Summary of the 2002 season We would like to just say "Thank You", to all of you anglers that made our season such a success. This was an interesting year of fishing with a lot of new anglers that we have never fished with before and quite a few that we had fished with in the past. We are looking forward to the fishing with all of you again in the 2003 season.

We arrived this morning with a very nice catch of Yellowfin Tuna, 60 to 80 lbs,
Wahoo - up to 60 lbs - and again this trip, Jumbo Yellowtail (several in the 40 lb
class and 3 fish weighing over 50 lbs.). What great trip for quality fish!

NICE YELLOWTAIL FISHING Plenty of Yellowtail action at San Benitos today - the fish ranged from 16-25lbers, and the weather was beautiful fishing in the lee. We are going to run up and see if we can catch an Albacore tomorrow to top off this already very well-rounded trip. We're having a great time. ALBACORE?! Sam and Brian |
FLAT CALM, SUNSHINE, AND MUCHO KELPS Well we had a very fun day fishing Wahoo and ended the day with a total of 21, after looking at several kelps. One of the first kelps we stopped on, held our biggest hit -8 Wahoo. Boy, this is going to be easy, we thought. Not! - after hitting a bunch more kelps throughout the day, we scratched the rest of our fish. The weather is fantastic - flat calm, and it is just an absolute pleasure to be out on the ocean. The photo of the day is Ray Stapp with his Phat Skinny that he picked up trolling by one of the Kelps today. We are on our way up to San Benitos Island, in hopes of some Yellowtail action to finish up the trip. ![]() GONNA GO TRY THE DIRT SPOT! Sam and Brian |
THANK YOU, ALIJOS ROCKS, FOR A GOOD TIME THIS YEAR What a great way to finish off our season, fishing at Alijos Rocks. We could not ask for a better ending to this day. The weather was just beautiful and the fishing was fine. We had fair fishing on those nice grade Yellowfin Tuna and the highlight of the day was 3 Yellowtail over 50 lbs, which happens to be the photo of the day. We will start from left to right - Mike Rayner 50 pounder, Jeff pearlman 54 pounder and Eric Hu 55 pounder. Anyhoo, we are going to fish kelps tomorrow with high hopes of getting some more Wahoo. ![]() BOMBERS STAND BY ON THE BOW! Sam and Brian |
ANOTHER FUN DAY ON THE BANKS! No complaints here, today was pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday. About the only thing different, was the Squid fishing - it wasn't as successful last night, but we are hoping that will turn around tonight. Today's action started around 8:00 o'clock in the morning again and at times throughout the day, we would have 1 to 3 fish hooked at a time and then we would go dry for a little bit and then hook a few more . . . (you get the picture) and by the end of the day, we had some nice quality Yellowfin and a few Yellowtail in the 40 lb class again today. We are going to spend one more day here, then go looking for Kelps, in hopes of getting another shot at some Wahoo. The photo of the day is Star lady angler, Dawn Radford - all the way from Canada - with one of her Tuna. ![]() SQUID - SQUID - SQUID - WE NEED SQUID! Sam and Brian |
THE ACTION STEPPED UP TODAY Clear skies and sunshine was the theme when the sun came up. We started picking fish earlier this morning then we did yesterday. It started around 8:00 a.m., and we seemed to have flurries of bites throughout the day. It was a productive day of fishing, to say the least - our catch was a combination of Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail. We are going to spend another day at the Rocks, maybe two, before deciding to move on with our trip. The gang seems to be having a good time, so we will see what tomorrow brings us. The photo of the day is Chris Cruger posing with one of his Tuna Fish, (I think I used to see this guy in a commercial when I was a kid?) ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND THINK TUNA FISH. Sam and Brian |
MORE SHOW THEN GO! Today we had high expectations (that's normal for us), but the fish were acting a little touchy. They were boiling around the boat for 3 hours before we had hooked our first tuna of the day, which was around 11:00 in the morning. We still ended up scratching some very nice Yellowfin and even had some Yellows in the 40 lbs class. We are hoping that these Tuna fish bite a little better tomorrow. We had wet weather today - it rained on us all day but, lucky for us, there wasn't any wind to match it. Tomorrow is another day and we are going stick it out here and see what happens in the morning. Here is a picture of veteran Morro Bay fisherman, Ken Volk, with a nice YFT on his first ever 10 day trip! ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT. Sam and Brian p.s. Ken says hi to the Wild Horse Gang. |
OFF TO A FUN START Today was a day of bonuses. While traveling down in the morning, we noticed a good water break and just happened to catch a glimpse of a marlin jumping next to the boat. We took this as good sign to start looking with our glasses. A half an hour later, Trevor spotted one of the largest kelps of the year. We felt that even though it was 69 degrees, there was still a chance for Wahoo, and there was. They were really licking - in two drifts, through all the casualties and lost jigs, we managed to put 16 Wahoo and plenty of Dorado, for those who wanted them, on the boat. We continued and got to the Rocks in time for a fair pick of nice Yellowfin and a few of those nice quality Yellowtail we all dream about. Pictured below is, Jake De Angelis, with one of those beauties. Also pictured, "the guys" with their Skins. Nice way to start the trip!!
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT AND DREAM OF BIG YELLOWS. Sam and Brian P.S. Dan, flat calm weather and plenty of exotics. Rob and Jake. Chris got Whooed. |
The boat arrived this morning a little shy of 6am and began unloading their catch
from an 11 day adventure.
These passengers caught several fish in the 70-80lb class, a 95lb jackpot tuna and
everything was nice grade.
During the trip, they had to bide their time because certain windows in the day
were better than others - but in the end, they came home with fantastic quality -
and the weather was fabulous the entire trip, icing on the cake.

JACKPOT WINNERS 1st James Schroeder 95.4 lb Yellowfin Tuna 2nd John Metcalf 88.0 lb Yellowfin Tuna 3rd Armando Castillo 82.4 lb Yellowfin Tuna (and his 71.3 lb Tail) Honorable mentions Rick McPherson with his 72.1 lb Fat Boy and Ron Kaufman with his 64 lb Skinny! GOBBLE GOBBLE..... Sam and Brian |
PICTURE PERFECT END TO A PERFECT TRIP Today we fished for Yellowtail before running up the coast. Another beautiful day of weather to finish our trip. In the morning, we were making drifts and catching most our fish on the yoyo jigs, but by mid morning we got on a bunch that came up on top and gave us a nice little show. By lunch time, we called it a trip and ended the morning with a good number of Yellows, 15-20 lbs - with a few a bit bigger. All in all, we were very blessed with good weather and a little bit of Luck to make a wonderful trip. We will arrive in San Diego at 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning and will take some time to spend with our families over Thanksgiving then back out for our grand finale of the year - our 10 day, Thanksgiving Special. So check back with us when you're enjoying leftovers for more live fishing reports. ![]() HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND REMEMBER, DON'T EAT TOO MUCH.(YAH RIGHT...) Sam and Brian |
FLAT CALM AND SUNSHINE. Today we had perfect weather and great water conditions - it all looked good, but this is still called fishing and fish we did, we just didn't catch a whole bunch. The day started on the bottom end of the Ridge and we worked our way up to the 23 fathom spot, with a few Wahoo to show for our efforts. In the afternoon, we bombed offshore for a stab at finding the Lucky kelp but it just wasn't out there for us today. We are running up the coast tonight to fish Yellows in the a.m. The photo of the day is Ron Kaufman with the toad Skinny that he bagged this morning - nice fish. ![]() ONWARD AND UPWARD. Sam and Brian |
A CHANGE OF PACE. Rest and relaxation was the name of the game today. We spent the day offshore, looking for kelps and were fortunate enough to find a couple that were holding fish. A nice mix of Wahoo and Dorado were there for the taking, depending upon what they wanted to fish for. The Wahoo Bombers in the bow managed 19 Wahoo and the Dorado fisherman caught enough for an enjoyable dinner when they get home. The weather was absolutely epic, which made travel time between Kelps perfect for book reading and naps. We are on are way to tank up on Greenies, with hopes of putting them to good use on a few more Wahoo on the Ridge. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND DREAM OF FISH. Sam and Brian |
THANKS FOR THE GOOD TIME, AND OFF WE GO! Well the Rocks was a success - we caught nice quality fish while we were there, so off we go to The Ridge, hoping to find some Wahoo. (It doesn't sound like it's going to be a lead pipe cinch). We are going to start offshore in the morning, and just take it from there. The photo of the day is of Armando Castillo (left) and Rick Mcpherson (right); check these Fat Boy Yellow's that they caught today that weighed 69-70lbs on the hand scale - Fish of a lifetime. The Gang down below has the night off from fishing bait.(mackerel tomorrow night though, ha ha!). We have our fingers crossed for tomorrows venture - sea you later. ![]() GOOD SLEEPING TONIGHT Sam and Brian P.S. I don't know who those other two guys are in the picture? |
BIGGER FISH TODAY No complaints here - more sunshine, more flat weather and we caught some fish to boot. Another fair day of fishing, we finished the day with some nicer Yellowfin Tuna and a few Yellowtail. The difference today, were the grade of the Tuna; it looked like we had more fish that were pushing 75 lbs and a few on the kite around 85 to 90 lbs. All in all it was good scratch fishing. We are going to stick it out one more day here before we run to the inside and look at The Ridge. The photo of the day is our fearless leader, Rich Jenkins - with a little before and after. We were very lucky and got our squid right after sundown tonight, so it's 8:00 o'clock now and the troops are resting.
GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT. Sam and Brian |
COPPERTONE, FLAT CALM AND TUNA. Wow, what beautiful weather - we're running out of sun block. As for the fishing, today is a little different than yesterday, although you wouldn't think so by the final tally. We ended up with 47 Yellowfin Tuna and 28 Yellowtail for the day. Most of our tuna came late in the afternoon, (they got spunky from 3:00 o'clock 'til dark), where as yesterday, it was just a pick type of bite. Anyhow, we are going to stay here one more day before we move on with our trip. The photo of the day is Jim Porter, a.k.a, P.K. and Mike Beckett. Actually, P.K. caught the fish - Mike was just there at the right Kodak moment. ![]() HOPE FOR MORE NICE WEATHER. Sam and Brian |
ANOTHER FINE DAY ON THE BANKS! Day two of fishing: we made a couple of moves around the Rocks without much activity. About 9:00 a.m., things started looking up - we were seeing a little bit, began hooking a few, and by 1:00p.m., we were keeping a steady one to three going. We ended the day with 43 Yellowfin Tuna and 12 Yellowtail. These Tuna are running anywhere from 45 to 65 lbs. and the Yellows are 20 lb average. We are going to fish here again tomorrow, and then just take from there. Photo of the day is our Star Angler, Mark Conway, with one of the Tuna he caught today. The gang is having dinner right now and we still have very nice weather - hope for more good luck in the morning. Good Night. ![]() WE WANT SQUID ! Sam and Brian |
LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Day 1 of fishing: nice afternoon at The Rocks. We arrived at noon time and the weather is beautiful here, (once again), and it looks like this could be fun fishing. By the day's end, we landed 24 YFT's, 1 Yellowtail and a Wahoo - not bad for a half day of fishing. We're hoping for some more Squid tonight - kite candy - but that Moon sure is bright. Our photo of the day is Glenn Bummer with one of the Tuna he picked up today. ![]() THINK SQUID THINK SQUID THINK SQUID Sam and Brian |
The boat moored this morning at 7am with quality Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Yellowtail and Wahoo. Jackpot pictures are posted below and check back for more trip pictures, courtesy of Jeff Gaebel - thanks, Jeff, we appreciate your help. Sam, Jimmy, Trevor, Gregg, Tony, Sara and Taka want to thank all the passengers on this 11 day trip for a great time!! The boat leaves tomorrow for another 11 day - Turners Rod and Reel. We're thinking the fish are going to be a little hungrier this trip and are itching to get back down there. We'll get back at you in a few days. Jackpot photo, courtesy of Bill Roecker - THANKS!!
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st Jeff Gaebel 110.5lb Yellowfin Tuna 2nd Tom Riette 96.8lb Yellowfin Tuna 3rd Dennis Bryant 96.7lb Yellowfin Tuna Honorable mention Frank Tristan with his 118.7lb Yellowfin Tuna Sam and Brian |
Boat will arrive tomorrow, Tuesday Nov. 12 at 7:00am. See you then! GOOD NIGHT Sam and Brian |
After a long night of traveling up the coast, this morning we stopped and soaked a few yoyo jigs and it was pretty good Yellowtail fishing. They were straight Iron fish - not one on bait. It was steady action till about noon, then they shut down. So, we are back on the road again, starting to head up the line. We will arrive Tuesday morning and depart Wednesday for our Turners Rod and Reel 11 day trip. GOOD NIGHT Sam and Brian |
We had some weather this morning on the Ridge, but managed to catch a couple of handfuls of Yellowtail and a few small Tuna. We have been traveling all afternoon, trying to get to the "hot" Yellowtail grounds above, for tomorrow. There are reports of good weather there, but it's been a pretty choppy ride to our destination. GOODNIGHT AND HANG ON Sam and Brian |
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We are done trying for these nicer Yellowfin Tuna. There is going to be a day soon when these fish are going to get with it! After another very long day, right before dark we finally had a opportunity to catch some Tuna. We ended up landing 14 nice Yellowfin before darkness came. The weather is still very nice - we got that going for us. It is time for us to start making our way up the coast, so we are going to look offshore again in hopes of a chance for more Wahoo and spend our last day trying for some Yellowtail. Our folks have been very patient the last few days with this tough Tuna fishing we have had to deal with. The photo of the day is John Stuemke with a nice one that he picked up this afternoon. ![]() GOODNIGHT Sam and Brian |
WERE NOT GIVING UP YET! Another very frustrating day on the banks. There are plenty of nice Yellowfin Tuna here, but we are sure having a tough time getting them to bite our hooks. Today, most of the Big Fish came off the kite - your chances of getting a bite on a sardine was slim to none. The weather is fantastic and there is no shortage of fish, so there is HOPE and we could still have that big day. The highlight of our day was the couple of fish we landed over 100 lbs. Today's photo is Jeff Gaebel with his tuna, caught on a sardine. Jeff is also letting us use his camera this trip, while ours is in the shop and we thank him. We are going to get back on that horse tomorrow and give it all we got! ![]() THAT'S ALL FOLKS - GOOD NIGHT. Sam and Brian |
WE ARE READY WHEN THEY ARE! Well, there were a couple of good things to say about today, Limits of Tanning and Limits of Looking. As far as the catching was concerned, that was a little on the slow side. Without a doubt, there is plenty here, where we are fishing - but getting them to bite is another story. So, we have high hopes that our day is coming soon. Photo of the day is of our buddy Cliff Joralmon and crewmember Trevor, with one of his nice Yellowfin Tuna, that he picked up this afternoon. As for the weather, it doesn't get any better than this. ![]() PLEASE FISH PLEASE FISH PLEASE FISH Sam and Brian |
A BIT MORE ACTION TODAY. Today we fished kelps, and I would have to say, it was a success. We managed to find two kelps that made our day. I was very impressed with the grade of Dorado's - 20 lb average, with some in the 30 lb class. We also had 36 Wahoo to go with all the action. and it sure seemed if you stuck with fishing the bombs, that was key, to catching them. Tomorrow, we are back in Tuna Mode and will fish the banks below Mag Bay for a few days. We have high hopes of Trophy Size Tuna. The attached picture is John Gaebel(left) and Bobby Chapman(right) with a sample of the Skin's caught today. ![]() HOPING FOR BIG ONES! Sam and Brian P.S. To Eric: "The boys were thinking of you during the Wahoo bite. They did good!" |
THE BIG HIT NEVER CAME. A very tough day of fishing today. We had the same conditions as yesterday, and started hooking fish at about 8:00 o'clock in the morning, but by lunch time, it shut off. We then made a couple of moves with no luck, and so are on the move tonight, heading in to fish Kelps tomorrow. We did manage to put 14 nice Yellowfin tuna on board for the morning. DREAMING OF KELPS LOADED WITH SKIN! Sam and Brian |
JUST GETTING STARTED! We arrived at the rocks at noon thirty, got the anchor down and started hooking
a few fish. It seemed like we got here on the tale end of things. Needless to say,
we ended the day with 14 nice Yellowfin and a couple of Dorado's.
Our photo of the day is of Scott Haberman with one of his Trophy's for the day.
We are going to be here tomorrow - so we hope for good luck.

The Angler arrived at 6am and the Anglers unloaded their catch. This trip was
highlighted by World Class Yellowtail fishing, with the monster, caught by Ross Deardorff,
weighing in at 78.6lbs!! There were also 2 trophy Yellowtail at 68 and 67 lbs, both
caught by Steve Schneblin. There were also a handful of 50 lbers brought on board
this day. John Collins says it is the finest Yellowtail fishing he has ever seen -
(and he's seen a few). Note: Most of these Tails were caught flylining the giant squid.
Equal to the fantastic Yellowtail fishing were the quality Yellowfin Tuna caught
this trip, the largest weighing in at 112 lbs. Throw a few Wahoo in the bag, largest
caught by Richard Nakanishi at 66 lbs and what an absolutely awesome 10 day trip
Captain Brian had.

Check back for progress report on this 11 day adventure.... THANKS EVERYONE! The gang |
Last night we endured a choppy ride up from dorado land to Hippolito Pt. and awakened
to flat calm weather and biting yellowtail. This group of guys have been really laid back
which has made it not only a good fishing experience, but a real vacation. We tried a few
different spots on the coast and found a little bit cooler water and had varying results
from a few yellowtail to being overrun by bonito. We called it a trip in the afternoon and
now we are enjoying nice weather on the way to the barn.
This has been an awesome trip highlighted by trophy fish - especially the MONSTER [happy halloween]
sized yellowtail caught at the rocks. See you soon.
|
We enjoyed a day of offshore fishing to the tune of no wind and 76 degree water.
We were lucky enough to find aquarium type kelps that were loaded up with
B**l slappers (Big Dorado's) and a few Wahoo. Frigate birds helped us out by being
our eyes in the sky. Tomorrow we are headed into the beach to look for a few Yellowtail
as a nice way to finish up the trip.
|
Today was our final day at Alijos Rocks. We spent from daylight until lunch time
once again picking away at 60-90 lb. tuna and 18-40 lb. Yellow Tail. We left to make
room for some of the other guys because the Rocks have been very good to us already.
Tomorrow we're going to be looking around off-shore in the hopes of finding
a nest of Wahoo, and a few Dorado. We are all going to enjoy the beautiful weather
and an afternoon nap.
|
YEE-HAA! This morning we had plenty of good grade Yellow Fin Tuna, and some
"World Class" Yellow Tail fishing. The majority were mostly in the 30-40 lb. class,
with more than a handful in the 40-50 lb. range and several that are going
to tip the scales at right around 60 lbs. They bit anything we threw; the chunked squid,
the live squid, and the 'dines. For the first few hours this morning it was
Katie bar the door. We also had a few jumbo Dorado's. We're still having problems
downloading the pictures, but haven't given up quite yet.
|
GOT SQUID? We didn't give a report last night, because we were up late making squid. We spent the night on the anchor again and woke up with enough wind put the balloons away and still fish the kite. We have a steady bite on a good grade of Yellow Fin and a couple handfuls of 40 lb. class Yellow Tail. We weighed one at 48 lbs. Check in with us tonight for a report on todays fishing. Thanks, "The Gang" |
FANTASIZING OF FLIERS ! Last night it took us a few hours to tank up on squid and a few flying fish. The squid wasn't as productive as we would have liked it to be, however every flying fish put up on the kite was a bite. We sat on the anchor all day and enjoyed a slow but steady pick of 60-90 lb. Yellow Fin Tuna. The group is very laid back, with no more than eight people fishing at a time. I guess you could say that this is truly a fishing vacation. We will see you all tomorrow with some pictures from Sara. (We sure miss Sam's technical expertise). Thanks for checking in, The Gang |
We arrived at the rocks right after lunchtime and saw decent sign of scattered jumpers. Our main goal for the day was to basically get a lay of the land because there were three other guys already here. We hooked quite a few fish, had our share of casualties, but managed to put a few nice fish aboard. Tomorrow we hope to be in position alpha - as some of the other guys are leaving. See you tomorrow The guys |
Today wer'e just rolling down enjoying some beautiful traveling weather. Our plans include a short stop to try and catch a few squid tonight and on to alijos rocks tomorrow around lunchtime
|
We arrived back home this morning at 6:15 a.m. from a very successful 10 day trip.

IT'S ALL ABOUT GIVE AND TAKE. This afternoon we had a lot of fun just releasing fish. After a very successful trip, it was one of those times to enjoy a different way of fishing, that we all should sit back and look at once in a while. To say the least, it was good fishing on good grade Yellowtail and a few nice Calico Bass - mixed into make fun. We are enjoying a nice dinner here on the anchor tonight, before we take off for home. Tonight's photo's are of our STAR crew members Tony and Gregg showing off their style of releasing these fish. So a special thanks to Luc of Angler's Choice for being just a great sponsor of this trip. We will be home at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

THE PARTY'S ALMOST OVER. We had a very relaxing day, here at the Rock's. The weather has come down and is very nice. We have had a
great trip and everybody is just kicking back. The fishing today was just fine, a little shot on those Nice Yellowfin
and also we did a little trolling for Wahoo - with a couple of stops to break up the day. We are running up the line
tonight and will stop at the north end of Cedro's Island to mix up the ride and then Homeward Bound. Today's
photo is of Edgar Garcia and he's wondering why he thought it would be a good idea to hook one of these
tuna on his Long Rod.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED TRY TRY AGAIN! A little different here than 4 days ago, nice weather, a few Wahoo and fair Tuna fishing. We started hooking Tuna about 8:00 in the morning and stayed fairly steady most of the day. The Yellowfin that are here at Rock's are of a very nice grade of fish, ranging from 50 to 80 lbs with a few pushing into 90 to 100 lbs. We will be here tomorrow, to hopefully catch some more of these nice fish, to finish our trip off. Our photo of the day is a picture of our favorite lady angler (all lady anglers are our favorite) Ms.Darlene Clemente with just one of her nice Yellowfin tuna that she boated today. ![]() GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT. We had tough working conditions today due to the weather, but still managed to
pull off a nice morning of very good fishing on the Yellowtail and a great
afternoon on the tuna. We'll be kelping tomorrow.
|
Well, anything is better than yesterday. We had a great day of fishing, it started out a little slow but ended with a bang. It was very good Mahi Mahi fishing and we managed to catch 25 nice Wahoo to go with that. So we are going to try for some Yellowtail and maybe, if we are lucky, a few tuna. The photo attached is of our fearless leader Luc Ofield of Angler's Choice, with one of his Wahoo for today.

The American Angler arrived at the dock this morning at 6:40am. Everybody went
home with great quality Lupe Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail.
The Angler would like to begin by thanking John Lloyd of
Zuker (thanks for the knot-tying seminar) and Danny Kadota of G-loomis and Aftco for
their generosity - there were amazing give-aways this trip! And, these guys were there
for the passengers, sharing their knowledge and tackle, to help all catch fish. Jackpot winners

ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END. Not much as far to report for our final morning here at the north end of Guadalupe. NICE YELLOWFIN TUNA! Today we are still here at Guadalupe Island and the fishing was great! The Yellowfin tuna were with us all day and we ended up with a count of 88 very nice grade fish. We also had 2 yellow tail reeled in today. We're having a great trip with perfect conditions, and look forward to the rest of the trip! A special thanks to sponsor Zuker Lures & G-Loomis Rods. Lookin for more big ones tomorrow!Sam and Brian |
OUR PATIENCE PAID OFF! After a long day of what I would call very slow fishing we finally got the hit we had been waiting for. We arrived here at Guadalupe Island right after daylight, as soon as we anchored up a few fish started to bite. That was very short lived to say the least. It was one here one there type fishing. But we would see fish boiling around us all day as well. Around Five o'clock we set the anchor for the sundown bite. And it was a late hit for sure. We actually did not really start gettin em till the sun was over the Island. The final tally was 37 Yellowfin tuna and 6 yellowtail for the day. Attached photo is of Rob Perry and Jake De Angelis with a couple of their jumbo's.![]() p.s. Rob says, "this one's for you, babe!" And Jake says hi, too. Sam and Brian |
We chose to start our trip in the Albacore area. We shut the boat down in the middle of the night and as the sun came up, we landed 1 Bluefin Tuna and a couple of Albacore. Shortly after that we had a stop where we caught 31 fish, real fast. At this point in time I thought that we were in em (that's what I get for thinking) We drove around for another several hours, for not much. By 2:00 p.m. I had enough of this, We had to start thinking about tomorrow. So off we go to Guadalupe Island - our arrival will be shortly after daylight. To make a long story short, we picked up 54 Albacore and 1 Bluefin for our efforts. GOODNIGHT AND DREAM OF BIG ONESSam and Brian |
The Angler arrived this morning at 6:30am with beautiful Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail and some Albacore. The entire crew of the American Angler wants to thank Gary Kimura and Kimura Tackle for a great trip! Check out jackpot winners below - pictures to follow. The boat will be taking off at noon again. Zuker Lures and G Loomis are sponsoring this 6 day adventure - it should be a fun one.
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st Gale Ragan 87.4 lb Yellowfin Tuna 2nd Joe Anderton 71.2 lb Yellowfin Tuna 3rd Rand Jackson 69.9 lb Yellowfin Tuna Sam and Brian |
Today we had a very long day, but got a few Albacore out of it, 58 12-20lbrs and are on our way home. Tomorrow's ETA is 6:30am. Thank you, Kimura tackle for a great time. Check back then for jackpot winners and trip pictures. KIMURA TACKLE IS ON THEIR WAY HOME. Sam and Brian |
Our fun meters are pegged out on this place. We ended up catching 43 Yellowfin tuna, all of the nice size models today. This was very tough fishing for our gang - what I mean by that is, it was tough to get a bite. There were plenty of fish around the boat all day, just not biting very well. We are going to run up the line tonight to fish offshore tomorrow for some Albacore and maybe a shot at some of those BFT'S (we hope). In our photo of the day is Henry Vanberkum - no, that's not a 20 pounder he's holding, that's just one of the average fish we've been catching (note the size of Henry's hands). We hope for a big hit tomorrow, so we will sea what happens.
NO BAIT FISHING TONIGHT. Sam and Brian |
NOW THIS IS MORE LIKE IT! A little better action today here for us. We ended the day with 48 nice Yellowfin tuna and 11 Yellowtail. When you take into consideration what we caught, under the type of conditions that these guys and gals had to fish in today, we were very happy with the final tally. It was wind against current, very difficult to get your bait away from the boat, to have a chance to even get a bite. We are going to fish here again tomorrow, and hopefully the conditions will be little more in our favor. Well, as for our Star Anglers of the day, we have Art Campbell and Gale Ragan posing with their trophies. I think Gale's fish is one of the money fish for sure. Well, sea ya later. P.S. To son Ethan - your Daddy misses you, Elisa and DADDY can't wait to see you (ah yea!)
CATCH BAIT CATCH BAIT CATCH BAIT! Sam and Brian |
BETTER LUCK TOMORROW Well we sure thought we were in em! As we arrived here at Guadalupe the fish were boiling in the chum line at our first spot that we tried. As soon as the anchor was set we started hanging fish and this lasted for a couple of hours. By no means wide open, but we had 1 to 3 fish going in this time frame. Well, after that it got very slow for the rest of the afternoon. We tried a few different spots of the Island, for nothing. Attached photo is when we were getting em! Hopefully tomorrow we can get pictures of some fish. We are going to fish here at the Island tomorrow, so we'll see what happens in the morning.
HOPING FOR A BIG HIT Sam and Brian |
A lot of smiling faces this morning as the boat unloaded their catch of hog Yellowfin Tuna, nice Yellowtail, and don't forget those first-day Albacore. Again, the American Angler crew wants to thank Ken Corwin and everyone from Ken's Custom Reels - we love having you on the boat. A good time was had by all, this trip. Check out jackpot winners below and pictures of trip will be up soon. We welcomed aboard Kimura Tackle Charter and left at noon. Sorry to say, Gary was not able to make the trip due to an employee's illness - hope he's feeling better. Check back tomorrow for reports on Day 1 Action. ![]() And on a special note, we wanted to let all the American Angler passengers out there who supported the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, this past weekend, that the fundraiser brought in over $93,000.00!! Judy and John Collins, who work tirelessly for this very important cause, wanted to thank everyone for their donations. A special thanks to Doug Rodger, who made the highest bid on an American Angler 7-day trip! Judy, John, Make-A-Wish and especially the children, want to thank you all for your generosity.
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st Ken Corwin 90.6 lb Yellowfin Tuna 2nd Gabriel Kovach 85.0 lb Yellowfin Tuna 3rd Larry Whatley 75.7 lb Yellowfin Tuna WE'RE ON OUR WAY! Sam and Brian |
THE FINAL CHAPTER After several hours of work last night, making sure we all had enough bait to use this morning, all our efforts came back to us. As the sun started to rise, the action started. The higher the sun got, the better the fish bit. At one point there for about one hour, It was just as good as It gits!. Both Yellowtail and Yellowfin Tuna were on the chew, it was really a lot of fun. We only had a few hours to finish up with, but it was well worth it. We ended up this trip at 10:00 A.M. with a total of 70 Yellowtail and 47 Yellowfin Tuna. What a great way to end our trip. A special thanks to Ken's Custom Reels, we really had a good time. And one of our last, but not least photos, here is Fred Belli with one of his nice Yellowfin that he picked up before it was time to say goodbye to the Island. Look's like about a 8:00 A.M. ETA back at the dock tomorrow, and then leave on a another 5 day at noon.
NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER. THE END Sam and Brian |
ANOTHER FINE DAY ON THE BANKS! Well, a little different day - most of our action was in the morning and by lunch time we had the bulk of our fish - to say the
least, it was a great day. We ended up catching 68 Yellowfin Tuna and 6 Yellowtail. I want to mention that the quality of
these fish is very nice. I would say the average size would be around 55 lbs and our jackpot fish, (so far) is around
80 to 85 lbs. This is some outstanding fishing to be had, for this time of year, on our 5 day trips. Attached photo
is a couple of Ken's Custom Reel Service and Repair THUGS Wes Cogan and Steve Carroll, showing off with
their new Tiburon Smart Shift Reels that they have been using on this trip. They seemed to be working out pretty
good, I think they are the reel of future.
HOPE TO FINISH WITH A BANG! P.S. Calico Bob and Fish Finger Fellow Allcoaster (who met on this trip and are bunkmates) are having a fantastic time and said "wish you were here". Sam and Brian |
Some times dreams do come true! We had a awesome day here at the island. Not to mention the weather was just fantastic and the fish wanted to play a little bit as well. We arrived at the south end about 8:00 A.M. and tried our first spot, the fish were a little slow to show their faces, but we seemed to keep somewhat steady throughout the day. We ended our day with a total of 63 Yellowfin tuna and 19 Yellowtail. Attached photos are two of our Star lady anglers Linda Slatton and Joyce Hackman shown with their Trophy tuna they landed today. We are going to fish here at the Island again tomorrow - so we will see what it has in store for us.
NO DREAMS TONIGHT, IT'S BAIT AND YELLOWTAIL HUNTING THIS EVENING. P.S. Bill say's Hi to Jen (He can't wait to see you). Sam and Brian |
What a long day ! Today's report is going to be in a play by play format. We arrived in the area at 01:00 A.M., and found a nice temperature break which had several sonar marks in this zone that looked very tasty to me. We picked up 5 Albacore out of our gray bite - may I remind you, this spot, (which I stopped on to begin with), was a very nice spot of Bluefin that did not stick with us.(Darn it #%&*). We started to look around the Zone for a few hours till our next stop, where we landed 55 Albacore. Well this is all right. Then it got slow, and we continued to motor around for several more hours for next to nothing. We ended the day with a total of 79 Albacore. We are in route to Guadalupe Island for tomorrow's activities. The weather turned out to be just gorgeous so we have high hopes for fishing tomorrow. To say the least we are very thankful for our one good stop of the day. GOOD NIGHT AND DREAM OF JUMBO YELLOWFIN. Sam and Brian |
ON OUR WAY The boat arrived this morning at 6:45am with some really fat fish. There were
plenty of nice Albacore, some beautiful BFT's, YFT's and don't forget those Yellowtail
that were picked up on day 3. The entire American Angler crew want to thank Sport Chalet -
what a great group of guys. Check out jackpot winners below - pictures to follow.
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st Wirt Nelson 84.5 lb Bluefin 2nd Steve Snoke 84.1 lb Bluefin 3rd Danny Salazar 83.2 lb Bluefin Thank you, Brad Lemoine and Sport Chalet! Brian and Sam |
WE GOT JUSTICE After a very long, hard day of effort - our patience paid off and we found our
needle in the haystack. We ended up the day with 48 Bluefin, all 60-100lb fish,
14 Albacore and one 50lb Bigeye. What an awesome way to end this Sports Chalet charter.
It's too bad that Brad had to miss Big Bluefin Trip #2 - ouch that hurts.
Jackpot winners and pictures will be posted tomorrow.
See, dreams do come true..... Brian and Sam |
Today we enjoyed a relaxing day of beautiful weather and good fishing at Guadalupe island. We ended up with 87 Yellowtail and 37 Yellowfin Tuna - up to 65 lbs. We're hoping that jackpot is not yet settled, because we are on our way back to the Bluefin and Albie grounds, hoping to kick some butt. Cathy, Lucille, Oddette, and Peggy - we slammed some biggies. Wish us Luck!!!Brian and Sam |
Good evening everyone. Our hopes of finding the big Bluefin today did not materialize. We had one of those days that we would like to put behind us, we had 18 Albacore for our efforts and no Bluefin. We are right on the full moon, this may be the reason for the poor fishing today. We are headed to Guadalupe Island to fish tomorrow, we should arrive there early in the morning. Wish us Luck!!!Brian and Sam |
Captain Brian just reported in on the fishing for the day. We had slow fishing in the morning, fortunately things picked up as it got later in the day. We ended up with 115 beautiful grade Albacore running 25-40 lbs, and two 80 lb. Bluefin. These are the biggest grade Albacore of the season, we are staying in this area tomorrow! He also mentioned 2 of the other boats in the area had 20-30 Bluefin each. A few of those were the jumbos weighting 100-130 lbs. Looking for JumbosWish us Luck!!! Brian and Sam |
HAPPY 1 YEAR OLD BIRTHDAY TO LITTLE SEAN KIYOHARA TODAY!
The boat hit the dock this morning at 6:30 with nice grade Albacore, big Yellowfin

everybody - sea you next time! Check out the jackpot winners below.
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st Gary Branscombe 70.3 lb Yellowfin 2nd Darren Tatsumi 65.1 lb Yellowfin 3rd Ron Brown 64.0 lb Yellowfin Honorable mention with his nice Albacore, Steve Branscombe WE'RE ON OUR WAY! Brian and Sam |
FINISHING UP WITH FATSO'S ! What a way to finish a trip. Today we had the best size Albacore we have seen all season for sure. Some of these fish weighed in at 35 to 40 lbs. To describe the way some of our stops were, they were W.F.O. A couple of times the Albacore were biting heavy line, no problem. To say the least, it was great way to finish a trip. Attached photo are a few of our happy anglers, showing off some of their Fatso's, Kevin O'bryant, Eugene Wong and Chris Cruger. We are going to arrive back at the dock at 06:30 - and departing on another 5 day trip, Sport Chalet charter!
GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT. Brian and Sam |
Fishing was a little slower today at Guadalupe. The passengers boated 25 of those 55-65lb Yellowfin Tuna and 14 nice, trophy-size Yellowtail. They are headed offshore for their last day of fun. Tight Lines, Brian and Sam |
FISHING THE LUPE! We had a fun day here at Guadalupe Island today, we picked up 44 nice Yellowfin Tuna and 12 Good Grade Yellow tail. The weather was just beautiful at the south end of the island. We caught the bulk of our fish in the morning but we saw fish all day long around the boat boiling on our chum but not to eager to bite our lines. There is still a good sign of fish here so let's hope tomorrow is going to be our turn. Photo Gary Branscombe and little brother steve-Guess who they call Moose? (the guy on the left)
Good night Happiness is sleeping in the lee! Brian and Sam |
GREAT ALBACORE FISHING TODAY! Limits of Albacore today. The weather has layed down and they saw Bluefin, just could not get them to cooperate. The boat is headed to Guadalupe. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Check back tomorrow - HEADED TO THE LUPE BRIAN AND SAM |

COMING HOME Another fine day of fishing for the American Angler. Limits of Albacore for the
passengers today - 15 to 25lb fish. It was a nice way to ease 'em off those
big Yellowfin Tuna they caught yesterday - so they just didn't have to quit cold
turkey!
WE HAD A GREAT TIME! BRIAN AND SAM |
MORE NICE YFT'S AT THE LUPE Another nice day at Guadalupe! The passengers caught 71 of those nice Yellowfin, most of these fish averaged 55-60lbs, but 3 of them tipped the scales at almost 100lbs. Tomorrow, they are going to fish Albacore - news is, the weather came down up above. Check back for results of last day fishing and get Monday morning's ETA. WE'RE GOING ALBACORE FISHING BRIAN AND SAM |
![]() Capt. Brian called from Guadalupe tonight to report fantastic fishing today. They had steady action all day long on the anchor, in the lee, fishing the YFT. There were one to three fish going all the time. These fish are quality - all in the 40 to 80lb class. They plan to spend another day there - to see if the fish want to play again tomorrow. Check back... GOOD TIMES TODAY CATCHING YFT'S BRIAN AND SAM |
![]() FAIR PICKIN'S Picked up our daily limits of Albacore and 2 Bluefin tuna. We scratched Albacore around 100 miles from home. Seems like old times fishing with the our old local Day and a half, two day boat counter parts. We left the Albacore area late afternoon, in order to get situated at Guadalupe Island for Yellowfin tuna action in the morning. We ended our day in a stop with a few Bluefin mixed in that produced the largest fish of the day caught by, lucky lady angler Gail Orr - assisted by ace deckhand Tony Villasenor. This Bluefin tipped the scale at 40 lbs. Check out the picture below.
WE ARE THINKING OF THE LEE, COPPERTONE AND TROPHY YELLOWFIN TUNA BRIAN AND SAM |

With the fishing time we have left on our trip, tomorrow is going to the best day for us to head out to the Lupe. This way, we have all day and the option to stay for the last day, if we choose to do so? The weather is much better today, so we're making a move. Tune in tomorrow for the hot dope! HOPIN' TO FIND CHARLIE AND FRIENDS BRIAN AND SAM |
Final recap of Bad Fish trip, as told by Capt. Sam Patella: The 1st and 2nd day was absolutely outstanding Albacore and BFT fishing and so by day 3, we were
trying to target just the bigger Bluefin. Late in the afternoon, we stumbled upon a
school of those trophy-size fish, but unfortunately, they wanted nothing to do with us.
So, for last day of fishing, we decided to go to Guadalupe. When we woke up in the morning,
fish were jumping around the boat and we landed 19 Yellowfin Tuna,(45-63lbs). What a
great way to end the trip!
JACKPOT WINNERS 1st place: HP Yamashiro 63.2lb YFT 2nd place: Ron Higgins 59.6lb YFT 3rd place: Mel Shimizu 56.1lb YFT After the smoke had cleared and all those fish were taken care of by Jorge and his great crew from Anthony's - everybody leaving on today's trip got settled in for the next 4 day trip, which left at noon - go get 'em, guys and gals! YELLOWFIN AT THE LUPE Awesome ending for this Bad Fish Trip!! They spent the morning at Guadalupe, fishing
the lee side and North end of island. It was like the tropics - gorgeous weather.
Fishing from spot to spot - little bits of tuna are starting to show up. Check out the
picture below for a sample of the 19 Yellowfin (all 45 - 55lbs), caught this morning!!
It's a beautiful thing to be at Guadalupe on a day like today.
BAD FISH IS HEADED IN - SLOWLY, BUT SURELY SAM AND BRIAN |
It is still good Albacore fishing, but the BFT's were in their down mode - only 4 were caught in the entire fleet today. Tomorrow morning we're going to fish Guadalupe - and see what we can sea! WE'RE GOIN TO THE LUPE - SAM AND BRIAN |
We had another nice day of fishing. When it was all said and done, the scoreboard had us for our daily limit of Albacore and 94 Bluefin Tuna. The weather is still beautiful and the troops are tired. Tomorrow we are in search mode again for some better size Bluefin. So we will sea what happens. Here is a photo of our smallest angler, Michelle Zenger, catching one of the biggest fish today. This one weighed in at 48lbs. - Michelle caught another one just a little bit bigger, later in the day.
GOOD NIGHT TO ALL, AND THINK JUMBO'S SAM AND BRIAN |
What a great day for this Bad Fish group! They finished with limits of
15-25lb Albacore and 124 Bluefin, 30-45lbs. They bit good early, with a
lull in the action from 10-3, but then the deck started getting busy again.
The weather was gorgeous and flat calm - with little, to no breeze - all day.
Check it out Allcoasters - what a perfect day to be fishing.

and they found only 8 hungry Bluefin (30-40lbs). The weather layed down
nicely today and the near future looks good out there!
THIS WAS AN ALBACORE/YELLOWTAIL TRIP! BRIAN AND SAM |
Today was fine Yellowtail fishing - to the limit!
Then, late in the afternoon, above the Islands, they snagged 17 Albacore (all
were the Fatso's - averaging 25lbs.).
The boat is going to run up the coast a little and fish it tomorrow.
Check back for last day of fishing on this great trip!
WE'RE HAVIN' FUN! BRIAN AND SAM |
THEY WILL RETURN SOON!
Today was another very, long day. Before the sun came up over the horizon, we saw
a lot of good Albacore marks, in the dark, and we were licking our chops - to say the least.
After daylight, the hunt was on. It seemed that as the morning progressed, we just
didn't catch much - for what we were seeing. Several fish marks, that seemed like a
sure thing, just did not bite. Ant that's pretty much how the whole day went. We
finished with 84 Albacore and a couple of Yellowtail - and
we did get a few nice-sized Alby's for our efforts. Check out the photo below of
a couple caught this morning.
GOOD NIGHT AND THINK OF THINGS WITH FORK TAILS! BRIAN AND SAM |
Wheelhouse report tonight - 85 Albacore (15-20lbers), 4 Bluefin (1 @65lbs,

looser lips tomorrow!

Yellowtail on the kelps, and to say that everyone is just enjoying each
others company on this last morning (and no doubt recounting fish stories from
yesterdays tremendous catch) - the boat is full of Bluefin!
WE'VE HAD A GREAT TIME WITH JAMES GANG HARDWARE CHARTER, THANKS EVERYONE! BRIAN AND SAM |

DREAMS DO COME TRUE BRIAN AND SAM |
PUTTIN THE WOOD TO 'EM What a great way to start a trip! Even a little bit of wind today didn't discourage those Albacore from biting. These fish really wanted it! After several hours of stringing a few good stops together, by 6:00 p.m. we were on our way to go look for those elusive Bluefin. The weather is still choppy, but very fishable. (Don't forget we are in the Eastern Pacific Ocean). So we will see if our luck continues into the rest of the trip. GOOD NIGHT, JAMES GANG SLEEP TIGHT! BRIAN AND SAM |
SAKAMOTO CHARTER'S TRIP IS OVER AND JAMES GANG HARDWARE CHARTER IS ON The boat hit the docks at 7:15 this morning with the Sakamoto group. They caught

The weather was gorgeous everyday - what a blast! The American Angler crew wants to
thank Mike Goldsmith and all the members of this charter, "Cops Chasin' Tuna".
You guys were a terrific group out there - THANKS!!

EXCELLENT ALBACORE FISHING AGAIN! Another day of all-out Albacore fishing aboard the American Angler today!
These fish were nice, with a few in the 30-35lb range. Once again, the
weather was beautiful and it was just all the way around a fun and fantastic trip.
Thank you "Cops Chasin Tuna - Mike Goldsmith and the guys!
"COPS CHASIN TUNA" HEADED FOR THE BARN! Sam and Brian |
GOOD ALBACORE FISHING TODAY! Today was an Albacore day aboard the American Angler - the Bluefin showed, but were not interested - hooked a couple on light line, but that's it. But it was great Albacore fishing and they had daily limits on those, 2 BFT's (one at 30lbs and the other was 65lbs), also in the mix were 30 Yellowtail and a couple of nice Dorado. The weather is absolutely gorgeous and they're having fun! ONE MORE DAY FOR "COPS CHASIN TUNA", LET'S DO IT UP, GUYS!! Sam and Brian |
THE BLUEFIN ARE BITING BIG TIME!! Report from the bridge tonight: 86 Bluefin - the majority of which were 30-50lbers with a handful from 65-70lbs, 90 Albacore which were the smaller fish scattered with the BFT's and they had daily limits on the Yellowtail (released many small ones). The boat didn't get into the area today until 1pm and got those Bluefin in one stop. Most of the fish today were Sardine fish with a few caught on the yo-yo. And if that isn't enough to make you want to pack your gear, Mother nature's generosity is holding steady - beautiful weather! The wheelhouse is a busy place tonight, surveying the grounds for tomorrow! "COPS CHASIN TUNA" IS OFF TO A GREAT START - CHECK BACK TOMORROW NIGHT!!! Sam and Brian |
|
Well, what can you say except that this was the kind of trip that dreams are made of! The Sports Chalet group ended their adventure with limits of Albacore - one of them topping the scales at 45lbs - they were nice grade fish. And of course, the highlight of the trip were those 98 Big Badboy Bluefin Tuna - up to 140 lbs. They also snagged a handful of Yellowtail, Dorado and 1 token Yellowfin Tuna! This was one group of happy fishermen - the crew really enjoyed these excellent people. So, thank you Sports Chalet from the American Angler!! Please stay tuned for more pictures - they'll all be up soon! Here is just a taste of what came home. |
Today was the finale for Brad Lemoine's Sports Chalet group - 14 Albacore ranging from 23 - 45lbs. Regular passenger Stan Chin was smiling about the 45lb Albacore he caught. Now that's a fat albert! They had beautiful weather once again and are headed for the barn. ETA for the American Angler is 6:15am tomorrow and turns around for a 4 day trip - "Cops Chasin Tuna" - another long-time American Angler charter that we are looking forward to meeting and fishing with!! OUTSTANDING FISHING FOR SPORTS CHALET - COULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED TO A NICER GROUP OF PEOPLE!! Sam and Brian |

Phenominal fishing today!! It was an Albacore Bonanza with some up to 35lbs. Then, late in the day, the boat got into a school of Bluefin and ended up with 68 BFT's (up to 100lb fish). Most of these were caught with Sardines, and some were snagged on the yo-yo. And if that doesn't make you wishin' you were fishin', the weather is unbelievable! Tonight they're making squid for those Bluefin tomorrow and last night they caught Bluefin between 1 and 5 a.m. before the Albacore Action started. The only problem on this trip is . . . when do you sleep!! OUTSTANDING FISHING!! Sam and Brian |
Well folks, first day out was a great day out for the Sports Chalet group. They ended the day with a nice Albacore catch, 33 Yellowtail, 1 50lb BFT and 1 45lb YFT - yes, a Yellowfin too. The fishing was good in the morning, but sort of fizzled out as the day progressed. The weather is beautiful and they're having a great time! Check back tomorrow. Great Albacore Fishing! Sam and Brian |
Anglers Choice is home and Sports Chalet is heading out today!
The boat departed at noon for a 5 day trip - Sports Chalet charter - and these Fishermen were ready to rock!! Brad couldn't make this trip, but called to make sure his people got out okay and they did! High hopes for BFT'S this trip!! Check back for a progress report tomorrow night. COME ON, LET'S GO!! Sam and Brian |
Today was the last day of the Anglers Choice 4 day trip. These fishermen
ended their day with a total of 14 Albies and 130 Yellowtail - they had
beautiful weather and a wonderful time!!
THANKS ANGLERS CHOICE!!! Brian and Sam |
The boat ended the day with 72 Albacore (most in the 15-25lb range, but a couple in the 30lb category), 20 Yellowtail and 4 Dorado. They are going to fish an area tomorrow where the Bluefin were jumping today. The weather came down today and was definitely nicer than yesterday! High hopes for tomorrow . . . WE STILL HAVE TOMORROW ANGLERS CHOICE!! Brian and Sam |
First day of fishing for Anglers Choice trip today harvested 127 Albies (12-25lbers), 7 Bluefin (the smaller variety), and 4 Yellowtail from the kelp paddies. They weather was choppy but is laying down tonight. They worked hard for those fish today with numerous stops - check back in the p.m. to see how tomorrow unfolds!! SLEEP TIGHT ANGLERS CHOICE AND DREAM OF BIG B.F.T. Brian and Sam |
The American Angler docked at 6:15 this am with their catch of
291 Bluefin, 106 Albacore, 104 Yellowtail and 4 Dorado. The group had
fantastic fishing and the only complaints that were
heard on the dock was that of sore muscles!!
We're Off After Those Wiley BFT!!! Brian and Sam |
Well, we are calling it a trip. Today was a little different then the last two days of fishing. After running up into all night we finally got on some fish around 10:00 a.m. The weather changed a little, just a bit more wind than we have had in the beginning of our trip. Not to forget that we are still in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, (yes we do get wind some times.) But by no means rough. We picked at the Albacore and picked up a few more Bluefin as well. For a total of 94 Albacore, 14 Bluefin Tuna and 8 Yellowtail. Any way you look at it still a wonderful trip. We are going to arrive back home at 06:15. We are going to be departing at Noon on another 4 day trip. Check in Friday night for more fish reports. LET'S DO IT! Brian and Sam |
Another fine day on the banks. We stopped about 5:00 a.m. on fish marks and right around daylight the games began. We were able to keep one to four fish going all day. This is a really good sign of things to come. It seems that this Bluefin is settling in now and is turning into good fishing for us. We are hoping that this will hold up for our future trips. When the sun set and we checked the tally board, the final score for the day was 146 Bluefin Tuna, 6 Albacore and 9 Yellowtail. Tomorrow we are going to run up the line a little bit to target some more Albacore. You know - a guy needs to put a little gravy on his MEAT. The weather has been great and we are having a phenomenal trip. LET'S DO IT! Brian and Sam |
It's Tuna Time - what a day we had! After finding just the right kelp paddy, the Yellowtail were biting first and then the Bluefin found us. It was a steady plunker fishing - we were able to keep a few rods bent all afternoon. The Bluefin range from 30 to 60 lbs. The weather is still awesome with 8 to 10 kts and no swell to speak of. Just another perfect day on our ocean. The final tally for the day was 134 Bluefin Tuna, 70 Yellowtail, 6 Albacore and 4 Dorado. We are going to stay here tonight and see what happens in the morning. It was good Bluefin fishing for most of the boats in this area today. IT'S SO ON RIGHT NOW!! Brian and Sam |
The boat arrived this morning at 7:30 with a great group of anglers whose catch
totalled 236 Albacore, 349 Yellowtail, 51 Bluefin Tuna, and 10 Dorado.
The crew of the American Angler wants to extend a special thanks to Gary Kimura and
his charter from Kimura Tackle!
Check out the pictures below - just some of the highlights of the Kimura trip.
CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!! Sam and Brian |
Today was the last day of Kimura Tackle's 4 day adventure. They had wide open Yellowtail fishing, on various kelp paddys, and the fish averaged 12-25lbs. What a great way to end the trip for an excellent group of people! The boat's ETA tomorrow is 7:30a.m. and then the Angler departs again at noon with an open party charter -![]() Check back tomorrow for Jackpot winners, pictures and what's the best bitin' tackle! Sam and Brian |
Tonight's report from the bridge: good Albacore fishing today and fair Yellowtail catching. They also had 34 Bluefin(the smaller variety) and 5 Dorado. The weather is still nice and the fishermen from Gary Kimura's group are tired but happy. Tomorrow's plan: Yellowtail and Bluefin.HOPING TOMORROW IS BENDO FOR GARY KIMURA'S CHARTER (KIMURA TACKLE)!! Sam and Brian |
Today we started looking for fish in a little different area. We found a nice
temperataure break and it had some signs of fish in it. First thing in the
morning we got on a couple of schools of Bluefin tuna that were not real eager
to bite. We landed 12 fish off the first spot and 5 fish off the second spot.
That really didn't do justice to what was there.
There was very little Albacore mixed in all of this, so we had to go into
search mode. We found a few kelps that produced some Yellowtail action for the
afternoon.

We are fishing around 200 miles from the point and had a nice day of fishing. We ended up with 157 Albacore, weighing 12-30 lbs., 41 Yellowtail 12-20 lbs., and 1 Bluefin around 25 lbs. The fish were acting a little skittish, but we were fortunate enough to put together a nice catch for the day. We are headed to the Benitos area tonight for a shot at the Yellowtail tomorrow. Wish Us Luck!!!Brian and Sam |

Another fine day on the banks!
Game on! Sam and Brian |
What another great day of Albacore fishing again today. We tried to be a little more selective on the size of the fish. The anglers released a lot of Albacore - trying just to keep the better grade fish. The fish that we have been catching in this area are anywhere from 14 lbs up to 30 lbs. By lunch time,we had all we needed. This area looks very promising for upcoming trips. As you can see by the pictures - looks like a lot fun. Also as for one of our new generation anglers Travis Zehntner with one his Albacore that he landed this morning, I think he's hooked. We will be fishing for Yellowtail tomorrow at Cedro's Island. Good luck, see ya later.
Sam and Brian |
The boat called in their fish report tonight at 9:30pm. They ran over 200 miles and didn't start fishing until late this afternoon, where they hit the jackpot. It was Albacore fishing at its finest!! The bulk of the fish were 14-18lbs, with some 20-25lbers mixed in. The weather was nice today and the fishermen are tired tonight! They are going to fish same area tomorrow for Albacore and the elusive Bluefin (spotted today). PHENOMENAL ALBACORE FISHING!! Sam and Brian |
The Angler picked up 80 Albacore today and their weather is still great! The boat will be in tonight at 7:45pm and depart tomorrow for a 5 day adventure at noon. Check back Tuesday night for the next report. Lots of Albacore and Plenty of Gorgeous Weather This Trip! Sam and Brian |
Captain Sam called in tonight to report a catch of 114 Albacore today - with one topping the scales @ 30lbs. These fish were biting a mix of anchovies and small sardines. The weather was absolutely gorgeous with no wind - what a great day to be out on the water!! Check back tomorrow; last day of this 2 day trip. Great Fishing and Flat Calm! Sam and Brian |
MIXING IT UP WITH MY HOME BOY'S Today was the first day of our Two Day trip. We thought that we would spend it with some old friends of ours. What I'm getting at is that the area that we fished was around the One Day Range boats about 65 miles from home. We had fair weather 12 to 14 knots of wind most of the day, with a touch more breeze just before sundown. And the day ended up just fine, we caught exactly 100 albacore for the day. It was steady action from sun up to sun down with only one small problem. NO MEAT! (where's the beef?). We had 29 jig stops today, with only a couple of stops that we caught any amount of bait fish. The highlight of the afternoon was a stop for 20 and a stop for 15 fish. Needless to say we had fun. We are going to fish till about lunch time tomorrow in order to meet our arrival time of 7:00 p.m. Hopefully this fish will start acting right again soon. NO SPECKLE HEADS? Sam and Brian |
|
The boat had absolutely phenomenal Albacore fishing today. The fish ranged from 18 - 34lbs (a random few were weighed). Captain Sam reports that they were really biting heavy line on the Sardines. They also picked up a bonus 17 Bluefin, which were all between 25-50lbs. And the icing on the cake was good weather today.

Fair day of fishing with 97 yellowtail at San Benito's island - still a nice grade of fish. The average weight ran about 18 to 22 lbs, with a few fish tipping in the low 30 lb class grade. The weather this morning was a little bumpy, but by midday it started to lay down and by sundown it was pretty nice weather. Our plans for tomorrow are to go looking offshore again to see what a guy could pick up. Log on tomorrow for more details. Oh - Capt. John Collins just reminded me about the 15 lb sheep head which I believe qualifies as major wool to cap off our day. Good Luck and Good Night Sam and Brian |

|
The boat had 35 Albacore today as they worked their way up the line.
It sounds like the weather started out a little choppy this morning but
improved as the day wore on. They scratched the 8-15lb fish through out
the day as they headed home.

Today was very good fishing at San Benitos island. We had very steady fishing all day. I can't say what was the best technique at the rail. We had fish on the yoyo, fly line sardine and surface iron, it was just a mix. The surface iron fishing went from exceptional to phenomenal. The fish averaged 15 to 30 lbs with some exceeding 35 lbs. We left the island at 4:00 p.m. We are in route to an area that we believe holds some albacore. This should give us several hours to put some fish on the boat before heading for home. Tune in tomorrow to see if we found them. Brian and Sam |
|||||||||||||||||||||
|
Day light found us at San Benitos island for steady
yellowtail fishing to the tune of 99 fish by 10:00 am.
This fishing was highlighted by exceptional surface IRON fishing.
Dillusion of grandeur and greed we pulled the anchor and left
for the south end of Cedros for afternoon yellowtail carnage.
After lunch found us touring a fishless area.
Between the south end of Cedros and Chester's rocks we squeezed
out 20 more fish for the day. Tomorrow we will be at Benitos
with high hopes of more yellowtail and a few trophys.

Slow scratch fishing for the long range Albacore fleet. There where various cherry patches found throughout the 150 to 200 mile range. The average boat counts were 50 to 80 fish and our 56 fish count was highlighted by a 45 lb. Albacore caught by Tony Castro. We are in route to San Benitos island with high expectations for good Yellowtail fishing, see ya all tomorrow.

The boat rolled in this morning at 6:30. Yesterday - the last day of a 5 day trip - they picked up a few more albacore. For the trip - the fishing was great, even though the conditions weren't. Now the weather has backed off, and the Angler is underway again for another 5 day trip and they can't wait to get back to it! Check back tomorrow for a report -Captain's Sam & Brian |

|
The boat had a wonderful day of fishing - they started out at the south end of Cedros and had a great morning. Our passengers ended up catching 150+ yellowtail. Then Captain Brian moved up to San Benitos Islands for the afternoon and caught 75 yellowtail. These slugs averaged 30lbs with some topping around 40lbs! The water is still kind of choppy, so it was a nice break from the weather fishing at the Islands today. We're fishing our way up the line!Captain's Sam & Brian |
|||||||||||||||||||||
|
The weather came up and was pretty choppy today - the boat had 36 albacore, but
it was tough fishing due to the conditions. Captain Brian is headed to Cedros for
yellowtail fishing tomorrow and hopefully some nicer waters.

|
Captain Brian just called in with the live report for today. We have 22 passengers on board for this trip. The weather hasn't been real good, with the wind up a little, but this didn't seem to bother the fish, nor the anglers. We caught 30 Albacore for our efforts in the morning, we then decided to move to a different area where we found some better grade Albacore. We had an excellent afternoon on the Albacore, the fish in this area are averaging between 18-25 pounds. Check back tomorrow ! Captain's Sam & Brian |

8 Day Final Recap: I was fortunate enough to be on this fantastic trip, the fishing at Alijos Rocks was as good as it gets for the Spring time. First of all I would like to thank Charter Master Brad Lemoine from Sports Chalet, he is a wonderful host and worked tirelessly at respooling everyone's reels with free Trilene Big Game, he also loaned some of his own equipment out to folks that were having problems with theirs. To Bill Randall for tieing every ones spectra to mono connections, and Grant Larson for rebuilding many of the reels that needed servicing from the punishment the Yellowfin were putting on them. Thanks Guys! Captains Sam & Brian and the crew John, Trevor, and Greg were awesome with the passengers they were always there to help with the tangles and what ever mess that can happen in a wide open Yellowfin bite. They kept everyone loose with plenty of good humor and their ability to make everyone enjoy themselves. Chefs Howard & Sara prepared wonderful meals each day, we had ever thing from sushi to prime rib. The food was just as good as the fishing, to the entire crew you are the best, thanks for a great trip. Monday 6/3: Departed at 12:15 PM stopped to pick up bait, we cleared the point by 2 PM for 2 days of travel to Alijos Rocks. Tuesday 6/4: Travel Day. Wednesday 6/5: Arrived at the Rocks at 11 AM, we looked around for a few hours and couple of anchor jobs when Captain Sam hit the jackpot. It was full speed on the 25-40 lb Yellowfin, and some Yellowtail until dark. We moved into the shallows after dinner for the night time Yellowtail bite. Our Charter Master Brad immediately put a 49 lb. Yellowtail on the deck to get things started. The Yellowtail fishing was good, anyone who spent time at the rail was reward with some nice 15-30 lb Yellowtail. Thursday 6/6: We moved back out into the deeper water, Captain Sam put us right back on the fish, and off we went again. The day went pretty much the same as the day before. The only difference being some of the Yellowfin were in the high 40's and 3 were 50-57.5 lbs that ended up being the jackpot fish. The Yellowtail were also in the mix most of the day. We made bait and went back into the shallows for more Yellowtail action, not to many people were fishing, we were all licking our wounds. Friday 6/7: We fished until 11 PM, we were cutting off (releasing) anything that was not 40 lbs, I don't know how many fish we cut off but it was quite a few. Captain's Sam & Brian decided to go look in an area that Bluefin had been spotted in the previous week. We arrived in this area around 3 PM, the water and conditions looked good but no one was home. We then headed to Chesters Rock. Saturday 6/8: We spent the morning looking for big Yellowtail at Chesters Rock, we caught 1 Yellowtail around 30 lbs for our efforts. We then moved to the south end of Cedros where Captain Brian spotted a bird school which resulted in a wide open Yellowtail bite on the on the yo yo iron. Salsa 6X jrs. in scrambled egg & blue & white were the hot ticket, this stop was great fun some of the passengers had never had the chance to fish this way. We also had a Calico Bass derby in the evening which was won by Richard Tanaka. We then traveled to San Martin for a shot at some Halibut & White Sea bass. Sunday 6/9: We were unsuccessful in this adventure. We headed back outside where we found Albacore at 215 miles from the point. The fishing was good in the morning, and everyone had some Albacore to take home. Monday 6/10: Our last day we were at San Jerimano where we fished for Red Rock Cod, and Ling Cod for a few hours before heading home. We caught some Reds and a few nice Ling Cod. What was Working: 40 lb test with 4/0-5/0 Eagle Claw 2005 hooks with a fly lined Sardine for the Yellowfin. Dropper Loop: 60-80 lb test with a 16 oz weight, and a Sardine for the Yellowtail, they also bit the strip bait. Yo Yo Iron: 40 lb test Salsa 6x jr, scrambled egg, dorado, and blue & white. Albacore: 25 lb test # 1 hook, and 1/2 oz rubber core sinker. This was one of those special trips that you dream about, incredible fishing, and great group of passengers. Thanks everyone for a great trip! Here is our Jackpot Winners:

ITS BEEN GOOD! After two awesome days of fishing we chose to take off from here this morning.
We caught 25 yellows last night,
with one of our fish weighing at 42 lbs caught by Dennis Smith.(sorry no picture)
The cameraman was sleeping. We fished till 0900.After getting a
few yellowtail and saving a few better size tuna we
took off. Not to mention this dandy dorado caught by Grant Larson
shown here with one of our star crew members Greg Tangi.
The last 46 hours have been some of the best fishing a guy could
ever ask for. With fantastic yellowfin tuna fishing during the day
and fair yellowtail fishing at night, this is been as good as it
gets spring time fishing at the rocks. We are running up to
Chester's Rock,We have a couple days left to fish so we are
going to target some quality yellowtail to top off the wells.

The First Day at The Rocks We arrived here about 11:00 AM and the morning started out slow. It seemed to be some time around one o'clock when things started to happen. We stopped on a sonar school just outside the rocks a couple of miles. It was game on! As the afternoon progressed there were more spots to try, so we made a few more stops and ended the day with 176 yellowfin tuna, 25 to 40lbs. THEY'RE HITTIN!Sam & Brian |

Captain's Brian and Sam just called in a report for the past two days of
fishing. Yesterday they had nice weather, and picked up 10 Albacore
while traveling. Today they had as good as it gets Yellowtail fishing
at the south end of Cedros - where 16 anglers had limits of 12-20lber's
and great weather. They capped off the day at San Benitos Island with
all 25-30lb Yellowtail. The biggest fish of the day was 33lbs.

Sam and Brian called in at 9:30pm tonight to report 69 albacore today
- most of them 8-10 lbers. There were several caught on jig strikes
and a few were bait fish. The guys also reported several spots of

They also said the weather was absolutely gorgeous again today!

Saturday, May 25
Different day this morning, we caught 21 yellows around the islands.Water conditions were still a little chilly - 57.5 to 58.5. We saw fish but they were acting different today. We chose to leave San Benitos Islands at noon. There were fair scores of Albacore today 70 to 90 miles from home. So, due to circumstances, we're going spend the last day of our trip up in that area. Still nice weather.

Good evening everyone here are a few photo's and a final recap of our day & a half trip. We had 23 passengers aboard, most of them read the Allcoast Sportfishing board. We departed the landing at7 PM with a good mix of nice anchovies & Sardines and headed South. We were fortunate, the weather was great, and we all got a good nights rest. We started trolling at 5:45 in the grey light. The 1st trolling rotation did not catch a fish, our 2nd rotation yielded 1 Bonito caught by one of your webmasters Connie Kling. We were almost thru the 3rd rotation at 8:45 when they got 2 Albacore on jigs, and 5 bait fish. The Albacore are running 10-15 lbs, and everyone is excited. The rest of the day went pretty much the same until 7 PM when the bite shut off. We had a few stops for 10-20 fish, everyone worked well together. Our final count was 101 Albacore, 11 Bonito, and a few Spanish Jacks (good sushi). The tackle setup that worked the best was 20-25 lb. line, #1-2 hook with a 3/8 ounce rubbercore sinker, and a Anchovie for bait. There were also some fish caught on the slide with small green plastic baits on a leadhead. The trolling jigs were pretty much the standard colors, purple & black, zucinni, mexican flag, purple green & black, and also a white one that was on one of the boat rods. Congratulation to Scot Curry who placed 1st in the jackpot with a 27 lb. Albacore, 2nd place fish was 24 lbs. There was one fish larger that was caught on the troll but did not count in the jackpot. Robert Withsosky was the lucky drawing winner of a Albackore tackle box donated by Jeff Jost. It was nice mix of people of different skill levels with the veterans helping the less experienced. Sam, Brian & the crew were awesome as usual, the food was fantastic prepared by Howard & Sara, thanks for the great trip everyone.
We start our long range trips Wed. May 22, there are openings on many of our trips thru June. It will a great chance to get a shot at the early Bluefin. |

IT'S ON! What a day today. We finished up with 101 Albacore. The weather was just fantastic. I Would call it Flat Calm. We found this area 130 miles from home. The fish weighed an average of 10 to 14lbs and couple were right at 22 to 25lbs. What's Next? There were fish caught up in one day range as well today. Looks like we could have some fun this summer. We will be departing wednesday May 22 on a 5 day trip, should be fun. Look for more reports next week on our web site till then, Let's Get Some. Sam and Brian |

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE AREA! Good morning, We just returned from another day and half trip this morning. Due to weather conditions that were forecasted for yesterday's fishing, we stayed on the inside at the Coronado Islands. Fishing was fair, we picked up 26 yellowtail for 22 anglers and saw a lot of fish on several different spots. The grade of the fish were 10 to 20lbs. This is a very good sign for the spring fishing season to get started. There were also 3 boats that fished offshore yesterday. They caught some albacore in a few different areas, once again. What we need now is for Mother nature to give us a break! This wind needs to back off and let us get out there and get it on. I'm really pumped on what signs are around right now. We have not seen this nice grade of yellowtail on the beach since 1998. And it's great to see these 10 to 15lb albacore spread out from 80 to 200 miles from home. The next trip will be our 1st Allcoast trip departing at 6 PM Friday May 17. There are still a few spots available, if you would like to go give Judy a call at the AA office (619) 2235414. Let's hope the weather backs off this week! In a nutshell, the table is set for another banner year. We will be posting a report next Saturday evening. LETS DO IT!Sam and Brian |

Welcome to our first live satellite fishing report.
Attention all anglers tis the season to get ready for offshore fishing We just returned
back from our first day and a half trip this morning.we covered a lot of good looking water yesterday.
Fishing, catching on the other hand, was very slow. The Pacific Queen and ourselves were out looking
from 100 to130 miles from Point Loma. The Queen had 6 albacore and 1 yellowtail. We caught only 2
albacore and 3 bonito. That all doesn't sound like much but those fish where caught in three different
spots all about 10 miles apart. Also the Royal Star was south of our position around 100 miles and also
had some albcore. So what I'm getting at is that this all good for things ahead.

Good afternoon everyone welcome to our 1st fishing report update. Our satellite system still has a few technical problems and we were unable to update from out on the water. We spent most of the day Wednesday installing a brand new high tech computer system on the boat that was built specifically for our needs. We would like to thank Robert, Evan, and Bill Grimsley from Computer Network Professionals for building and installing a 1st class computer system on the boat. Their service and tech support is as good as it gets and greatly appreciated.
We left the dock at Noon Thursday April 18 with 28 passengers on a Mexican coast freelance trip. We stopped at the bait receivers and picked up a great load of nice Sardines. We then headed out past the Coronodo Islands looking & trolling on our way south, the water was still a little cold and off color around the Coronodo's. From there we headed 200 miles south to the Isla San Jeronimo area for some Rock & Ling Cod fishing. We had scratch fishing there, everyone caught some nice fish for the freezer. We headed to the San Carlos area aroud 2 PM to look around to see if the Yellowtail wanted to play, unfortunately no one was home. We traveled Friday night up to San Martin for some Yellowtail & Cod fishing on Saturday. The water conditions were a lot nicer there, we caught 16 nice Yellowtail here. The Ling Cod fishing was great on the dropper loop, almost every fish was legal size. Here are some photo's from the trip, congratulations to our jackpot winners 1st place Craig Arnold 18.8 lb. Yellowtail, 2nd place Jim Seuferer 18.2 lb. Yellowtail, and 3rd went to Jim Kastorff with a 17.7 lb. Yellowtail. Trip # 1 is a 1 1/2 day trip departing Wed. May 1st at 6PM, returning Fri. May 3rd in the AM. This trip is a definitely going, we need to get out and and locate the fish. This might be a great opportunity to fish with a very limited load, give Judy a call at the office (619) 223-5414. |
