning, when it's back to the grind. We had a wonderful trip with Yellowfin up to and over the 100 lb class and some Wahoo mixed in, and don't forget the awesome Yellowtail fishing the last couple of days. We would like to say a Big Thank You to Louis Papai from Bad-fish.com for sponsoring this trip - he sure had a lot of nice give away prizes! Also thanks to everyone else on the trip for being a part of this adventure with us. eta, 0630 THANK YOU, YOUR CREW: Sam, Gregg, Keith, Oscar & Oscar, Steve and Mitch |

IT'S OKAY TO LET THEM GO TOO! Today was another epic day of Yellowtail fishing. We started around the North end of Cedros Island in the morning and just after the sun came up, the Yellows started to show. After a couple of hours of good fishing, it was time to look for something else. We made our way around the Island and tried a couple of different spots picking a few Calicos here and there and then we found a better-looking area which had Yellows biting wide open. It was really great to see this bunch of guys have such a great time releasing fish - anglers were cutting the barbs off their hooks, making it was very easy to just lean over the rail a bit and take out a lure without hurting the fish whatsoever. The photos of the day are some fish being released and also Kevin and Rodger with some of the Calicos that they released as well. All in all it was a wonderful day of fishing and the weather is still Flat Calm. We are going offshore fishing in the morning, not really knowing what to expect, but we have nice weather and a little time to burn.
GOOD NIGHT AND THANK YOU DEAR LORD FOR LETTING US PLAY IN YOUR OCEAN, The Guys |

MORE YELLOWTAIL ACTION TO FILL THE DAY After a very pleasant night of sleeping in the lee of the Island, we picked up the anchor and ran over to Chesters Rocks and the only problem there, was that no one was home. So we just went fishing, and tried a couple of different spots, picking enough Yellowtail to put together another nice day of fishing. Tomorrow's plan is to try the North end of Cedros Island and target a better grade of fish. GOOD NIGHT AND WE'RE SLEEPING PEACEFULLY ON THE ANCHOR, The Guys |
|||||
|
FLAT CALM AT LAST.... We didn't start fishing til around 11:00 in the morning, but it was well worth the wait. We are fishing a new area this trip (and also on our last trip) that produced fantastic Yellowtail action and once again today it didn't let us down. Tomorrow we are going to fish Old Chesters Rocks and see if we can cash in on some of those Home Boys. The photo of the day is the gang doing their thing at the rail, and there was a lot of that going on this afternoon. The weather is beautiful up this way and we are enjoying that very much. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD SLEEPING ON THE ANCHOR! The Guys |

BYE BYE ALIJOS SEA YOU LATER We are on our way up the line after another day successful of Yellowfin fishing. Fishing at the Rocks the last few days has been more quality fishing rather than quantity - most any day you would see these nice fish boiling around the boat, which gave the feeling that any bait you pitched out, there was a good chance of hooking a big one. And there were Wahoo caught, to keep things interesting. They have downgraded Hurricane Nora to a tropical storm, nonetheless its a storm and getting closer, so we are sticking with the game plan and running up to Cedros Island for Fish, Bait and Fun. The photo of the day is Larry Knupp with one of his Jackpot contenders, for sure. ![]() GOOD NIGHT! The Guys |

GOING TO GIVE IT ONE MORE DAY, THEN TIME TO RUN. We have been very fortunate to put the beginning part of our trip together the way we have, with this wonderful grade of fish available at the Rocks. Today good luck was with us again, with our best day here yet. We are going to spend the morning here and then start running up the line and go try our luck for some Yellows. The photo of the day is Tom Kaye with one of two that he landed today - his first was a little bigger. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND WE ARE ALL DONE FISHING FOR SQUID NOW! The Guys |

STAYING ALIVE After a few fish at daylight, things didn't look the same, so we pulled the anchor and went on the hunt. After making a complete tour of the place, we made one more try on a little spot of fish - well, it paid off. We had steady action on these beautiful grade Yellowfin all afternoon; so we are going to give it another chance tomorrow and just see what happens. The photo of the day is Tom and Larry with just a sample of the fish they picked up today. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD FISHING, The Guys |

JUST GETTING STARTED We arrived at the Rocks around 1:00 in the afternoon. There are still nice Yellowfin here to be had and we are hoping they will bite a little better for us tomorrow. We are just getting our trip started, so we have plenty of time and are just going to play it by ear. ALL DONE AND BOUND FOR HOME! The weather last night and today has been absolutely beautiful for traveling up the line. We did wet a few lines this morning just outside San Carlos, for a few assorted bottom grabbers, and then it was time to break down all the tackle and call it a trip. We are looking forward to making it up to the scales to see exactly what the weight on these YFTs really are? The photo today is the whole Gang and at the time the picture was taken, we were on our North West heading, at full cruise speed - just to give you an idea of the ride we are enjoying. THE THEME TODAY WAS YELLOWTAIL After traveling all morning, we arrived below Natividad Island where we came across some nice schools of Yellowtail. We made a couple of long drifts that produced some very good action on Yellows: some came on the yoyo and a few on the bait. We then went around the corner to check out Chester's, and the conditions were not friendly, but we did manage to catch a couple of Yellowtail and nice Calico bass to go with it. The photo of the day is Bernie Melendez with star crewman, Keith a.k.a BEEF, with one of Bernie's Yellowtail. We are running up the line tomorrow, so we won't have a lot of time for fishing, but plenty of time for relaxing. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT, The Guys |

FAREWELL TO THE ROCKS We are running up the line tonight after another successful day of fishing, with that beautiful grade of Yellowfin tuna again. We have a little bit of time to burn tomorrow, so we are going to take a look at Chesters Rock in the afternoon. The photo is Ed, David and Karl with some of their Tuna. The weather is still very nice and it is going to be a wonderful ride up tonight. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND ALIJOS - WE WILL SEE YOU AGAIN, The Guys |

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES! Not only did we have great weather today, but also this fishing picked up quite a bit. The day started out a little on the slow side, but once we got position figured out, it was right. We had steady action on these beautiful grade fish from around 10:00 in the morning, until dark. These are some of the nicest grade of fish I have seen at the Rocks in many years, so we have no choice but to give it another day here! The photo of the day is John Genovese, with one of his YFT's. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT, The Guys |

WE'LL TRY IT ANOTHER DAY! We are going to stay here at the Rocks for one more day - there is still fair sign of fish with a few Wahoo mixed in, just to make it interesting. We started our day with with a short lived bite on the Tuna and then proceeded to move around for a couple of stops that produced Wahoo. Next we tried different anchor jobs for a few Tuna here and there and we finally did get a little snap right at dark. We'll see what happens tomorrow and take it from there. The photo of the day is Richard Johnson and the nice Wahoo he picked up this morning. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND IT'S DINNER TIME, The Guys |

WE MADE IT TO THE ROCKS We arrived right around lunch time and made a little tour of the place. Today the wind is up a little bit, but not too bad. Our first couple of anchor jobs didn't work out, but we got it down and stayed put all afternoon, once we got it right. The fish here are just a beautiful grade of Yellowfin tuna - 70 to 90 pounders - with a couple fish today over 100 pounds for sure. We are just starting our trip, so we have high hopes of staying busy here the next few days. Sentimental Today was probably the last day we're going to fish Albacore until next year, because after this trip, we start our 8 and 10 day season. Mixed emotions went through my head realizing what phenomenal fishing we had on them this year. Not that I'm the old salt, but this is by far, the best Albacore fishing that I've seen in my life. We took them for granted quite often this year, but today was one of those down days that really made you appreciate each and every one. Special thanks to the guys from Ken's Custom Reels - what a great group. Everyone worked together and had a good time, and we hope that everyone comes back next year. BOUND HOME! We arrived at the Breakers at San Martin Island at 0800 in the morning, we dropped the anchor and did not see any sign of fish there. So we picked it up and went looking. The next anchor job was just what we were looking for, from 0930 to lunch time it was good fishing for Yellowtail. The weather has been just beautiful all trip, and that hasn't changed today. We are on our way up the line now and everybody is enjoying an afternoon of relaxation. The photo of the day is all the gang after a great trip. FLAT CALM, SUNSCREEN, TUNA, WAHOO, YELLOWS, YES BABY! We arrived at the south end of Lupe at the crack of dawn. Our first anchor job wasn't what we were looking for, so we picked it and made a little move - Bingo, we stayed put 'til lunch time. Most of the Yellowfin we caught today were 25 to 35 lb grade class fish, with just enough better size fish to wrap up all the jackpot places. The afternoon was slower (as far tuna were concerned), but it gave us a chance to look around for some Wahoo, and find a few. The last anchor drop of the day produced some Yellows right before sundown, just to add a little variety to our day. We are going to run into San Martin Island in hopes of picking up some more Yellows tomorrow for a trip ending. The photos of the day are Ian Orr and Lynn Adams with Pair O' Wahoo, and Rick Mcpherson with his nice YFT - I think he's got first place wrapped up!

ONE STOP SHOPPING We shut the boat down on some meter marks around 0500 in the dark before daylight, and waited for the sunrise. We started hooking a few Albacore at first while everybody was still having their coffee. We would be dry for just a couple minutes, then hook a few more fish - this kept up 'til lunch time. It was just one of those all morning Plunkers, with a pretty good mix of Bluefin. Today's photo is one of our favorite lady anglers, Martha Bummer, with star crew member Keith at her side. We had a wonderful morning of fishing, so we are going to travel down to Guadalupe Island in hopes of some action on the Yellowfin Tuna and whatever else may be waiting for us there. The weather has been just beautiful the past few days and the sunscreen is out. ![]() GOOD NIGHT, THE GUYS |

OFF TO A GOOD START! We arrived on the offshore scene in the middle of the night and waited for the sun to rise. We picked a few Albacore right at the crack of dawn and proceeded to keep picking away at these nice ones. In the stops we would see a BFT down deep on the machines, but they were not willing to bite. However, as the day progressed, the Bluefin started to show themselves. We had a few different stops on the BFTs, stopping on both breezers and nice sonar marks, but for the amount of fish we were seeing - they weren't that eager. We still managed to have nice day on both Albacore and Bluefin. The photo of the day is Laney Hackman with one his Bluefin. We are going to try our luck here offshore again tomorrow, in hopes of getting in on some more of this action. ![]() GOOD NIGHT, THE GUYS |

SOME STORIES DO HAVE A HAPPY ENDING You couldn't have written this one any better - it was our day for those Bluefin. After a long night of traveling up the line from Lupe, we found the lucky school of BFT's and they wanted to get with it. JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE LUPE Well as we might have expected, today was not like yesterday, but not bad by any means. We tried our little Yellowtail honey hole in the morning and just got a sample of what we caught yesterday. The Yellowfin Tuna was pretty good scratch fishing but the Great White sharks found us today and were a little hungry for our fish. All in all not a bad day of fishing. The photo of the day is a couple of decades of crew members from the half day boat, "Matt Walsh", out of San Pedro. It's quite the honor to have them all on board fishing with us. Capt. Paul Medina was the guy that actually caught this fish. WE GAVE IT THE OLD COLLEGE TRY The day started with a stop on Albacore for 14 fish - all the nicer Grade, then the rest of the day we had scattered stops which consisted of 2 to 7 fish, but never did we see a school of those BFT's. So, we are going to continue on with our trip and fish Guadalupe tomorrow, then take it from there. There was still good sign of Albacore and a few schools of BFT's; there will be a day again when they want it! THE FINAL CHAPTER After spending the last two days driving around the ocean - it was a very nice change to actually stop the boat and catch some fish again. The fishing at San Martin Island was a lot of fun today and at one time during a bite, I counted 17 rods bent at once. The weather turned out to be just absolutely beautiful as well. All in all, we ended up having a very nice trip and we'll have a smooth ride home to top it off! Photo of the day is our buddy H.P., with one of his many Yellowtail he caught today. The no fish, fish report That's it in a nut shell. It's not that we didn't see any fish, but catching them was an entirely different matter. It was around 0430 that we stopped on a very big school of Bluefin who stayed around the boat for about a half an hour before just vanishing off the machines. After daylight, we got on the move and saw a couple other spots of Bluefin - one fish even came up and boiled for us. In spite of a lot of effort between us and the other long range boats, it was a down day. The weather is up a little, but should lay back down soon, says the weather man. We are going to shift gears here and fish the inside tomorrow - either offshore or at San Martin Island. Good night - it's dinner time, They Guys |

TODAY'S NOT LIKE YESTERDAY Well, we were here yesterday and are thankful for that. Today was a different day out here, to say the least. We still saw the sign of fish, but getting them to bite was a whole other story. We did manage to catch one 100 pound class fish today out of our couple of stops and we also had a few Albacore mixed in while we were drifting, pulling on the big ones that were hooked. JUST ANOTHER AT THE OFFICE First of all, we enjoyed a very beautiful day of weather and also just a phenomenal day of Albacore fishing. There are still several schools of Bluefin Tuna swimming around out here but, you really have to be "The Chosen One" to get one to stick with you. Tomorrow we are going to shift gears and be a little more selective and try for those BFT'S. The photos of the day have a couple of themes for the day, Jay Preston with his Fatso that weighed in at 35 lbs and some the afternoon snack action that was going on in the galley. Stanley Chin brought his own sushi chef along on the trip with him, Toyomi Koshu, who just happens to own his own sushi bar - "Little Tokyo". THE FINAL CHAPTER It's always nice to finish it off with a bang, but the last few days of fishing offshore has been more luck, than skill. Today we just did not find that needle in the haystack, but managed to pick at some of those Fatso Albacore. What A Pleasure What a pleasure it was to get into the lee of the big island after rolling around offshore for a couple of days - we took full advantage of it. We were very lucky to not only enjoy good weather, but we also had fun fishing on 25-40lb yellowfin tuna. Everyone aboard had a great time and really appreciated the island in her full glory. Tonight, we are heading up the line in hopes of obtaining the lucky horseshoe and get some kind of bluefin deal. Pictured below is one of our passengers, Dick McConihay, with one of his YFT. ![]() Hope to get lucky, The Guys |

Thankful We started out in the same zone as yesterday, where we enjoyed the good action on bluefin and albacore and had high hopes for more of the same today. We are sharing this area that we have been fishing, with our local overnight fleet, because that's where the best sign has been. It has been hit-or-miss type fishing, but we have been having fun and have been lucky, as far as catching is concerned - and it's been nice mingling with our old one day friends. Today was a different day, the weather was up a little and fishing was very slow for everyone. We decided to bail out for the Island in the afternoon and after listening to the final reports of the day, we couldn't help to think about how lucky we are for every single fish we have in the holds. The last island report was very poor, but that was a few days ago so we have our fingers crossed. Sorry no picture, but tomorrow is another day. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE LEE, THE GUYS |

The Best For Last We started in the same area where we had good Bluefin and Albacore fishing last trip. We felt confident that we found a fishy area for a grey bite, but instead of wide open fishing, we found the fish to be very uncooperative. In our morning bite, as well as most of the stops during the day, we found that the fish would lay under the boat and just flat out not bite. I don't care if you were using 10lb test and a horse hair leader, they just were not interested. The day was scratch fishing, with a few here and a few there, all the way up to about 5 in the afternoon. That's when we found a sonar deal of bluefin that wanted to play. We had steady action with as many as 10 fish hooked at once and the bite lasted until dark. So, we found ourselves ending up today with a successful and fun day of fishing. One of the last fish landed was an albacore caught by Bill Haproff, and processed by our very own Keith Hilton. ![]() BEING LUCKY, THE GUYS |

The boat returned this morning @ 6:15am with lots of Fresh Bluefin - they caught their limits of BFTs, mixed with about 100 Albacore. Brian, Gregg, Jimmy, Oscar, Keith, Sara and Steve want to thank the James Gang Hardware guys and extend a special thanks to charter master, David Samarin for organizing and putting together this most gracious group of gentlemen! Also, thanks to Brett Rankin for all the extra great giveaways from Eagle Claw and more. Also, please know that our satellite phone has been repaired and a new one installed, in addition to the repaired phone. This should keep communications from failing in the future. Check back next week and we should have some more pictures from this trip in the photo gallery - and again, we apologize to the families of James Gang for the disappointment of no fish reports on this abundant fishing trip.

We heard that the Guys had a wonderful day of Bluefin fishing today (one of the boat's best days of the season - from the information I could get out of the Bird). It also sounds like the weather is getting nicer in the last couple of days. Even though our satellite communication system is down, we still have our old fashion ways of getting the news. Tune in tomorrow for the final report and an ETA from the guys. To all the ladies back home - get the Jars ready, The Guys |

Communications are down, and unfortunately we are not been able to report the Angler's day. Hopefully, they will be able to either repair problem or get word to us tomorrow with trip status. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience. Check back tomorrow to see if we have a report for this 4 day James Gang Hardware Charter. |

Sakamoto is a Bluefin trip! The boat arrived at 6am with a beautiful catch of Bluefin, and a few Albacore and some Yellowfin. What a great group of guys! Check out the jackpot winners below. Again, the entire crew of the American Angler would like to thank all the Sakamoto passengers and a special thanks to Brett Edmondson for putting together this fun trip - look for his 4 day trip on our 2004 schedule coming out in a few weeks! ![]() 2nd: Henry Ross 75.3lb Bluefin Tuna 3rd: Jon Pedder 66.5lb Bluefin Tuna Honorable Mention; Brett Edmondson and one of his trophy-sized BFT The Angler departed at noon with another fine charter, James Gang Hardware, and their leader, David Samarin. We wish these gracious fishermen GOOD LUCK!! Today Captain Ed McEwen was laid to rest surrounded by family and friends. There were many eloquent speeches made and everyone had stories about how he had touched their life in one way or another. If wealth and success is measured by the amount of love and respect people have for you, Capt. Ed died a very, very rich man. We will miss him dearly and believe his heart and soul are still with us out there on the ocean. Bob Fletcher spoke about one of Eddie's last requests to him; to start a fishing program for kids - now called the Ed McEwen's Kids Fishing Fund. If you would like to get more details about this new program, call Bob Fletcher at 619 226 6455 or to make a donation - which Ed generously donated to before his passing, please send a check to: 1084 Bangor St. San Diego, CA 92106 The Guys |

A FEW MORE FOR THE SCORE BOARD A little different day, but no complaints. We still managed to get on a couple of schools today that wanted to bite a little. We also continue catching a few mixed-in Albacore, which makes us think perhaps these Albies are going to bite again soon, we hope. The photo of the day came from a stop where we picked up some nicer size Bluefin this morning - this grade fish was mixed in yesterday, too. Late in the day we had a stop on Yellowfin Tuna, giving us a sample of 16 to 28lb fish, just to add a little color to our catch. What a wonderful trip we had with the Team Sakamoto; Guys we would like to thank all of you for being a part of the trip this year and a special thanks to Brett Edmondson for making it all happen, once again. GOD BLESS THIS OCEAN The weather today was absolutely beautiful and the fishing was just phenomenal for Bluefin tuna. Most of the fish were 25 to 40 lb Bluefin, with a small percentage of fish weighing 50 to 65 lbs. We also picked up a few Albacore which were all those big Fatsos mixed in with our Bluefin stops. We have another day so we will see if our good luck continues for us. The photo of the day is Randy Guinn with our star crew member Keith. The gear Randy was using was a proto type 4/0 penn 113 H, which seems to be a very nice reel ... we think it's going to be a reel big hit at the tackle stores. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND KEEP THIS OCEAN NICE. WE ARE ON! After a long morning of traveling, we finally found what we were looking for, and just what we needed to finish this trip. We were looking for some Bluefin Tuna and that is exactly what we got -great fishing. From the photo of the day, you can see it was a lot of fun. Not to mention that the weather is coming down - so hopefully, things are on the up and up. We are going to arrive at the dock 0530 and we would like to say a special thanks to Mike Goldsmith for putting together a wonderful bunch of guys to come fishing with us. ![]() Thanks again Mike, Sam, Gregg, Jimmy, Keith, John, Mitch and Steve Good Night and get ready for dinner. |

A NICE DAY AT THE LUPE What a great change in weather from yesterday: put on your sunscreen and shorts and let's catch some fish - and a very fun day we had, at that. We arrived around 0900 and started picking at the Yellowfin Tuna as soon as we got here. It was steady action 'til after lunch and then just before calling it a day, there were a few more stops to be had. The fish that are being caught out here are mostly 20 to 35 lbs, with a few bigger, and a few smaller. The photo of the day is Jimmy and Jeff, just enjoying the day. Tomorrow, we are going to run up the line and wrap things up. The weather man is calling for better weather tomorrow! ![]() GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT, The Guys |

WET AND WINDY There will be a day soon when the weather man is going to be nice to us again. As far as the fishing was concerned, we had a fantastic day of Albacore fishing - well I should say a fantastic morning and a long afternoon. The day started off with a bang, we had a couple of stops where they were really biting, but by 8:00 a.m. those Albies just weren't acting the same. We would stop on some good meter marks for only a few fish, then that would be it. We still finished the day with a good catch of fish. We are going to get out of the weather and spend a day at Gaudalupe Island tomorrow, then come back up here the following day to finish the trip. The photo of the day is the gang - warm and dry, ready for dinner. We also have sad news for those who have not heard. Today we lost one of the Greats in sportfishing history, and a good friend - Captain Ed McEwen passed away this morning. He is a legend in this industry, was a k
